Dream Builds: Nicole Formosa's Ibis Ripley

Peer into the workshop of Bike senior editor and former World Cup race mechanic, Ryan Palmer, as this year’s Bike Magazine Editors’ Choice Dream Builds come together. Take an artfully captured and detailed journey as collections of each editor’s favorite components take shape into their vision of the perfect bike. In this video, Palmer puts together editor-in-chief Nicole Formosa’s Ibis Ripley, a sleek bike built for fast, efficient laps, the only kind a new mom like Nicole is bound to sneak in during the first demanding months of parenthood.
With design inspiration taken from the Chromag Juniper Goldhide saddle, this blinged-out Ripley is powered by the industry-leading Shimano 12-speed XTR drivetrain and rides on Kashima-coated Fox suspension. The Ripley’s golden accents continue through to the tan sidewall Schwalbe Hans Dampf tires, up to the Chromag Gold top cap and out to the DMR Gum grips. Despite an increasingly battery-powered world, the only bit requiring a charge on this build is the SRAM Reverb AXS dropper, whose instantaneous engagement is well worth the risk of Nicole’s scattered mind forgetting to keep it juiced. This Ripley absolutely rips, making even the quickest jaunts harken of responsibility-free rides with no time limit. Now if it could only change diapers.

I want Ryan Palmer to build my wheels. That alone is worth the price of admission. What an artist.
It takes a lot of patience for somebody to trim and organise a hub and spoke wheel respect to the riders mechanics who are sorting this out
This is ASMR for cyclists...Imagine working in a shop where you had all the tools you needed...

I felt so relaxed watching this, i felt i was meditating. If i was building that bike though, id be so paranoid of breaking something, id be cussin’ up a storm and drinking WAY more than just one beer. A job well done, on the build and the edit.

Only one change I’d make; mount the reverb “controller” to the brake lever with the angle bracket off a Sram matchmaker. The lever has a groove in the clamp, so it works and looks a damn sight neater. Really enjoyed this video.

And he didn't even use spoke prep on the threads that I saw. Using that means 15 minutes MORE work the day before and then 24 hours to dry. But a tension meter is a must and it really slows down the wheel building process. But the fantastic end result is well worth the extra time. Those are indeed beautiful wheels. But I'd rather see King hubs. But I realize it's a factory bike build, so it needs the sponsors full parts kit. (Has a King HS though.)

Wheel builds complete with nipple grease & washers, and THEN thread oil, tension meter and tubeless are easily 3 hours of work. Rest of bike's about the same, if not perhaps less.
