    @@JeffKendallWeed Jeff, I read your comment and promptly went out for another ride on the 'hawk. The geo feel is similar to my SB150, so I had no trouble adapting to the bike. It is deceptively fast, and feels faster than my Yeti going downhill. Will need.to confirm with some laps at the bike park. Climbing and technical moves are the big surprise. Short stays help with both aspects...and here in New England, we have a lot of tight, technical, rooty and rocky bits to navigate. Again, coming from a Rootdown I mostly knew what to expect, so maybe the biggest surprise is how relatively nimble and stable the bike is in slow speed stuff with a 180mm fork and 62 degree head angle. It's nuts!

    Great work on the build video, great angles, well shot.👌 I don't think you will need to use the levers, only thing I use tyre lever for is to push bead into centre of rim and to take tyre off, there should be no reason not do what you do at 6:57 But I haven't tried this tyre, rim combo. the key to installing tyres fast & easily is to get enough slack. 6:03 be careful, they will snap if you abuse them, but these are a bad product anyway, tried and abused these just to test it, and yest I managed to snap two, by doing what you did but I took it to the extreme. So I have tested the Crank Brothers Speedier lever with same abuse and did not snap. Still using it.

    @@bananasstuff3344 I hope this clarifies my previous comment, I admit it was not clear enough, I am sorry: I mean to seat the tyre, like with a motorcycle or car tyre, using big lever cus it's impossible to put on, what I do is I get enough slack and use tyre lever to push tyre into the rim channel, now I use Cush Core lever, specifically made for it. and use lever to take the tyre off easily. no need to use whole body, and use long levers, or metal levers, that just scratches the rim. There is no need to be brutal, or abuse your self and the rim. The key is to get enough slack.

    Nice build Jeff, fully understand why you came to your senses and put some gears on that thing :-D Curious if happen to have another 650B wheelset without Cush Core and can give an opinion on the difference on a steel HT like this? Does it help with undamped rebound that much at the lower pressures that the extra weight is worth it? Have to agree about the fork, on an FS not too bad since there's linkages in the back, but on the HT, looks weird. Hoping that maybe you're game to picking up a nice 500mm A2C rigid fork and building a nice 29er wheel, i40 and throwing a 3" tyre on there to see how it rides (should keep the geo fairly similar with that setup). Have to say, bit disappointed with that jank as hell rear brake setup, isn't this the adapter you need? Might have to take a file to it and take a mm off, but that's easy enough to do and would be much more solid a setup. www.jensonusa.com/Shimano-R203PS-Disc-Brake-Adaptor

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    Hey Kirk, just saw this- I didn't really have the Stylus "underforked", as despite the shorter travel, the Trust is a 29" fork with a longish axle to crown. The 170mm Z1 that's on it now and in the more recent Bike Check vid from a few weeks ago didn't really reel any slacker. I really like the Stylus, it's a very capable bike that's reliable and well built. I'm about to throw yet another different set up on it and change it up, will def. post some videos of that!

    @@JeffKendallWeed I have that bike. My take on steep ST angle same as yours... maybe a bigger frame. Obviously the 200mm dropper post takes care of your problem ;).. to me a steep ST angle makes more sense for full suspension's sag. Ability to slide up to nose on a hardtail plus ability to sit back and use gluteus-maximus uphill makes an argument for a slacker angle. Still, not selling mine.

    What gearing are you running for your SS setup ?

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    Hey TONC, I forget the exact ratio, though seem to think it was a 32/19? I used to LOVE 2:1 on my 26" bikes. That was with 170mm cranks. I raced the Downieville Classic XC and finished 2nd in the SS category on that set up- but that was 10 years ago! Our hills here are a little steep for consistent single speed riding. Santa Cruz was a much place to ride SS.

  • @JeffKendallWeed

    @JeffKendallWeed

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@jedidiahwest4619 Yeah the tensioner solution actually works pretty darn well. It's what my trials bike uses (Inspired Hex 26") and I never had a problem there. I'd prefer some some of adjustable drop out solution, and I'd love to try a bike that has those Paragon adjustable drop outs. Rick Hunter (Hunter Cycles) has some cool drop outs as well. Horizontal, sliding dropouts are OK, but a total hassle. If you land sideways they can move, and aligning brakes every time you remove a wheel gets old quick. The tensioner is an easy, cheap, and tested method. It has a lot more tension than a standard derailleur, too.
