Thank you for making this vid. I’m a white guy, and I’ve always wanted to lock my hair. I just like the style of locks, and I would enjoy growing them long. I’ve always held back because I don’t want to be slandered for cultural appropriation. And I am sorry to the black people out there who are discriminated against for their locks or hair texture. Your hair is beautiful, and I’ve always wanted hair like that. Straight hair is just boring to me.

As a black person I dont care how a person wear their hair because we black people practice culture inappropriation all the time. we wear wigs, we perm our hair, we bleach our skin. Wear your hair however you choose. I dont watch colour I watch peoples attitude.

the earliest records of dreadlocks are found in hindu scriptures- most Hindu sadhus and sadhvines who have left all materialistic desires, have dreadlocks. It symbolises them giving up vanity. In sanskrit, they are called jatas. Its a huge part of hindu culture. Most shaivists have them. Ps: lot of white hindus get hate for wearing dreadlocks cause of cultural appropriation, but jatas are part of hindu culture, its not just indian Hindus who can have them, anyone who has initiated into hinduism can have jatas if they like.

Samson and Delilah Samson had the most beautiful hair locks black people natural hair was born and made for braids and locks they became dreadful when other cultures attempt to wear them with matted unclean hair. Hair texture is everything it's natural for blacks to wear braids and locks their curl patterns is designed for it.

I agree with you. It seems like the people crying cultural appropriation dont themselves understand that dreads are so diverse not just culture to culture but also individual to individual. Any hair even the straightest will dreadlock up without brushing. It seems like its probably one of the most ancient hairstyles that we had if its that simple.

Thank you for this message. Your locs are beautiful. I have new locs which look crazy but I love them and I decided to loc up my hair because I needed to let go of thinking I had to bleach my naturally brown hair to be pretty or cover my gray as a 40 yr old woman. I just wanted to accept myself and find love for myself. I love my locs and I am very excited to finally find love for myself and see myself as beautiful in my own skin and with my own hair.

My son and I are both white, my son is a blondie and we both have hair with natural curls that kinks and gets matted very easily, my son's is really bad, his naturally looks like he's in the process of dreading. Thank you for your thoughts! I love hiking too! :) It's strange to me that people spout off nonsense about where they think braids and dreads came from, but they don't look into history to see that they have been found on cultures from Nordic countries to Aztecs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreadlocks Much love from Utah!

I enjoyed your video and I can relate to each point you made. I started my locs for me, I switched jobs over a year ago to a less than business setting and felt freedom and relief to finally start locs. I was in a manager role and even though the company was “all about diversity” , it still was the keep the kinky hair “straight” setting...lol...but I digress. I agree with you and my philosophy is to be positive and don’t care about what other people are doing, as you mentioned we have real issues to worry about. Thank you and I will share this with my daughter as she just started her locs and gettin some very negative views from co-workers and customers....

DBTrell Thank for watching, Dear Sister. I went through so much when I first started locs. Well, when I first went natural in 2002. It wasn’t popular then. I was made fun of. When the locs came the ridicule was ridiculous. Your daughter just needs to keep her eyes on the prize. Stay strong and remember why she started. And remember, everyone hates and even steps on the caterpillar, but marvels at the beauty of the butterfly. I hope she embraces her caterpillar phase.

You're absolutely right... Dreadlocks have been around for thousands and thousands of years. In fact, the 1st recorded dreadlock wearing cultures were ancient India, ancient Greece, ancient Asian cultures and the Vikings. Bottom line, dreadlocks don't belong to any one culture, or people. So people that think dreadlocks belong to their culture alone, can simply get over it.

I’m a first time watcher. I found you while doing a deep dive on white people with dreadlocs. I’m white, female, 37, and have had dreads since I was 18. I understand the negative reactions you get when you first start them. For me, it mostly came from people I was close to and were supposed to love me unconditionally. I also understand the “ugly phase” all too well. The whole dreadloc conversation has changed and evolved a lot in the decades that I’ve had them. I love my dreads, and at this point in my journey, I really do feel like they are a part of me. Like more than just something that’s physically growing out of my head. I loved your video (and your bird 🥰) and the genuine way you present yourself and the information. I also like how you talk about “bridging the gaps”. To me, that seems like how we should be progressing as a society. The way you described that was beautifully put. If everyone thought like that, we would be living in a much more loving and accepting world. Out in the real world I’ve only had positive conversations about my hair. Everyone who has decided to strike up a conversation (mostly black people) about my hair is usually a hair stylist, hair enthusiast, or just a genuinely curious person. I’ve never actually had a negative encounter in the real world about my hair. Not even dirty looks (that I could see anyways). The internet and social media, on the other hand, I’ve received so much vitriol. I’m not even an influencer or anything of the sort. I just sometimes have my face as my profile pic on my social media profiles. And if I comment on something, instead of having a normal conversation, it always goes back to my hair and how I’m not worthy of even being in the conversation. Like “you’re a white girl with dreads, who cares what you think…yada yada yada” People can say really mean things sometimes. It’s not even people who want to have the cultural appropriation conversation. It’s usually white guys that I’ve never met or spoken to before that are telling me how disgusting I am or make fun of my hygiene. I recently got really cyber bullied after I left a puke emoji under a post that had a meme about nasty hotdogs. It had nothing to do with me, my hair, dreadlocs, cultural appropriation, or anything of the sort. It was about f-ing hot dogs lol! I’m actually thinking about going back to a pic of my dog as my profile pic. I have a lot of business ideas, and comments like that make me not want to put myself out there in life and/or social media. It doesn’t make sense to me that it’s one way in the real world and opposite on the internet. It’s confusing. Hence why I am doing a deep dive on if I’m a bad person for existing with my hair in dreadlocs. Thank you for your video and take on things. It seems from my deep dives that more people are aware of the history of dreadlocs than not. It also seems like most people are about unity and bridging gaps in a respectful way. Not everyone, but most. Anyways, I hope you really enjoy your next hike with your feather baby! That was the cutest thing ever when he kissed you back! 🥹

I can't understand what is wrong with people, your hair is really beautiful, why are people so dumb and agressive? I'm sorry about your history that's just not right to hate people by their heritage, Love and appreciation should be the most important things in this world, we have to support each other and live on this planet together, not separated. People my age are the most judgemental generally speaking, and the younger generations are the most supportive and kind generally speaking. Thank you for the positive message! I didn’t see the bird for a few minute bc he blended in with your shirt a bit! So cute 💕💕💕 I’m waiting for custom wool dreadlocks right now and concerned about getting hate for it. My reasons are 1) my hair literally won’t grow and it’s the only way I can figure out to have long hair on a daily basis. Do I absolutely need long hair? No, but I’ve always wished I had it! 2) I watched all the seasons of “ the Vikings” and my my moms side is Swedish so in my mind I have a weird fantasy warrior lady look going on, I’ve ordered beads with runes on them etc. im pretty sure it’s going to look bad-ass, but I may be delusional lol. I’m really truly not in my mind trying to “copy” black culture. Of course I have seen braids and dreads on black people, so someone can argue that I have a subconscious motivation who knows. 3) There are always going to be a very small minority of people who are going to not like other people based on race regardless, and the anonymity of the internet tends to bring out the worst. I’m not sure if some of the people who were posting very mean comments would have other things to criticize other than hair and you can’t really get bothered by it. I believe that 99% of people are really nice and the other 1% is busy trolling the internet.

IMO, locs are universal. I agree with you. What did they think earlier man hair looked like before the comb and brush were invented? Culture appropriation is when someone claims they came up with a food, style, etc that was already known. Like they tried to say the Kardashians came up with the cornrows or that stylist invented the China bumps aka bantu knots. Most people don't understand the true meaning culture appropriation.

You are so sweet and made all the points I try to explain to people myself on the topic. What point is being made by being hateful towards anyone about this? If the goal is to have more acceptance how does it make sense to vilify people for it? It makes no sense. In my personal experience I've had more white people complain about my hair (mostly family) and black people compliment me on it. But I've only seen all this crazy hate for it online in the last few years. Thank you for making this video. My culture and family heritage like others all around the world Had dreadlocks and more purpose than just for looks, the Norse would also put forms of paint in there hair to help propel bugs and the Norse were also some of the first people that used dental modifications(Grill) by chiseling lines across the middle of the teeth and painting the grooves that were filed away. I'm pretty sure in almost all cultures Dreads were worn all the way back to the age of the Romans. with all that said I'm glad to see more and more people with this opinion. loved the Video Skal!

I was accused today of cultural appropriation and labelled as 'white supremacy' after I shared an fb post promoting a recent maintenance video I created. It was an interesting experience for me, one in which I will learn from. I have white skin, yes, but my blood is of colour... My mother Maori (aboriginal peoples of NZ,who too, are the oppressed culture of my country to this day) (not that I need to justify this) so naturally I was curious and shaken about being labelled as white supremacy. It's not a common topic in my little country, we more experience rascism. So being told I was appropriating, and a white supremast... I thought I'd do my research, and I have found this video among others, and am grateful to hear your stance. 🙏 For me wearing dreads, is like explaining it as "coming home to who I am" and also a practical way of managing my hair. (I have unruly, dry, frizzy, curly hair naturally) I have received negative reactions from having Dreads , in my home town, from people who just don't understand, not because of my colour of skin but because of the fact I have dreads and they don't know much about them, some are open to understanding why I have them, others not so much. I'm always open to chatting about my 'why'.. But I have also received negative responses to my piercing, tattoo and even not looking respectable enough.. 🤷‍♀️ But never have I been told I'm 'white supremacy' ... At which point do we accept that all 'truths' are truths and 'ownership' over something is a concept, that origins of culture can be complex and multi faceted, and not one sided, we are a diverse world! ? When can we find our discernment within the context and take ownership over personal sovereignty? I respect the MANY cultures who wore their hair in Locs, dreads and braids, for personal, religious, spiritual or practical reasons. I also respect my right of choice as to how I show up in this world and who I serve. I create dreads using tools, not freeform which is clearly another reason I was targeted. I really appreciate you touching on this subject here sista and even more affirming for me, in my native tongue... Kiaora and Kia kaha 🙏 (I acknowledge you, thank you and stand strong)

Hi, I watched your video because I am interested in all things hair and I enjoy watching some black natural hair videos from time to time even though I'm not black...I'm Italian btw. I like the look of afro natural hair and I've learned some things from them for my own hair too. As for locs: I think those I have seen growing from straighter-haired heads just don't look as good. They don't look defined and substantial just ratty and spiffy, at least that's my opinion, so I wouldn't consider them for my own hair (wavy in the 2 range, I also don't like permanent hairstyles but that's another issue). There are some non-black people who probably could have some nice locs like Caparezza, but that's because their hair is already Afro-like. Some of my relatives would qualify. Though, I am curious to know what Indian sadhus do to achieve their locs (jata) because they look very nice (though in their case I think their locs have an exclusively religious meaning). Also, cute parrot!!

I don't wanna talk myself out with "yea but one black person says it's fine" but at the same time there are so many black people who say that it's totally okay but there are still people out there wo say it's cultural appropriation and I don't know who I should listen to cause I really don't wanna upset people with my hair, but no one explains how exactly it is harmful to the community for white people to wear dreads, I do understand that I will not be hated by white people because of my hair and I know that's a privilege but does that really mean I am not allowed a hairstyle? The fact is we black Americans are the ones who should be accused of cultural appropriation. They don't wear locks in Africa like we wear locs. Like you said in Africa locks are only worn among certain tribes and even within those tribes you have to be at a certain level like you said warrior, etc. We are the ones walking around with manicured locks many of them fake with those dumbass goddess locks instant locks, etc. I don't even want to hear from anybody who has a set of locks on their head that are not 100% their hair. And let's be honest the majority of black Americans that are even wearing locks now or wearing them for style and nothing else. Even Rastafarians think we're full of s*** with our manicured got to have a retwist every two weeks dreads. I have a Yorkie poo and if I don't comb her hair just like you said it will mat up and have to be cut off. Anybody wearing a wig extensions or anything else on their hair needs to keep their mouth shut!!! Period.. congrats from one hiker to another. Yes there are not a lot of us black hikers out there but that's really changing and though this post is older this year we had a black woman's hiking group trek to the top of one of the highest peaks. Even REI has come out within afro outdoor collection. And girl what's wrong with you, you know black folks don't own parrots. 😜 Thanks for attempting to set a straight!!

I understand people being worried about cultural appropriation, but far more cultures have had dreadlocks than the just black cultures. Dreadlocks were part of European culture too, for instance, where it used to be a sign of romance to keep a lock of someone's hair. And I'm sure plenty of other cultures have traditions of locks - I bet Mongolia does too!

All life come from the mitochondrial eve let’s just start there. Secondly, people in Alaska have been wearing dreadlocks since the beginning of time because they go hunting in the dark for weeks on end as do people who live in the mountains because they cannot access water all the time, just like people who live on the islands it’s too hot and you’re on the beach all the time you’re on an island all the time they were dreadlocks also nobody complains when black women wear blonde hair or have contacts in their eyes to change the eye color to blue to green or to hazel you never see white women putting up videos on stuff like this. As women we all want to look beautiful we are all into hair and basically who cares? Do you sis

Dreadlocks don’t just appear in black cultures they have been used by men in the archaic period of Greece they were used by the Vikings, the Egyptians, they were worn by Christian ascetics in the Middle East and Mediterranean, the dervishes of Islam, the hindus had them. In ancient Peru they were used. In fact black people weren’t the first to wear them the Egyptians were. So while many people can put up arguments saying it’s part of many black peoples culture, that may be true but it’s part of other groups culture as well.

Irishtradchannel Thanks for the comment. I appreciate you commenting, Love!!!! IYou are right about the Indian Holy Men. If they wore it first, how can it be cultural appropriation of Rastafarian culture if Hindu Vedic scriptures show that matted hair or dreadlocks were worn by their God Shiva dating back to 1700 BC? Not to mention the Vikings, Celtics, and Greeks. The Rastafarian wasn’t created until 1930s (I think). Dreadlocks were wore well before Rasta. Locking is a natural occurrence if no one ever combed their hair. I don’t think it belongs to any specific culture. Thanks again, Love. 💛💛💛💛
