Dreadlocks, Ganja & Gods | The Hindu link between Bob Marley and Rastafari

Hindus in Jamaica? Many of us-- myself included-- didn't even realize they were Hindus in Jamaica when I was growing up and I am a West-Indian Hindu. In this video I will show you the SURPRISING connection between Bob Marley, Rastafari, and Hinduism.
Hindus played a surprising role in shaping Rastafari beliefs and it's something that you usually don't hear about. The Hindus that were brought to Jamaica did help to shape the culture of that country and we should all recognize their contribution to to the culture of Jamaica.

My Indian half of my identity has been ignored and a lot of the culture and history has been erased. Thank you for taking the time to find these connections! If Rastafari is Hinduism, why did people pay with their lives when they grew locks & followed the way of life? It is clearly something that was here in the beginning, that the 1% did not want to see back on this Earth. Hinduism is already here, & I have not seen a female cow being worshipped at no point in Rastafari?? Hinduism is a religion & Rastafari is NOT!!!

There's a reason for that! Hindus ot east Indian hasn't really join the liberation front, in most cases they undermine any such movement, most Caribbean Indians are racist and trust me i have a lot of indian friends. They still blame Obama but they wouldn't dare blame any white men🤔...very oddly behavior dont u think?!?

As a second generation Rasta and a pan African historian, i would say, facts and very well research. The conclusion of the relationship between Rasta and Hindism goes far deeper in history. As Rasta influenced Hinduism from creation. The oneness is the fact that once you take out religion (even Hinduism you will find that we are all the same, indigious Jamaican (Caribbean), ancient Asiatic cultures and African alike as well as the original Americans

How is that possible when Hindusim belief predated Rastafarian belief over 7000 years?? Rasta sect came into existence in mid 1800s and was influenced by over a million Asian Coolies slaves (from South Asia , Se-Asia and East Asia) that was suppsoed to replace African slavery since the beginning of 1800s. Meaning these Elites eas already planning to free African since early 1800s. First Asian coolies step foot in America by 1801. Abolished slavery didnt take effect until 1865...

It's just a week ago, someone did a video about the influence of the Jamaican Patois and the cultures that shaped it. Nobody mentioned the Indian culture, and i was the only one in the comments that pointed out that fact. I have, years ago gotten this information about the Hindu influence on Rastafari, and i have been trying to tell people that Indians play a great part in shaping the Jamaican culture. People even gave the Chinese their credit and seems to forget about the indians, when I'm sure that almost all of us go to school with at least one Indian person in class, but most of us never really mingle with a Chinese person.

The twin thrones of Ras Tafari & his wife Empress Menen are based on balance. "I praise the Goddess & the God" is no 38: on the 42 Ideals of Ma'at, which is ancient, yet still in line with Rastafari. All 42 ideals relate to the Emperor & his Empress, as well as Psalms 82.. "As it was in the beginning, so shall it be in the end, world without end"!!!

I cannot speak for Hindus in other countries but in Trinidad unlike our African Ancestors, the Indian indentured Labourers were not forced to leave their identity behind. They got to keep their language, religion and their names. Hence could be a reason why their religion persists. With regards to the Rastafarian religion my dad was a Rastafari in the 70s and he told me about its connection to Hinduism. I am proud of of West African and my South Asian Heritage ❤ Like the Jamaican motto says out of many one people

Oh absolutely, I would agree. We have to remember that most of our history is written by winners and remember that the saying 'All's fair in love and war' hits the spot correctly. Thankfully there are a few surviving records of many Sanatanis who preferred to be slaughtered or buried alive than have their janev (sacred thread worn by many ascetics and strict followers of Sanatan Dharma) snatched or convert. Howell was contracted to cultivate ganja by the indentured Indians. His refusal to recognize King George as Imperial Majesty after the coronation of Selassie had consequences. He was imprisoned and his followers were driven into exile. The survivors emerged as Rastafarians, and Rita Marley was pivotal in Bob's conversion to the ideology. There is a enough researchable information to fill in the blanks. I agree there is some influence from Indians and if you look deep enough there is commonality between all belief systems. I appreciate the posit. Cheers.

Nice, 👍🏾 but I would like to add that Rasta or dreadlocks also exist in many cultures in Africa including my country Angola and we don’t have Indians 🇮🇳 there. It’s the tradition of some tribes in Africa. As you may now many cultural traits are transversal to different areas of the globe. There’s traditions that exist in Africa and also exist in South America from people that were never connected. I advise everyone to research the history of dreadlocks. I’m not denying a possible Indian connection and contribution but I know by studying that all places that Indians and Africans resided together they don’t get along because of Indian conservatism. I heard of an Indian family who killed a black woman because she married her son in the USA. I heard of an Indian family who threatened a black man for being in a relationship with their daughter in UK 🇬🇧. I heard a problem of integration, not accepting be part of the society and see themselves as British citizens and higher than the native people in Uganda 🇺🇬 and South Africa 🇿🇦, I heard of Indians don’t give black citizens opportunities and oppressing them in Guiana 🇬🇾. Basically when Indians have power when they dominate they mistreat and oppress black people and don’t let black people mix with them or integrate, they believe they are above black African people but under white European people.

Dreadlocks earliest incarnation was in India bud. "Dreadlocks" throughout Africa has no connection to Rastafarianism. And a lot of Indians want to preserve their culture. When they marry outsiders, it leads to ethnocultural erasure. Hence the reason why Hinduism is dwindling in the Caribbean. And Indians are being absorbed into other communities. And Indians do hire people from your community. And if they don't it has nothing to do with hierarchies. It has to do with it being a family business. This narrative that people from your background propagate about us considering wh... People above us is disinformation. What's insane is that you guys appeal to those hierarchies to convince people to be with you. Let's hope YT doesn't flagy comment.

Please explain to me what does the Hindu group come into that equation. That’s nonsense. In fact even the ganja , the hemp didn’t come from India it came from china in 8000 ad . The dreadlocks or loc historian trace it back to Africa as its origins because blacks were the first people created on the planet earth . The truth can be found within Parmahansa Yoganandas Books. The Autobiography of a Yogi and The Yoga of Jesus. Please read his books. Jesus in the Gospels is a metaphor for awakened Kundalini energy. The story of Jesus Crucifixion and Resurrection coincide with 5000-year-old yogic knowledge on how to raise the Kundalini energy. How the Cristos oil is secreted by the brain, makes its way down the spine and stays there for 3 days and 3 nights before you have the opportunity to raise it with force up the spine and break open your calcified pineal gland. This in turn awakens your third eye, which is receiving Christ, where you realize you are one with God. In the Old Testament Moses was the metaphor for awakened Kundalini. Moses meets God on the third day on top of Mount Sainai. Mount Meru, Mount Sainai, Mount Olympus, World Tree Iggdrasil are all metaphors for the spine. The realms are chakras, Heaven and Aesgard is Crown Chakra, from which our awareness fell to root chakra, Midgard, Earth. Fallen angels are our virtues marrying bodily desires leading to the offspring, our evil deeds or demons. Hinduism states Gods are made up of pure consciousness, meaning they are in the mind. For example Vishnu is the act of preservation, his avatars are Rama (Righteousness), Krishna (intellect), Parusrama (divine retribution), etc. if any one of these virtues is used for the sake of bodily pleasure, then you have welcomed demons. The Kingdom of God is within.

Inclusivity is where it's at bro. When we start accepting the fact that we are all the same but slightly different then there will be less and less to argue about. Why does Selassie or leonard howell does not wear loc? Rasta God, who is he? Does he wear a loc also? Why they wear loc? India brought ganja, curry, and inspired the wearing of dreadlocks. The first Rastafari were Christian Jamaicans who were Bible readers. When the first Rastafari like Leonard Howell worked along side the Indian indentured servants chopping sugar cane. In the evening the Jamaican workers would mingle with the workers in the Indian camps. This is where the influences would happen. What ones often fail to realize is that these early Rastafari were looking into their religious tradition and the Bible for the validation of what they were experiencing and learning. They were inspired to look into scriptures and found the Nazarite Vow and the and many passages supporting the cannabis as a sacrament. These early patriachs of Rastafari did not pray to any deity of India or Hindu faith. Also the term for God “Jah” is written in Psalm 68 of the Old Testament. It is not inspired by the term “Jai” in any way. The term Jah was attached to Rastafari through that specific Psalm that points to His Majesty Haile Selassie I fullfilment of prophecy. So it was always the Bible and scripture that was the final say and spiritual tradition for Rastafari not Hinduism

False information and Correction.. the Rastafari ‘ Nyabinghi order, Bobo Shanti and twelve tribes’ were inspired and influenced by many African ancestors. Like our ancestor Queen Nyabinghi from kenia/Uganda. She fought the English who’m wanted to take over Kenia/Uganda. Also the Mau Mau from Kenia was an influence and many other freedom fighters from AFRICA. The locks were inspired from dem and even before dem locks were worn by the Kushites also from Africa. Rasta look for our African ancestors and not the Indians. Rasta fought/ fighting for the rights of our african people and for Alkebulan. The name Rastafari comes from a real King of Kings, Lord of Lords Ras Tafari Makonnen. The spirituality part also came from Africa ITHIOPIA KEMET and not from India. And also from the Ethiopian King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of Judah Emperor HAILE SELASSI. So that is why your dots ain’t connecting with your theory. And btw rasta wears Locks no dread. Don’t confuse people and do your research right please. ❤️💛💚

Cope, what I gathered from all these comments is that the African diaspora is a confused mess of Christian pseudo history and cultural appropriation of Egypt, the fact that rastafarians admit that there is a connection to Indian Sadhus and that they call Marijuana Ganja is what makes this historically accurate, if you don't like facts then keep living in yur fantasy world, rastas are a offshoot of Indian asceticism mixed in with Christian mythology.

@user-vw6bk4pb4l The term "dravidian" comes from the sanskrit word dravida. It was a word used to describe the tamil languages, and the origin of the caste system is in the vedas. It's called the varna system. This pyramid like societal structure was based on the different aspects of the Dharmic creation god brahma, and his body parts were equated to the trades utilized in india. Over time, mostly those who were butchers or meat eaters were seen as the outcasts. When the british came and sought to divide india, they made it about skin color, placing themselves on the top of the pyramid, justifying their racism, rank and genocide.

@@dannydohma6808So you are saying there was no major issue of colourism linked to the caste system in India until the British arrived? And that sounds exactly like what the Belgians did in Rwanda with the Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda. Turned social caste into racial caste. Giving people ID cards assigned based on measuring their faces, noses etc. Which eventually led to a terrible genocide in 1994.

  • @dannydohma6808

    @dannydohma6808

@user-vw6bk4pb4l Yes, there is no record of skin color being the primary reason for a person becoming low casted in india. If that was the case, there won't be tamil brahmins at all, and I've seen dalits in india with blue/green eyes and fair skin. Low Castes in india was largely attributed to diet and profession involving meat. If a person in ancient india would be a butcher, for example, they would be considered unclean and not worthy of entering temples due to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism having strict rules against meat and animal slaughter/ hunting, Japan borrowed the Hindu caste system as well and it became a similar issue over there were butchers and meat eaters became heavily persecuted, similar to Africa where the british colonization occurred like india, the agenda of divide and conqueroring was a priority, instead of indians/Africans joining forces to rebel against the British empire in there homelands, they would be too busy fighting among themselves, Religion and skin color was the tool used here, With Africa they used white Jesus to justify conqueroring pagan/animistic Africa causing a spit between the traditionalists & converts to Christianity, in india they corrupted the varna system adding in pale skin color as the an indicator of the ruling class and status among the others.
