Many have commented on the speed with which Drazen played. True. Some, I trust, have mentioned his handles. They were really tight. But I think it very important to note his heart and just maniacal self-belief born out of his equally as maniacal work ethic. This man, in 1989, had the full belief that he can take on DJ and run circles around him -- one of NBA's best defenders. I love his heart!

At the end of the 80s I couldn't see Bird, Magic or Jordan but I was very happy to see Petrovic and Gallis. Even when I had access to the NBA matches, I could compare a few players with these two.

He was so much faster here at 24 and it's visible that he plays in a weird rythm for his new team (Real) that he humiliated on regular basis in previous years, so he is yet to have figured it out in his own roster, with a lot of jealous players around him. It's visible he is deferring when he should not, instead of shooting it whenever he felt like it. He was already back then a plug and play 25 PPG shooter NBA level, but the league was isolationist back then, so Portland benched him and he regressed a ton before reasserting himself with the Nets. But right at that very moment, he was a monster.

He would have won the game if it was Cibona year earlier. Madrid was regularly beaten by Drazen as rest of the European teams at the time since the best league was yugoslavian league that had teams like Cibona, Yugoplastika, Red Star belgrade, Partisan belgrade, Zadar… that were powerhouses in Europe and were in top 10 Euro teams almost every year

There are no words for describing this man. He was a genius in his field. I have never seen a greater player in my life. He was simply the Mozart of basketball, as we said in Italy (an Italian journalist invented this term).

Totally different players... Doncic has a good inch and a half on Drazen, bigger and stronger, better passer and post player. Drazen was my idol, but there's no way he is better than current Doncic. Kukoc surpassed Drazen in 1990. Doncic is Bodiroga on steroids.@@andreaspapadakis2602

if drazen would play in nba with this speed he still had in those years, he would be mvp of nba. He still had speed in his legs here...before they put him on weights and slowed him down. You can see how he is passing by his guards...in nba they figured out that speed is more important than strength and weight too late for him.

This is completely different than when he played for .nets later or croatia on olimpics when he moved as an elephant like Lebron today.

Ok... don't be distespectful. Drazen was a beast and could not be stopped and I agree he would get his numbers anytime against anyone. BUT he was not nearly as good a player as Larry Bird, who was the greatest player in the 80s and played basketball at the highest level ever with nos brain and skill. Há would be an all star, superstar and one of the best players in the NBA, but individually Larry Bird was still far superior

@@Luckymag-if4dw At ages 18-23 back then European players were on par with American players and in some cases they had more experience because they played against mature players in their domestic and international leagues. But once American players entered the NBA, training regiment was totally different. European basketball was amateur back then , becoming pro in the early 90s only. Eg in 1988 Soviet Union beat team USA that included many later NBA and Dream Team champions. That was quite a feat if you take intro consideration that USA in 1984 with college Michael Jordan swept the competition.

Larry was great player, but couldn't even be put in the same sentence with Dražen whose basketball skills, leadership and legacy are supreme.

For those disparaging Bird, he outplayed Petrovic statistically: 29 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists to 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists. And, when Petrovic played in the NBA, he was an all-star, but he wasn't better than Jordan.

if Real or Olympiacos played 82 games in an NBA season, with NBA rules and bigger court, they MIGHT win 10 games. Going 10-72 isn't something to be proud about. Plus most of the best players on these Euro teams tend to be Americans. And just look at all the FIBA Under tournaments. The US has won all of them consecutively recently. All of them. From U14 to U20.

@@Evocati2008 With the roster that they finished the season it would had been contenders for playoff entrance. Who understands basketball, can understand this. This "82 games" is just for show for Americans that don't know European basketball. For example, Olympiakos played 77 games in total. If we get out the playoff games of both domestic and Euroleague, it 's about 60 games. Yes, US won the young tournaments, but of the top 5 NBA players, 1 is European, 2 Africans and both Butler and LeBron are above 30

Nobody is comparing Bird to Drazen... But don't get me wrong Drazen was a master and had a short NBA career so nobody can say But given 10 years in the NBA and we would be talking about a huge legend... Add those European years in his beginning and he belongs with the NBA legends....He was skill and one of the best shooters the NBA will ever see..Like a Mashine!!!

you obviously dont know much about fiba basketball..let me inform you that Drajen is considered way superior to Parker period..Around the same exact time in fiba there were 3 more playersthat would have been elite in NBA..Oscar,Galis and Sabonic..Petrovic is not comparable to Bird since he is a sg/pg but Oscar is and by all standards and according to Bird himself and Kobe he could have been as lethal as Bird..Galis could outscore everyone even in the NBA exept Jordan as a solo scoring machine and Sabonic was definetely better than Robinson beyond a shadow of a doubt ,just watch them play against each other at 1988 olympics same exact age..question marks on Hakeem and Shaq..all of them are in the naismith HOF.
