Drawing With Three Weird Fountain Pen Nibs

In this video I demonstrate how to draw with three unusual fountain pen nibs designed for calligraphy.
These nibs are:
1. A "Concord Nib" modification by the Toronto Pen Company
2. A Music nib from Franklin Christoph
3. A Pilot Parallel nib with a "ruling pen" modification by the Toronto Pen Company.
All three nibs were fitted into an Opus 88 Jazz demonstrator pen.
I drew with Noodler's Green ink, on medium tooth drawing paper.

Thank you for showing the difference between these nibs. This is especially useful for artists which try to find new drawing instruments. Your comparison to artist´s brushes is helpful too, because round brushes behave different to flat brushes,.... After all: you have to experiment with pressure, angle, twist, etc. to find new expressions of each "instrument".

I can’t draw a straight line, and even stick men drawings people would scratch their heads wondering what I was trying to draw, but your videos are great. So informative, fast paced and fun . Thanks for great videos, I really enjoy them. 😎👍😀

Thanks for the kind words! I actually have quite a few drawing tutorials for the complete beginner. Anyone can learn to draw if they have the inclination and the patience.

Hey Marc, you might want to change to light to the upper left.your hand is blocking the light, can’t see the nib and the lines it is making. Thanks.

Thank you for the tip Eileen. I've started shooting slightly from the side in my last few video, and I think it's helped with clarity. Working on the lighting situation as well.

    1. Thanks for introducing me to the Concord. Looks interesting and expensive. 2. If it doesn't flex like a Triple Tail, I don't see how the music nib performs any differently from a stub.

I don't have much experience with stubs, but I think the main difference is that the tip is curved, whereas a stubs are flat and have rounded corners. My guess is that this nib, like the one on the triple-tail, only makes contact with two tines at certain angles, producing a very thin line, even when held perpendicular to the stroke. I need to draw more with it to fully explore its possibilities, but I suspect it has potential to produce some interesting results.

Thank you!! I’m interested in getting into fountain pen sketches. Have you tried the other sizes of the pilot parallels? Is the 2.4 mm the “best” one?

You're welcome. I've found the smaller sizes are easier to control, but have less line variation. Here's a video I made where I demonstrate how you can easily make the "ruling pen" mod yourself, and show mods in a number of different sizes. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKx5rsmEqbenj7A.html
