Drawing Horses (Gesture Drawing)

How to sketch horses using gesture drawing. In this video I am drawing horses up close. I'll show you how to approach making short gesture drawings of horses, and explain how to draw a subject if it's moving around.

A different video today! I'm out of the studio, drawing horses in nature!! ❤ Let me know if you enjoy this one!! I found it really fun to take my drawing outside and use the techniques i normally work with on a completely different subject matter. "Equine Figure Drawing" ??😅 ... do you have a favorite subject to draw other than the figure? Let me know 👇

Well done Siobhan! As a passionate horse rider and watercolourist I am aware of the challenges in horse sketching. I find you sketched some very credible and fresh poses. I have often tried to draw my horse from life but, as you said, horses keep moving. Mine came along to see what I was doing from close. I often had the sensation that he tended to turn back when I was trying to draw him, so I usually come back with sketches from behind while grazing. I think I would need to spend hours before I can see him head up and looking at me😂

Hi Siobhan, I hope you are well. This video was so inspiring. The scenery must have ignited your creative spirit... the horses seem so majestic yet gentle. I felt like I was right there with you...thank you for making this very special on-location video (which is edited beautifully). I've never been able to draw animals very well, but your demo gave me hope. We have a lovely spot on the coast here in California where there is a ranch/field of grazing sheep. They move much slower than horses, so maybe I will start with them! :-) 🐑❤

What a beautiful experience! The environment is so relaxing, peaceful, and inspiring and the nature around is just gorgeous! Your sketches are amazing and full of life. I like to draw mainly animals and in general big birds, like birds of prey, whooping cranes, etc. But I can do it only with a photo reference. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Yes, it's a bit difficult to draw birds of prey from life!! It's lovely to use really good photo reference for that. I really enjoyed getting out being in that beautiful landscape, it's good to do that every so often!! Thanks for watching :)

Great to see how your technique translates to a different subject. If you feel you need just a little bit of horse anatomy, I'd recommend Glenn Vilppu; you can find both quick drawings and longer demonstrations. I believe he keeps horses himself, so he's well acquainted with their anatomy. :)

Once again you have inspired me to get out and live life with my drawing tools in hand. I'm home more now so I'm planning on using some of that time to draw from life. The hardest part for me will be dealing with the frustration of a lot of bad or less than what I would like drawings during the process. I know it's worth it. I just need to let go. Thanks again.

Ah, that's always the challenging part! I think though that you'll quickly start to enjoy the feeling of connection that comes with drawing from life, and it will be more valuable than "good" drawings. Also, you're not the best judge of your own work, remember that 😆 .... maybe what you can do is set some time for a "proper" drawing session every once in a while to counter balance the process? Either way, I'm excited to catch up with what you do on instagram!

Very nice sketches! Bravo! It's nice to see you draw in nature. It doesn't look that easy, especially with the size of the paper. With the pierre noire, I encounter the problem that it always brakes when I sharpen it. Any advice on how to prevent this from happening ? Do you use cardboard box, elastic ribbens to store them? Also, at the end of the video, you use willow charcoal. Is that better for tones & lines compared to Pierre Noire ? Do you use fixatif outdoors ? Do you ever do outdoor study sketches in order to draw something more detailed in your studio ? Thanks. Best

Another good video! It would be interesting to watch you do a figure drawing, highlighting specific techniques, followed by a still life or landscape, demonstrating how what we learn from figures translates to other subjects.

Wouw, what a scenery!! What an awesome landscape you are in!! Weren't you scared to get a kick in the head? Whaha. Love your videos, love to see you work. The anatomy of the back legs of a horse doesnt make any sence; that's an original line! I like that.

Birds I imagine are particularly difficult to draw from life! You have to be very quick to capture it. Try it with one line! :)
