the moment teachers manage to sit and think about a better way to express this message like u and the rest of us students have, is the moment I feel like a lot more kids will fall into art. y? cuz discouraging kids by saying that the thing their interested in is "wrong" is just the worst thing u can do

I truly hope so! I was told not to draw anime since I was 5-6 and that made me hate them until teenage years (when I started doing as I want) and still up until watching this vid I didn't understand y teachers had such a negative response to a different style than the others kids' , thanks a lot 4 talking abt this :D

I've taken a massive break from art and I think the biggest reason for that was because I was focusing on my style over just having fun and drawing. I think you explained this really well and I'm excited to find out what is important to me in art!!

Just keep drawing you will not - NOT have your own style, if you keep drawing. On days you don't feel like drawing just copy a picture of something you like, anything really inanimate or living. The important thing is to then mix it in with drawing from no reference, try and recall what you've drawn before and put it on paper, doesn't matter if it looks like trash just keep drawing, you'll eventually notice that you will indeed have your style. Taking a break from art is probably the worst thing I've done personally for drawing, drawing should be relaxing it's all the mindset- when I'm taking a break I draw.

While I hate that it is still a stigma, it's nice to know that there is still support for topics like this!! One negative thing really clings to you for years, so I always appreciate listening to the fact that "it's okay!"

Drawing anime or cartoons is not bad, but having an anime point of view can really affect how you work without a reference. In my case i have tried and tried and i just cant draw already made things, it doesnt feel like myself, thats why i agree with you about being original in art. What sense does it make to see the same drawn thing everywere? When you draw something already made and just copying it, are you really expressing your values, knowledge and point of view?. Your vid really kept me thinking

I mean you can be original in art style and still draw fan art. Fan art doesn’t always exactly have to look the same to a T. Some people just like not having to think so hard about it, and fan art makes people happy. So imo I think you can express values, knowledge and your point of view within it.

I always listen "she/he drawn realism, is better than you" and this make my heart broke, but now i dont care

People in the PROFESSIONAL industry most of the time DON’T know how to draw perfect realism, sometimes they don’t know how to draw realism at all, and they are still hired to do jobs no matter what. Learning the basics is what you NEED, the rest is just if you WANT.

I started to draw with anime/manga, when I was just eight years old, until now I draw manga, and makes me so angry when I see someone saying that's not art, just because it's not """realistic""" and with these odd big eyes. Well, I think that anime is art, for me, it's an stylization who cames from realism, it's kinda a simplification, and because of this, I think is such a nice decision to learn the fundamentals of realism to know how we can express more feelings in our characters, and I don't think that we need to be an "master of realism" to do that, but when we understand how the things works we can do that. I like the phrase: "Understand the rules, and then, break them." Beijos do Ceará, querida!

My definition of art is when there is an inherent bit of your own philosophies, thoughts, feelings, or some form of just your own self expression as a person put into an illustration, a sculpture or anything of the like. The only time things do not qualify as art is when you really put no effort into it for example the supposed invisible sculpture that became infamous recently

@@chibicelesti4859 LOL agreed Yeah I believe all art should be qualified as art, but when you literally put no effort into it, how the heck is that self-expression?

One thing I always wonered about though: Why do people get shamed for "copying" anime (even when Anime itself comes with 1000 different styles, depending at which Era you're looking and there is no "one Anime style everyone is copying off) but you are not shamed if you are copy John Singer Sargent, Norman Rockwell, J.C Leyendecker, Bridgeman, Loomis...you name it. So I personally always find it a bit silly to shame someone for drawing anime. I agree with the fact that learn fundamentals first, apply style second though. But sometimes it's helpful to look at artist to see how they broke down a complex subject matter. But you don't have to draw realistic first in order to know how to stylize. You just need to know how to apply the fundamentals correctly so you can break the rules in a more appealing way!

@da room exactly! We all have our own way of learning things, I know it personally helped me to learn realism beforehand but is because I wanted to play with that at the time. It has led me to realize that drawing manga is actually a lot more complicated than people give it credit for, because you have to take into account all the organic parts you learned before and see how that would fit into your own unique manga style. And maybe different for each person, but also if someone is just starting to learn how to draw, like the original commenter said, it's important that they have something a little less daunting to draw that they could feel confident about. Going straight to realism I don't think it's good, only when one is ready. If someone doesn't want to go to realism though, that's their choice. Art is an individual journey, no one can dictate for you how you go about that journey

@Lisabëth Rosemõon Magical Drawings While I get what you're saying, I have to disagree. Yes you have a lot of anime inspired art out there as of late, however it's simply inspired. These artist take certain elements from the anime style and put their own twist to it. So while it is clear it is inspired from that style, it is drawn in that artist's own distinct way that let's their work stand on its own. Also no art style is 100% original. That artist took inspiration from somewhere one way or another whether they did it consciously or unconsciously. That's just my take on it, however you are entitled to your opinion.

@@autisticsonicfan Not to forget that an Art Style is just a tool. It works in a similar way to the language we speak. Most of us here on the internet speak english. But we're not all the same (we could get philosophical here and say "we are the same in a different sense...but that's an art video, not a thread to talk about philosophy lol") The style is just a tool that you use for your unique expression. @lisabeth Also, not to sound rude but you probably have just looked on Anime on the surface level. The 100 Isekai shows (as this seems to be a formular that is pretty popular right now). I would recommend watching some Animes outside of this surface level. Serial Experiements Lain for example. Or Tekkonkinkreet. Or any work by Satoshi Kon (fun fact, Satoshi Kons work was so popular that it constantly got ripped off in western Movies. An Example would be Black Swan. As Black Swan tells a similar story to Perfect Blue. Or Inception that ripped off scenes from Paprika (I think it was Paprika..or it was also perfect Blue I'm not too sure about that). Or Akira, which was pretty much ahead of it's time in terms with Animation. Or any Ghibli Movie as Hayao Miyazaki and his Team also have a pretty unique way of telling stories with imagery alone (while using the Anime style). Or Madoka Magica which looks pretty generic at first but gets extremly creative later on in the show. Same can be said about the Monogatari Series. Or Aku no Hana... i could name 100 of show that are outside of the Mainstream and can be seen as "Pretty unique" . These are all examples that use "Anime" as a style but in their own unique ways which makes the comment "Every Anime Artist is the same" obsolete. Same can be said about Manga by the way. Lets Talk about Inio Asanos work here. His Style is extremly unique , even when he was (of course) influenced by Manga and Anime. Or the Work by Jinsei Kataoka (Eureka Seven and Deadman Wonderland). Or Chi no Wadashi by Shūzō Oshimi which uses the Manga Style in a pretty clever way. Or Shimanami Tasogare by Yuhki Kamatani. Of course, in the end you don't have to like Anime. No one is saying that. But I just find it unfair to say "Anime/Manga looks always the same" . It's like going into a Art Nouveau exhibition and complaining that the Flower Patterns they used in that time all look the same. Or like going to a Rococo and Neoclassicism exhibition and complaining that the way , these people draw other people all look the same. On the surface level it might be true, but sometimes you have to take a closer look at art to see the fine differences in style and the respective uniqueness of each artist!

omg tysm for this!! literally summed up what i'd learned in recent years. i grew up with cartoons and anime, and I literally hated anyone that would tell me to not draw anime.. but a lot of the time the intention was to get me to branch out and not *just* draw anime. i would spend _so_ much time trying to search for what _anime_ art style I liked so that I could call it my own. i never wanted to draw realism, do studies, etc. b/c i only wanted to draw anime. i always used to get upset when ppl/ my fave artists stopped drawing in an anime artstyle b/c i thought the 'anime isn't real art' statement got to them. while I still do love anime and it is still a big part of my life, i wish i could tell my past self that it's ok to not draw anime. it's ok to branch out!! anime is beautiful, but there's so much more to art than an anime artstyle! i had such a fixed mindset about trying to prove ppl wrong by only drawing anime, that i didn't realize how much i was limiting myself. my reason for art quickly became my biggest wall, and i was never really improving, i was just bouncing between different artist' artstyles. only recently when i allowed myself to experiment with other styles & started putting more emphasis on learning fundamentals was when i really saw an improvement in my art. i thought i'd lose my 'identity' in art if i stopped drawing anime, but by letting myself explore.. i actually gained it :)

I think it would be fun hearing your thoughts on different mediums (like watercolours, coloured pencil, crayon ext. Also maybe include your favourite medium, some good brands, or even some tips on the medium but it’s just an idea :)

I get the whole thing of learning the fundamentals first and then experiment with art styles but the way i see it is that some people just wanna draw cartoons or anime for fun. And maybe later they might want to explore maybe something more realistic or even create a unique style. Everybody starts somewhere and chances are when you're young your interests usually contain cartoons and/or anime so naturally you want to draw your favourite characters and just have fun with it. So i don't believe that there should be this pressure from teachers or from other people in general to expand to different styles or learn to draw realistically first especially to young artists. Things will come naturally and if they want they will expand over time, not when someone just orders them to do so.

love your sketch and chat videos!!! i started out drawing in an anime style (that being my biggest influence when i began drawing more). i gravitated away from the cartoony style partly because of art teachers from high school but also because i discovered my own way of drawing. i still love all art styles and definitely agree teachers could be a bit nicer and explain why traditional styles are important too!!

Such an insightful video! This reminds me of a saying my teacher told me when he was teaching poetry which is another form of art. "You need to know the rules in order to break them" in other words you need to understand the basic fundamentals so that you can choose to keep certain elements in your art or simplify them/play around with them in the way YOU interpret the world.

These videos with art tips and just random drawings in the background really did help me with my story slump, it means a lot to me since it’s been a while since I actually felt like I was motivated to draw just random characters! So thank you waes!!!

Drawing anime is a good starting point, but in my experience you tend to grow out of it; then when you try to move on from it you struggle for ages. I agree with Waes here :) I started off with attempting realism when i was about 10 years old. I found it really difficult and soon after discovered anime speedpaints on youtube which made me want to draw like that more. I hit year 7 and had odd proportions in my drawings, the signature big eyes, blocky hair, but ofc it still looked like my art and i liked it! Halfway through grade 7 i realised I didn't like it as much and switched to semi realism. I l o v e d it! i got to combine the part of me that liked anime with the part of me that liked realism. But due to what i had practiced, that being anime, my foundations were bad. The proportions i drew were still off by long shots and it took years before i was able to reel that in and make it look nicer. I always wondered if i had started with the foundations of human proportions would i have improved faster? I believe yes.

"Teachers aren't getting paid to be nice." Is how they see it. I wish they were nicer though.

I've been watching your videos for years, whenever i get a new KZread account i make sure to subscribe to you, you're one of my biggest inspirations to paint or draw, your art is so beautiful it inspired me to learn different things and get out my comfort zone, your art is wonderful please keep painting

My only issue with drawing anime- style is that I spent so much time training myself to draw anime as a kid, that now as an adult, I'm STRUGGLING to draw any other style WITHOUT making it look like anime. I'm not a natural at art and it takes me a while to learn new things art- related, so I've been spending years now trying to deprogram myself so that I can draw any given genre (E.G., Western style cartoons, life drawing, illustrations, etc).

that's why i like the thought of art style. they are the reflections of how we draw things + our personality. it's like your own avatar.

This advice really helps. I’ve been wondering how I can come into my own style with art but it seems like I’m just copying different parts of other anime styles and you really cleared things up that I need to look more at how I personally interpret things!

There's something I wanted to address that I and another artist may experience and it's about how you have this idea in your head but you go to sketch/draw it and just doesn't come out the way in your head. I have this idealized image of how I want my art to look and convey, but I'm not sure how to get it through on paper. Though aware I have to practice but I feel like I'm confusing myself even more. If that makes sense. But I love your take on the whole Anime isn't real art. Since I understand two parts of the argument. Anime can be limiting if you're just drawing one or two types of body proportions. But it doesn't have to be that way to stay fresh

Listen your there for school to learn the body, objects, etc. So of course they dont want you to draw cartoons/anime. In order to draw bodys in ANY STYLE you must FIRST learn to draw from real life. You dont learn much at all just drawing anime. In order to "bend the rules" you must first learn the rules in the first place. Then after grasping the concept, only THEN you can add ur own style anime, western , etc. Learn about form first before you add your own style. Is like you bake a cake and you skip all the important stuff and jump right ahead of decorations/frosting. No!! You must do and learn the foundation first and then do the frosting.

I think using the simplification of art as learning material can be beneficial. Real-life anatomy and clothing folds can be difficult for a brain to process and another artist's work can help translate that information to one a beginner can understand. The most important part of a study is to analyze why something is happening-- why are the clothes folding here or why is there a shadow here. Beginner artists can learn a lot that from not only real life references, but also other artists. I agree that genuine art does not necessarily mean art that one enjoys making. A person could love making fanart of their favorite shows and doing commissions, but that art is only sometimes genuine. Honest art simply comes from the heart. Thank you for this amazing video! I love to discuss and hear about other artist's thoughts about this.

Practice style and the essentials together so that it's easier for you to learn essentials and you're developing your own style, an example is get a reference of something you want to draw, draw it like the picture you have (you can add take away whatever just make it look close-ish to the picture don' t copy completely ) then put maybe how draw eyes or hair, buildings, plants, animals, expatriate things etc. Maybe this helps?

Think about that, now i really appreciate my graphic arts teacher since he always mention animation (or anime art style) equal with other type of art. The only thing he taught us that we should all master the basic knowledge, master those object shape, human figure before we get to move on to create our own style or follow our desired art fields.

Actually i've seen a lot of people saying they went through this experience and honestly even if it never happened to me I've always thought that some teachers can be very rude in the way they say things even if they mean good, something just because they actually hate anime style. But i agree with the rest, i started drawing because of anime but only after i started taking reference from real life is that i started to get better at drawing and found out how i wanted my stuff to look like. It takes time but I've come to think that finding out this things really makes your art come to life and actually represent you... Uwu

i always have understood the you need to know the rules to break them mindset of study from life then you can do style but i also think too there needs to be a step in the process of studying other peoples art styles too! Because once you've studied from life, you'll see what other artists have prioritized and be able to conceptualize how they've simplified it in their piece and you can maybe steal that short hand once you KNOW what the shorthand is for! Idk i think its missing step that can be ignored in the experimenting process. because i know how to draw from a reference, but part of being able to draw a thing from my head that isn't default is also looking at other artists styles to get an idea of ways to simplify.

i completely agree !! i started out drawing anime and only saw improvement once i started drawing from human reference, and now my style is still cartoony but it's more of a reflection of what i like, not what everyone who likes the anime style likes if that makes sense

I was super fortunate to have an extremely encouraging teacher haha. I love anime, but I spent a lot of time doing studies of realistic people too. Anime was fantastic inspo for dynamic poses and angles tho, and my teacher actually encouraged that I go for it since I got the general basics down(we spent a while talking about Murata’s art too LOL). On my AP design portfolio, I ended up going pretty heavily stylized, but made it out with a 5, and a couple of my pieces were literally just anime-style OCs😅 so even collegeboard will be fine with anime/cartoonish styles as long as the basics are solid👌👌 (I gave my teacher so much stress over deadlines tho rip, bless him for dealing with me LOL) Oof, this is long lol. I really did love my teacher tho, so I wanted to share TvT👏👏

Primeiramente, a Rin ficou muito fofa :) Segundo, ao mesmo tempo que eu entendi mais ou menos o que você quis dizer, eu não sei se eu entendi completamente Mas se eu não estou enganada você quis dizer tipo quando uma pessoa não quer se dar mais liberdade em algumas partes do desenho porque isso iria diferir do estilo 'padrão de anime', tipo "ah eu queria desenhar o olho menor, mas daí não vai mais parecer anime" Mas sinceramente todos os artistas "de anime" que eu sigo tem sua maneira singular de desenhar, pessoalmente eu vejo estilo de desenho (nesse caso, anime) mais como uma base, e dentro dessa base o artista pode achar seu estilo próprio, tipo quando você sabe que esse traço é de tal artista, mas vc ainda consegue reconhecer como sendo estilo de anime. O problema é se limitar, não o estilo de anime em si. (desculpa pelo textão ksks)

Sim! Entendo completamente! É que anime em si ja tem meio que uma formula de simplificaçoes que se repetem nos estilos, sabe? Que se voce ja parte daí, vc se priva de descobrir por conta propria a sua forma de interpretar imagens, pq ja tem aquela predisposiçao a voltar pra formula ja criada, a mais facil. Basicamente eu quero encorajar pessoas a nao so ver referencias em anime, pq outras artes tem formas tao interessantes quanto de simplificaçao e interpretaçao da vida! Veja de tudo um pouco que vc vai descobrir coisas que nem sabia que gostava!

This kinda sucks. Not the video mind you, cause it was pretty good. I mean that this whole thing now has me questioning whether I draw people in an anime style because that is what I find entertaining or that is my interpretation of what people look like. A question that will probably pop up in my head when drawing. Good job, if your goal was to make me think you've done it and then some.

ye I start drawing because of anime lol Then 8 years later I realized that my art is not improving because I stuck with the same stuff over and over again. So I begin to do some studies and oh my lord it helps me a lot.

I personnaly had a good experience drawing manga style in art class. Both art teachers were not fans of the genre by any means, but they didn't discouraged me and my friend to keep doing it. If your teachers do, try showing that you can do other things than anime or cartoon, and willing to try whatever style of the course they want you to do. That will also help aquire a larger set of skills for illustration and character design! Because as much as you might want to only draw anime style, you won't be able to only learn from the " how to draw manga" books. Trust me on that one. learning realism will help you a ton, no need to be perfect at it, but getting a jist of it will help your art journey, and get your art teachers off your back ;P

Hiya ! I’ve never really gotten into drawing in the anime style but I do watch a lot of It. I love to see people draw in in but I think that people who just draw in anime should expand. Its not me thought so I won’t tell them or anyone what to do in that matter

Hey, I’m not meaning to be rude, but does that mean people who do realistic art should “expand” as well? There’s nothing wrong with doing what you’re good at, and you can always always get better! I’m not sure you realize how vast and unique and varied anime styled art can be.

Your point in the video about art teachers wanting their students to discover things in their own way and by themselves without any restrictions reminds me of a quote from a book i read , it goes: "Further more, what is to be learned is too elusively simple to be grasped without struggle, surrender, and experiencing of how it is. As one Zen master said to his now enlightened pupil: If I did not make you fight in every way possible in order to find the meaning [of Zen] and lead you finally to a state of non-fighting and no effort from which you can see with your own eyes, I am sure that you would lose every chance of discovering yourself. "

I agree 100%. I now struggle understanding human bodies, environment or studying anything at all because I have become so used to seeing things in terms of lines instead of volumes. It really takes away my freedom of expression in the way that I'm now tied to the paradigm created by my mental library. I've I wish I had known this sooner.

Can you talk about how to color with watercolor smoothly? Because I am not really good at it and you seem like you can help me out...

i don't really know how art classes are going nowadays (not to mention there's so many resources to take art classes from omg), but I do think that if the "drawing anime is bad" discourse still comes up from teachers, there needs to be a rework. Honestly they should do a compromise, like maybe you spend most days out of the week doing studies but then at the end of the week you get to do a free draw day or something? I think while it's important to be building up the foundation of art principals like composition and color and anatomy yada yada, it's just as important to build up things like inspiration and experimentation, after all drawing is supposed to be enjoyable ^^

I'd love if you could teach how to do studies of the human body! I don't know how to do studies or make the limbs look natural and not stiff, would love some coaching

My art teacher in 6th grade didn't neccesarily tell me drawing in an anime style was bad, but she had a more realistic ciriculum, and so thats what i drew, but i remember hating it, because i practiced anime art so much more often and i didnt see why producing art that i percieved as ugly was beneficial, and i feel like thats a lot of the reason why even now, years later, i stray away from most realism, i feel like its something a lot of artists have to deal with in general, just feeling a need for perfectionism, and sometimes the simple stylized art is easier to perfect, and so that makes it safer. i really appreciated my highschool art teacher, because she encouraged me and another friend to do anime art, and even gave us excersize print outs, but also had realstic art in the curicullum. i feel like not being forced to choose between one or the other was just the perfect middle ground to help my art develop naturally to a point where i find myself drawing in a realistic anime mish mosh, and allowing myself to try my hand at realistic studies as well. Maybe this is just a senseless ramble, i dunno. ty for the video, i enjoyed it. 💖

Im was were Lucky beacuse all My art teacher's i had so far excepted the fact i Drew anime since i was so good at it and even so they did they Still wanted me go try out new stuff and i did learn some stuff from realistic pervspectiv and it really helped me to even when i Drew anime i got learn stuff on the Day that helped me they even suggest me art school since there daughter likes drawing anime and manga too so for me My art teacher had allways supported me and which more could do so beacuse not all art teachers do and grateful for there help too

Honestly, I have to agree with you cuz at first I always drawing in an anime style then suddenly started trying to draw realistically, I did study most aspects that seemed important to me but my art never felt like I was the one doing it then I tried ditching the "anime isn't art" mindset and said "this is how I view this" instead and it naturally turned into an anime-ish art style.

I think having “anime references” would be much better as showing forms in motion. If a still image with complex perspective and storytelling a much better reference would be manga. Tokyou Ghoul is an excellent manga reference of complex storytelling with single pages and perspective. Another good reference for in motion would be olympics recordings. Great way to show movement and complex poses

i hadde the same problem with teachers in school, but mu love was for tattoos. i got lesser grades simply because a drew tattoo designs. it makes me so sad that these types of art dosent get the cread they deserv....

I'm in high school I'm a freshmen and it's my second day of school anyways they never told me this but most of the art teachers I had love anime so I never had this experience 😅

I’ve always found it boring to study in general my brain just won’t let me sit there look at ways on the screen or In from of me and draw what I see. I get irritated and just annoyed, it’s like when I study for a math test, and then I don’t draw for a week because I genuinely get upset that it’s not the way I want it to look. This is why I did so bad in school especially test because studying makes me want to throw a fit, even if it’s something I love like art

Hello, After I saw your video I think you can ignore that opinion Because it's just teacher's subjective idea And don't worry about this. Because it's not a fixed problem like math. There is no answer to art. the same goes for life. It's up to me to decide how I'm going to live, It is not an important matter what other people think Because it only reveals the limitations of the person who denies art and I think your anime art is good art😊

🇺🇸🦩🧊: Actually i think SOME art classes don't let you draw by yourself, like, they say what " is " an art and what " is'nt ", and want you to draw stuff like.. Characters from movies everyone knows ( example: Harry Potter ) in THEIR style, and don't really let you create new stuff ( original characters, characters from series, movies and games that you like, etc.. ). Im not trying to say things like " art classes are trash, you should'nt try it ". I do art classes in the school i study normal things and i think it helps me. It helps me to find color palettes, to draw realistic shadow and light, and things like it. Thank you for reading, you are a really good artist and my new inspiration! P.s.: talking from Brazil
