Drawing a Fluffy Cat with Coloured Pencils | Part 1 | Focus on the Eyes

Part 1 of drawing this lovely Fluffy Cat and we’ll be focusing on the eyes.
I’ll talk you through how to layer your colours to create the depth and detail needed for realistic eyes, the techniques I use to remove pigment to keep highlights really nice and sharp, and how to keep your darks dark while adding shadow. Plus, I’ll mention a few useful tips that I always swear by when drawing in coloured pencil.

Materials used for this Fluffy Cat:
Support: 25x35cm White Pastelmat Board
Coloured Pencils:
Faber Castell Polychromos: Cold Grey 2, Cold Grey 5, Dark Sepia, Caput Mortuum Violet, Warm Grey 4, Walnut Brown, Sky Blue, Light Cobalt Turquoise, Light Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue-Greenish, Cold Grey 1, Light Ultramarine, Delft Blue, Paynes Grey, Dark Indigo, Black, Warm Grey 2, Light Yellow Ochre, White
Caran D’Ache Luminance: French Grey 10%, French Grey 30%, Buff Titanium, Sepia 10%, Raw Umber 10%, Sepia 50%
Caran D’Ache Pablo: Cocoa, Granite Rose, Brownish Beige, Ash Grey
Derwent Lightfast: Oyster, Arctic, Taupe, Fossil Grey, Persian Orange
Derwent Studio: Chocolate, Copper Beech, Gunmetal
Caran D’Ache Museum Aquarell: White
Other Tools: Slice Manual Pen Cutter, Kneadable Putty Eraser, Paper Stumps, Scotch Magic Tape, Embossing Tool (fine)
Transferring Your Image
The best way to transfer your image onto Pastelmat is to use a projector, however you can use transfer paper to transfer. Simply lay the transfer paper under your image on top of your Pastelmat and trace around the outline.

Does anyone know where to find the reference picture or the line art Please?
Love your work Bonny. I have 140 LB hot and cold pressed watercolor paper. Will they work with Prismacolor pencils?

Thank you 😊 yes - I love coloured pencil on cold press but you might find it less of a challenge on the hot press 😊
Your work Bonny is truly stunning and so real like , I have the need to reach out and pet them all. Thank you for sharing your tips and talent here for us all. I do have one question and that is, do you have a place were we could buy the line work, so we can follow along with you? I can not draw at all? if not then I will try and find a line work of a cat and just go for it....Thanks and you keep well and safe...pat

Hi, I'm sorry I missed your comment! I'm afraid I don't have anything like that at the moment. The line art is available to those who sign up to my Patreon channel. Yes, I use the artograph inspire, however they no longer make them. I recommend the Pico Genie 550 plus 2 as a direction comparison, or for cheaper go for the Pico Genie Impact 1, 2 or 3 :)

is there a line drawing of this pretty cat?
A floating eyeball doesn't look atractive...LOL Understatement of the century. Mine don't look atractive with context either. Still struggle with scale and for now I think Im better off sticking with botanicals,before I waste more precious pastelmat on a smiley face that gives me the evil eye :P
