Why doesn't it look anything like the reference? Or is that intentional? If so, then why have a reference at all?

It's very possible that the view of the pear seen by the camera is not exactly the same as seen by the artists eye. I know. That sort of negates showing the reference.
What type of pencil is it? Pastel? Charcoal?
