DRAPING a CORSET style MINI DRESS - THISISKACHI DIY

INTERESTED IN THE DRESS?

I MADE A BELT OUT OF THIS PATTERN:
• EVERYDAY CORSET style ...
It is one of the most pleasant things to drape a pattern directly onto the dress form and see an idea come to life right in front of your eyes. In this video I will show you my technique of draping patterns directly onto my dress form and thus creating a pattern.
As I am not a professional pattern draper, this is not a professional method but rather a method that works for me and that I wanted to share with you. It is easy enough for beginners as there are no intense shapes needed.
If you're new here, I'd recommend the BASICS - SEWING SCHOOL playlist, you will find all the episodes of my classes there:
• CUSTOM fit dress form ...

    This is just a bodice! (I don’t blame you for not knowing English is weird and hard- plus the word corset is being heavily misused by fast fashion) If you’d like to know the difference between a corset, variations of a corset, and a bodice I’ll provide some simple definitions- Bodice: a close fitting upper part of a dress, typically from the chest to the waist Corset: A garment made with well structured fabric and steel/metal boning to temporarily change the size of your waist or cinch it in to accentuate it- there’s both underbust and overbust. Waist trainer/waist cincher: a garment designed to specifically target your waist (abdomen) area in order to specifically slim your natural waist and potentially change its size Bustier: looks similar to a corset but it’s indented purpose is to work like a push up bra and not cinch your waist- they also tend to use plastic boning which will not change your body shape

    Hello beautiful Kachi, thanks so much for your video, and all the heart you put into it. I had to write a comment, regarding your disclaimer, because I couldn’t let this pass... I want to let you know, that you are correct, this is a Corset, not a bodice. There is a difference between both, a corset has boning, and a bodice doesn't. As a suggestion, review some sewing books regarding so and don't forget the history, so we all can learn. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, you're doing great! Love Gretchen

    In today's fashion a corset is commonly known as any bodice, bustier, or corsets with a lace up in the back. So by today's standard it is definitely a corset in my opinion. I do bridal alterations on almost every brand out there. If it hooks or laces up the tag will say "Corset or Corset back" on it. In the Victorian era it was an undergarment that eventually turned in to a bra. I live in the U.S.A.

    In English, we use the word corset pretty loosely too. If you want the technical definitions, corsets were the structured, steel boned undergarments worn during the Victorian era. Sets of stays are the similarly structured undergarments worn throughout most of history. Boned bodices are everything else with a similar structure as to what you're making.

    This would technically be a boned bodice. Yes, most people in America will still call this a corset because of the style of the bodice but it does not function as a historical/contemporary corset would, as in giving bust support and creating a desired body shape (not by tightening the waist, this was only done by aristocracy and royalty in Europe historically)

  • @CandycaneLane999
    @CandycaneLane9993 жыл бұрын

    Cold in Canada too💙! I think your lining fabric was not sturdy enough to give the support the boning needs. If you had used fusible interfacing on your fashion layer, sewed channel's between your fashion fabric and lining layer then inserted boning it should solve that problem, but really it looked like a ruching design choice in final design

  • @THISISKACHI

    @THISISKACHI

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yea that could very well be! In the lilac corset, I fused the lining layer and the outer layer together by adding fake boning channels on the outside. Could be that those prevented the folds. Thank you! 🥰

    I am a VERY experienced sewer, and I actually cried while trying to make sense of your skirt "pattern". I came to this video hoping that you would give direction as to the pattern pieces ON the fabric to show how they are laid. I ended up with a front (cut 1) back (cut 2) and an unknown piece that says cut 2, but the pattern pieces don't fit together, the letter triangles don't meet up, and there is absolutely nothing (like a diagram of all the pieces on fabric) to show how to manage the grain and how to place them. Fabric yardage would also be nice. You went step by step through the corset, but rushed through the skirt in less than 1 minute without any specifics! I have made many, many pdf patterned clothing and never had any trouble before. There needs to be more information both on the pattern pieces themselves and a step by step instruction sheet. I am, as usual, on a tight deadline and this took up WAY too much time for something that should have been simple. Please edit your pattern and add an instruction sheet. Thank you.

    Hi, I am new to your channel. Your dress is beautiful! I have a few questions about your process. Why use bias tape and not add seam allowance whilst draping? And what type of marker do you use? Is it erasable?

  • @THISISKACHI

    @THISISKACHI

    3 жыл бұрын

    Im not quite sure what step of the process you are referring to with the bias tape as I am using it for multiple purposes. I don't add seam allowance to the pattern while draping because for me it's easier to see what I'm doing without. I also generally never add seam allowances to any of my pattern because I prefer it that way while cutting out (I always get the pattern paper caught in my fabric scissors and I'd rather add the seam allowance by eye while cutting out). I use washable markers, you can go on Amazon and find them if you search. I will add a link to the ones I am using in my description ones I find the time. 🥰

    I think spiral boning is too stiff for the underwire. But I haven't tried it so I don't know for sure. I would recommend heavier cotton canvas as lining, as well as more structure around the cups and in the middle front. 🥰

    Cutting tight fitting garments on bias defeats the purpose of tight fitting. You shall never cut fabric for corsets or corset like items on the bias. To avoid wrinkles I should have ironed interfacing on which is sth I knew I should do and have done for my next project. It solved the wrinkles 😊

    isn't the skirt she made a full circle skirt? I'm starting to learn sewing, but I know math haha. And her quarter was 90 degrees so 90 degrees times 4 would be 360? The skirt also looks to be quiet full in the end... I'm not complaining just confused!

    Bustier (from French) top is another way this style top is called in English. Anything that resembles old corset shape with light boning, but is fashionable can be called a bustier.

    In german the word that should be closesed for bodice whould be "Mieder" I think. I now that there is another one but Mieder should be fine. Edit: Yes Bodice = Mieder in german the other thing was stays = Schnürbrust in german

    Hi! I think you could say it's a bustier, but I don't think anyone should go crazy if you used the word "corset". Fashion and sewing is art and art is known for it's non-exact and all-over-the-place nature when it comes to creating something, especially when you're inspired by something but you're recreating it according to your individual style. So everyone should mind their own business and should just stop being naughty towards people who dare to create something new and beautiful. 🙂 The dress turned out amazing!

    People call them corsets but it is not the technical term. You would just call it a bodice with boning or something like that

    Hi! M.A. in English w/ Deutsch für meine zweitere Sprache. 'Corset,' 'stays,' 'bodies,' und 'bodice' sind zehr technische Wörter, und es wahr, das dies 'bodice' sind ist. Aber, zumindest für Amerikanische Englisch, ist eine kleidung mit wahr oder falsche 'boning channels' und ein form-fitting bodice eine 'corset-dress,' wann es eine corset mit oder nicht ist genant. Ich hoffe dass das hilft, und vergeben Sie bitte dass meine Wortschatz ein bißchen zu klein ist. Danke für KZread benützen!
