    Another point to consider: Matt is younger than the others, with less experience. He was 24, just a year or so out of college, when he joined PTX, while the others were 28 (Kevin), 27 (Scott & Kirstie) and 26 (Mitch). And they’d all been singing together, professionally, for 6+ years. Matt is talented, well-trained, and hardworking, but stepping into Avi’s shoes...took a lot of courage.

    Yeah, taking over a part that someone else did for *years* in a successful group that's already won major awards, with millions of fans already loving the voice & pretty unique skills of the person you're now replacing! That's got to be so much pressure, from within as well as without, to be perfect. On the one hand, the other members chose you, so they must have faith in your skills & ability to work with them & you've made new song arrangements & practiced together for a few months now. On the other hand, all those fans will be watching your first live public appearance with them & possibly ready to tear you apart if you screw up. 😯 (Not that PTX fans are the type to really do that, but I'm sure it's still what went through his head at some point!)

    Avi’s something like 31, and he often said that his accessible range has been going down at the rate of about 1 step per year as he ages. Matt’s six or seven years behind him - he’ll get there, but it might take some age before he can start hitting those lower notes with good support.

    The thing I love about Matt, is that you can tell that he is working hard to get better. His confidence has grown leaps and bounds this past year, and you can really hear it in his singing. What a credit to the other members for knowing Matt was the right fit, and that he would come into his own, it just takes a little time. I look forward to hearing him more now that he is starting to get more solo parts. His voice is beautiful.

    This was actually the song that made me fall in love with Matt. And I love that you took your time to look more into him. You truly make an effort to understand the artists you react to and appreciate them and I really admire that. A lot of people miss Avi and since you're newer to them, you didn't have the time most of us had to learn about Matt and see the journey he had with the group not only as a singer, but as a person too. Especially since you pretty much jumped into PTX head on, old stuff and new stuff at the same time it's only natural that you're gonna compare Avi and Matt. People who are criticising that probably forgot that we all went through the same thing. Only we had much more time than you and got to know Matt over time. Thank you for this reaction. It made me laugh again. You looked downright scared of them at one point :D. As if aliens landed on Earth and you are unsure of what they're gonna do. I kinda feel like that sometimes when I'm watching Pentatonix and then I go and watch some behind the scenes to remind myself that they're a bunch of goofballs who are actually people too :D.

    Avi Kaplan is a unique talent but Matt is a really strong, smooth bass with a little different tonal quality (not worse, just different). He had a huge challenge when he joined, having to learn complex arrangements of a huge book of PTX songs with a group that takes such pride in their performance. There's always a break in period and the results, I think, speak for themselves. He had (has) enormous shoes to fill - Avi is an iconic and in many ways incomparable performer. Matt is doing a great job in a sometimes thankless role; Kevin, on the other hand, is just Kevin. What's left to say about the man? And not to overlook the other three - Scott again shows his smooth, mellow voice and wide range, Kirstin has never looked or sounded more sultry and sexy and Mitch is superb as always.

    Hey look, PTX optimizes their songs to highlight each others voices. So, when Matt sings songs designed for Avi, it's not going to sound as good. And now, PTX is learning how to arrange to maximize Matt's voice. I too still occasionally miss Avi when I hear Matt sing his parts in older songs, but I also delight in the new arrangements that highlight his voice. Both feelings are fair, I think.

    Hello, it's MK, your Neighbor what a good way to put it. Matt has a lot to live up to on their older covers where Avi sang but on their newer stuff that was designed for Matt he kills it. To me Matt does such a good job performing live too. The energy he brings is infectious he makes you have fun watching can really hype a crowd. He definitely won me over.

    You worded that perfectly. I go through the same exact feelings. There are songs that we want to keep hearing because they are Pentatonix classics but the fact is they are not songs that fall to Matt's Talent and it sounds different. It's then that I do miss RV it's on the old songs because they sound different now. But can you imagine what it must feel like to be ask to learn every song they've ever done and they're extremely busy career and stand there in front of a crowd knowing he's not being himself he is being asked to sounds like somebody else and it isn't going to work and the fans are going to be disappointed. That takes a lot of Bravery. The when they do new things which they have plenty of material now after a couple of years with Matt, it's perfect! And Matt is extremely talented but it is with a different style of Bass. They're like night and day and that's the way it is and sometimes it hurts because I miss Avi to. But I appreciate Matt's skills and the good attitude he came into all of this with after all, he said no to auditioning. He said never ever could he do with Avi Kaplan does. And so he got tricked into it and he was just stuck with Pentatonix standing there when the elevator doors opened. He didn't ask for this but I've never seen him complain about all of the drama. All I've seen is how grateful and humble he is and how overwhelmed he is about how nice the fandom has been to him. Did this Channel watch You're a Mean One mr. Grinch? And I don't mean the cartoon oh, I mean Pentatonix's cover? It really is a fun number and very dynamic in concert. I also stand by what I said and I don't take a single word back either. Just turns out the other channel suits my personality and my taste so that's the channel I watch. Different Strokes for different folks.

    😂😂 Your face over Kevin's trumpet sounds! Yeah, I like what they're doing with Matt too even though sometimes I still wonder what Avi would sound like on one of their newer songs. As soon as they announced him I knew it would be fine (though different of course) because it's not like they didn't know what they were doing when it came to putting together a successful group. I do think it would still be fun if they brought Avi back as a "guest" 6th performer for a few songs. It would be REALLY interesting to see what Matt & Avi could do together with their skills. What songs would the group pick & how would they each use their voices?

  • @elizabethsantersero9597
    @elizabethsantersero95974 жыл бұрын

    I think part of the difference, too, is that this was some of the first stuff that was created with Matt as part of the mix from its inception. I felt this one, "Attention" and "New Rules" showed what the group was becoming with Matt fully integrated, and I enjoyed them all very much :-) Just as they have always chosen the leads to serve the song, I think they create the arrangements to suit the individual gifts of the members of the group, so it makes sense that he really begins to shine at this point - thanks for doing this one!

    This is one of my fave New PTX songs! I love Matt here, Scott is super smooth, Kirstin is smoldering and in gorgeous voice, Mitch gets to punctuate the song with those high notes, and Kevin brings back the trumpet from “Piece of My Heart” on the Sing-Off. The arrangement takes a risk by setting the rap in the original song to a melody that they created, and I like it better than the original. Oh, and their costumer is on point with the turquoise theme for all of them!

    And that’s why I enjoy your reactions so much; you heard Matt do something I hadn’t heard before, but will listen for next time. Avi vs. Matt? That’s like comparing apples and oranges-we can like and appreciate what each one brought to the group. And KO on the trumpet??? Remember that he did a version of that on The SingOff (flugelhorn or trumpet?). Well, it’s Kevin. Enough said.

Kevin’s high jazz trumpet takes your breath away.

It may not necessarily be your preferred style, but you should try out their cover of Waving Through A Window. It is a piece from the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. Scott Has the lead through most of the piece, but Avi and Kevin just bring it all together.

    They are both very excellent natural bass vocalists. The difference is that they do not share the same timbre exactly. Matt is a natural bass, and has a richer timbre than most(I would consider him more of a lyric vocal bassist or basso cantate), but (if I am not mistaken) Avi would be considered a basso profundo, more in the realm of Glenn Miller, Mikhail Zlatopolsky, J.D.Sumner, Rodney Britt and Tim Storms.
