Exactly. When Drake first drop the song I was wondering how it would affect Kendrick but then I really started thinking about it like if you were doing that why wouldn’t you keep the receipts? Because him just saying that doesn’t cut it. Especially because all the drake fans and they’re working overtime. I think they are Drake fans that have only slept a combination of two hours since this beef started but they’re going around telling people that all weekend. I think Drake got the idea from his fans because just saying it doesn’t mean shit if you don’t have the receipts. And in a battle where people have been saying things like “whoever has the receipts wins” that’s one scenario where the receipt should be the easiest to produce.

In 8 mile it’s the black guy with a huge following and has the “free world” label but he’s not actually from all the things in Detroit he raps about he goes to private school and “his parents have a nice marriage.” Eminem is a white guy sure but he’s from Detroit and in the end nobody cares so much about his flaws as they care about being misrepresented by someone who’s separating their art from their origin. Except in 8 mile the white guy is the one who’s culturally tapped in and the black guy is the one emulating the culture for hits and money. I keep hearing a lot of Drake fans talking about racism but it’s not even about race it’s about culture, and culture wise he’s not Eminem he’s Clarence.

13:24 is my thought exactly and why I thibk Kendrick's approach is unique. Dot's diss felt like a play (theater) where he is exposing Drake to an audience... While in generally, other diss songs (including Drake's) usually goes laser focus on their target/s "Ay, F*ck you" "F*ck me? no, f*ck you!" mindlessly with almost same beats... Kendrick considers the audience paying attention of the play, (even breaking that fourth wall "Say, OV-HOE" and "Step This Way", and masterfully tell the story using different styles for each part... Which is what he does in all his Albums

Bomani, followed you for over 13 years and appreciate your work. However, even though I'm neutral in this beef - despite being a Torontonian and living a twenty minute drive from "the Embassy" (i.e. Drake's home base) - the crazy thing is Drake is actually African-American! That's the crazy thing! This isn't like a Skepta, Stormzy or Dave (UK Hip-hop artists) that have an African origin but run the hip-hop scene in the UK, Drake's dad was from Memphis and Drake spent part of his childhood there. He is literally "just like you" in the way that any Canadian can be! In fact, a lot of the knock on him up here was that he succeeded, relative to other Canadians, *because* he was African-American and had African-American roots instead of being African-Canadian or Afro-Caribbean-Canadian. The thing is despite the entertainment factor, I can imagine how isolating this must be for Drake - for many he's "too "Canadian" to be American, and too "American" to be Canadian and that's before the racial element.

You bring up race when I don't think it's at the heart of the problem. Not like us in this instance refers to his pillaging of the culture. Using hip hop as a tool instead of an art. That is the main disconnect between Kendrick and Drake. Is it about the art or is it about fame?

My maybe corny take, some fans think that feuds in hip-hop enhance the genre/culture, but NO ONE EVER demonstrates how the rivalries elevate it to a more lyrically sophisticated mainstream. The only results are: nothing, a career ending, and rarely but disturbingly, deaths.

The issue people are failing to understand is it's not as if Drake is "from" Memphis but to say he has no claim to African American culture because he's from Canada is like telling the kids of Jamaican immigrants in London or the kids of Nigerian immigrants in Washington, DC they cannot access or claim elements of their parents cultures lol
