WA-8000 with Sony Russian Tube Mod will get you closer than any other mic. Not only does Drake use the Sony c800G, but lots of your favorite records were recorded on it from Kanye, to DJ Khalid, Mariah Carry, Boys II Men, 112, P Diddy, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Nas and the list goes on. Even Jack Harlow recorded a few tracks with this mic. Originally it costed around $7000 when first introduced back in the 90's but due to shortages and inflation price went up. Stam Audio SA-800G comes in second place over the WA-8000 for closest sounded to the original c800G.

Almost all major hip-hop artist are running u87’s or c800’s. You can hear them everywhere. I think the price of the chain is for ease of use. No need to fiddle with mixing when the chains sound gets it 95 percent of the way finished. Less work down the line.

Hi Iris! All of these are great. I currently own the Tegeler creme but I've used all of the these. Then the Neve MBC (I like neve on the front in during the vocal chain process). They all deliver the same quality as well. It's just a certain sound that I prefer. I hope this helps.

It's pretty much the same. C800G to Neve to CL1B or LA2A and/or 1176 is pretty much industry standard these days, assuming it suits the vocalist's voice. In other words, not everyone uses this chain, but it's a fairly common chain with most major Hip Hop artists.

As a longtime engineer I promise you I’ve heard platinum records tracked on a Rode NT1000 and trash tracked on a U-87. Best alternate condenser mics on a budget (imo): Any Warm Audio condenser clone, Rode K2 or NT1000 & 2000, Shure KSM32, AKG C214 or C314. Not a huge fan of AT mics but I’ve been testing some mics from Mojave and Avantone that are very solid!! The key is that unless you plan to open a major studio or you’re just an audiophile with a big budget it makes no sense to spend so much money on something like the Neumann U87 or a Sony C800g in today’s game. FUNDamentals before FUNDING rentals 🤙🏼

@@yvanm7999 Why would you switch it up after you master it? Are you just looking to expand your collection or what? I honestly feel like you gonna be disappointed by the TLM’s you named but I may be wrong. Also BeyerDynamics are industry standard headphones but it depends on the purpose. For mixing the DT 990 Pros (250Ω) are undefeated but you will most likely need a headphone amplifier if you get anything above 60Ω. For tracking/recording it doesn’t matter what you use as long as it’s closed back. If it’s for you and you only get the DT 240 Pro’s or DT 770 Pro (80Ω). If it’s headphones you letting other people use in your studio get something like LyxPro HAS-10 or the Sony MDR-7506 bcuz ppl not gon take care of your shit like you will lol.

This is great. You don't have to spend 20K to get a great vocal recording. I have a TLM 103 $1200 CDN and a UT 87 roughly $1200 CDN going into a $4000 UA 6176 channel strip. I also have a WA73-EQ Pre $1085.00 CDN and I have the 1176 Limiting Amplifier from the 6176 inserted into it. All said and done I've spent $7485 before tax on my vocal chain and I bet I could spend way less than half this amount and still get a great vocal recording. It's not the gear it's how you use it and capturing a great vocal take from a great singer or rapper.

What kind of vocal ranges you recording in the 103? I've had two and only got good results on female vocals or tenor pop males. Earlier today I prefered a commercial VO with a bass male on an AT mic than the 103 I have left. Maybe I'm not compressing enough?

I am saying this, to say its all about the song period. if you got a hit you can record it. on an iPhone and nothing else but garage band. the only time you need all that equipment, is when you dont have a hit. it only really matters is when the song is not a hit.
