Love the willingness to be a bit of an iconoclast. I really think you have a talent for explicating mechanical shortcomings and WHY they negatively impact the play experience. Always happy with your willingness to get into the nitty-gritty of a game's systems. This is indeed a great review for the reasons he mentioned. The other reviews I've seen didn't get into the nitty gritty. Some of the flaws you mentioned are indeed concerning to someone who just wants to play a shmup without any fluff. Oh well I'll probably still get it though since this was one of those PC exclusive shmups that I was really hoping would come to console.

I insta bought Drainus on Steam when it came out, because it shared so many similarities with our own Schildmaid MX and I was dead curious 😄 I love the presentation and with a sigh of relief I can say that it’s a very different game from the one we made, despite the shared sci-fi themes and central bullet absorbing shield mechanic.

Received my physical copy 3 days ago. As a 50 year old who has grown up playing all shmups genres and over the decades and aquired a huge collection on every systems, it takes a lot to get my attention nowadays. This game imo is far from Shmups that make you want to come back over and over again (either for a 1Cc, to beat your best score etc) And no arcade mode from the getgo!!WTF That alone, truly puts a big dent in its overall score. Also, keep in mind it's more of a boss-Shmup rather than a traditional "longer levels, with mid bosses and more interesting enemies variety/patterns shooter". The levels are short and easy, until you reach the bosses and their various forms. I've seen and played much worse recent Shmups. But expected a lot from this one. Even trying my best not to read/watch much gameplay footage, before I got my copy. Sure, there's worst indy rubbish out there, but it feels kinda flat. It has good visuals, tight gameplay, (soundtrack is crap imo), overall a game that could've been amazing, yet falls short in the fun department. Maybe with time I'll get to enjoy it more, who knows. Somehow I played more of my recent copy of Dinoforce on the Pc-Engine than this one. It's night and day of course, yet this previously unreleased prototype keeps me coming back for more and . 😅

Yeah, it stops you from being able to make changes during stages and does streamline things a bit, but you still have to buy stuff and equip it etc. Some games have like an auto function for these sorts of things where the game just uses your resources for you and gives you a standard set of upgrades. Means you can't personalise things the way you want but it saves you time faffing about. I think it would have been a good option to offer with this one.

I think I can explain it'd quirks; before hand, the devs mainly did metrovanias, so some of that might have bled into it. But in this regard it's a pretty first try into the genre. I think it's quirks endear it to people who want a bit of a change up in their games. I can also see it rubbing purists the wrong way. It'd be great if they improved the formula, perhaps going more towards the non conventional side of things.
@packpock436910 ай бұрын
It may have gotten some overrated attention but I think it definitely succeeds in trying to add some new twist. It has a different kind of design that's very appealing, there seems to be a lot going on most of the time on the screen. I feel like with difficulty every dev should give the player the setting to choose the difficulty. There are some shooter's that are way too easy, this does look in the middle ground. The parts you don't like well that's of course your opinion. Because they were making it more accessible because shooter's today have to be more accessible are people get turned off because it's to hard. Fans love variety but yes me personally I don't like have stop in the middle of a game and have to mess with upgrades. That's a big turn off probably the biggest one you mentioned. Everything else seems fine by far I don't agree with the score though considering the praise and attention. This game seems more like an 8/10, because it definitely brings a very attractive shooter that people will enjoy. The mechanics are very a nice touch and the designs are the best features here. But having to stop to upgrade brought the score down it is the biggest no no..

No hard and fast rules, but in general arcade shmups were originally designed around someone putting a coin in and playing till they die then either restarting or putting in another coin to continue. Operators also want people to play and move on quickly so they can get more money. That means in the 'arcade formula' stages follow on from one another quickly, and there's very little down time in general. They often feel harder, faster and more frantic to play. 'Console formula' shmups are more likely to have little cutscenes or story beats, unlockables, permanent upgrades or boosts, shop systems and customization options accessed through menus etc, and can take longer to play through or have moments where not as much is going on, as this is no problem for someone sitting in the comfort of their own home. That's all just very general though and lots of shmups will be a mix of both, and lots and lots of 'arcade formula' shmups that get released these days never actually appeared in an arcade and are only available on consoles / PC.
