Here's something to really piss people off but also make them confused: The Director chose to make this adaptation of an anime, despite the fact that he hates anime and knew nothing about Dragonball. Yeah, seriously. The Director wanted to make a movie about something that he hates, and he genuinely didn't care if it failed or not. So, when you think about it, all those points that Possum pointed out about wasting time and doing shit that made no sense, it was all on purpose.

Calling Piccolo "Pickle Rick" is doubly effective, because he is green and "Piccolo" sounds similar to "picke."

“He then buries him under rocks like he’s a pet or something, he even puts some decorative grass clippings on top” that made me laugh a little too hard.

In the source material the dragon balls get magically scattered randomly every time they're used. Literally anyone on earth could just accidentally stumble across one.

Okay, so I have a small story. I had heard of dragon ball in passing mention when I was younger and I could tell that it was popular. I had never seen it for myself and was curious to check it out sometime. So, one day while I was browsing TV, I saw this movie playing. Excited at my chance to see the thing I had heard so much hype about (I assumed that this movie was going to be at the same standard as the main series) I sat down and watched the whole thing. For a whole year (until I forgot about it entirely) I assumed that Dragon Ball fans were stupid people with extremely low standards. Now, after watching the ACTUAL SERIES, I can say that this movie is simply a dark spot in an otherwise good anime series.

As its own it movie, it fails; as a Dragon Ball movie, it fails even harder.

A couple things I wanna say about this. Though I didn't like the movie either, I wanted to mention some things in this review. -You forgot how Master Roshi and Yamcha also look nothing like they supposed to. Master Roshi in the show was supposed to be bald, have a long beard, a hunched back, and he almost all the time wore sunglasses. He also wore a turtle shell on his back. Though he DID teach Goku the Kamehameha. Yamcha also had black hair and was a lot more kung-fu capable too. Seriously couldn't they have made costumes for those? -In the show, Gohan, the grandpa, was already dead when Goku was that age, but he did his best to honor him and remember him and become independent. The 4-star ball was the one his grandpa gave him, and he always liked that one the most because of it. He once got to see him in ghost form thanks to this one necromancer witch. Also later on, he would name his first born son, Gohan, in honor of him. -Bulma in the original show, though she was a scientist with space-defying capsule technology, did not have good fighting skills, and often times would cower while the others would save her. Also when Goku first met her, he actually never saw a girl before in his entire life, due to how long he had lived in isolation with only his grandpa. Neither was Chi-Chi ever a fighter as far as I know, Chi-Chi was always shown to be the insufferable crazy mom type. -20:49 As shown in the show and the movie, every time the Dragonballs are brought together and someone makes a wish, the Dragonballs scatter across the world again. I don't like this movie, but with how they scatter, it makes sense that one of them could've landed in the lake after they were used before. -Piccolo's powers in the show mainly included flying, regenerating lost limbs, super hearing, being able to permanently absorb dying members of his kind (a technique forbidden on his world), and his ultimate attack, the "Special Beam Cannon" (yeah that literally was what the attack was called). I don't recall him ever being able to telekinetically crush things or form monsters out of his blood though. For a while he was trapped in an ancient jar though. Oh and in the show, later Piccolo becomes a good guy. -36:15 Oozaru form was something in the show, but it only happens when Goku directly looks at any Full Moon, not just a blood moon (and the show explains it due to Blutz Waves coming from it react to glands in his tail). It was something he used a few times in the original series, sometimes even to his own benefit, despite losing all control and being like The Hulk in that state. Also others of his kind could do it too (Vegeta and Gohan used that ability once too), and they permanently lose said Oozaru power if their tail gets cut off. Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan lose the ability to ever go Oozaru ever again after they got their tails chopped off in the show. -36:23 And in the show, yes Goku is really a human/ape super alien whom was adopted by Gohan. Though back on his planet before Frieza destroyed it, they all referred to him as "Kakarot." Heck that's what Vegeta, Raditz, and Paragus still call him. The show at least built up to it better though. They also have powers like Energy Blasts, a Super Form (the iconic gold hair and super strength), and being able to become stronger if not killed right then and there. -37:27 I've seen characters in DBZ survive even more than that. Like Goku in his Super Saiyan form was once in the show able to survive a mountain-shattering energy blast from Frieza. That was nothing. -40:00 You think that was too crazy? Gigantic Energy Blast Moves that are crazy over the top is like a STAPLE of DBZ. Heck, one of the main villains, Frieza, was shown to be capable of shooting an energy ball strong enough to obliterate an entire planet! And then we had villains like Majin Buu, whom in his final form could fire enough homing comets to wipe out 99% of the human race just like that! What Goku did in that scene pales to what happens on a typical basis in DBZ. -40:22 Using the Dragonballs to bring people back to life is what they end up being used for 80% of the time in the show.

@@TheSefirosu200x We all know that this movie isn't based on DBZ. But it's obvious that DBZ was far more popular in the US and other countries than Dragonball was. DBZ is why this movie was made, not Dragonball. They started out with this hoping that they would make more movies that would be closer to DBZ. Like the fact that they wanted to set up Vegeta. Yes, this movie has nothing to do with Dragonball but it was the chance that if it was a hit(lmao) that they would use DBZ material for other movies.

Wanna hear a really weird fun fact?: In Spain, "Chi chi" it's slang for "vagina", and in Latino-america, it's slang for "boobs".... many people complained that Black Widow was allways hyper-sexualized in the MCU, but this cartoon lady was a central stone of many kids education, a whole generation of spanish talkers of half of the world which had the WEIRDEST sexual awakening in history..... Best critique I've seen of this movie, ever, to be quite honest. Also, he doesn't have antennae even though Star Trek Enterprise proved you could do "moving antenna makeup" years ago with its Andorians. And Piccolo's don't even have to move that much, especially if he wore his damn turban. But, oh wait, I guess he can't get a turban because he doesn't have his CLOTHES BEAM which is absolutely vital to his character and, without it, can he even really be called Piccolo?

I have the funniest .Emory of this in theaters for so eone who never saw it in theaters. When it was out, I went to the theater to see a different movie, and saw people in full Goku costume entering it. They were chanting, yelling and so excited and I was happy for them. Then, when my movie ended me and my friend left and saw those same people in the lobby after their movie, yelling and crying, their whole mood was flipped. I didn't see Evolution until years later and then I finally understood.

He doesn't even mention that Master Roshi in this film looks absolutely nothing like he is supposed to. Where's his beard, baldness, hunched back, and sunglasses?

Actually in the manga and anime it's called Kamehameha wave because Kame means "Turtle", Roshi developed the technique and called the Turtle Wave Strike because surprise surprise he's "The Turtle Hermit" and lives on an island at Kame House which is Turtle House, and has a Turtle companion.
