Every time they randomly flip the screen, your own muscle memory from the last time you played that scene starts working *against* you. It's *so* evil. At least in the sequel, they didn't randomise the sequence. Not out of kindness to the players, of course, it just turned out that all the random scene-loading was way too hard on the machine's Laserdisc player and wore the head mechanism out really fast.

They got super into it, which sort of made the episode for me. There's not much in the way of the entertaining improv or insightful commentary, but their reactions are just so genuine that you can imagine it all being said in an 80's arcade.

I like how Princess Daphne is basically the game's boss. She's *entirely* designed to distract you, making the end segment much harder than it otherwise would have been.

I remember this game in the arcades, they would have a second screen on top of the machine and people would gather around to watch. Seeing someone beat the game was a rare sight.

and this was out in 1983 too advanced, man (except for all the QTE fest from the start to finish, but even QTE could count for being ages ahead of the others)

For those who are wondering just who that castle belonged to, there actually is a little backstory to it. The castle actually belonged to the evil wizard Mordrok, who imprisoned Daphne and had his pet dragon, whose name was Singe, guarding her. Mordrok eventually became the main villain in Dragons Lair 2: Time Warp. Which is why the first level was Dirk going back to the original castle while escaping his mother-in-law.

It's not as hard as you think. What errands doing is mimicking how the the actress for Daphne pronounce the words and he's also matching the general tone. Like as a and I hate to use this as terms of raise but like as a white northern guy, I can talk like Eddie Murphy by doing the exact same thing. learn how somebody forms the words and then try to match the pitch and just general tone even if it has to be an octave higher to lower and you can do almost any accent, male or female.

LoveMyUnusual apparently, the voices were done by the animators so as to keep costs down. Vera was in charge of the “clean up” department, and she’s worked on several big Disney projects. Also, and I’m sure Dan will get a kick out of this, Daphne’s design was inspired by photos taken from Playboy. I am not kidding!

I somehow managed to beat dragons lair 2 time warp on the windows 95 release and yup as soon as you save Daphne the game just ends.

Next ten minute power hour, Dan and Arin actually have to save a princess from a cave for talking all that shit

They kinda had a Mass Effect like quality but if it was JUST the Normandy crew and a choose you're own adventure. That includes tailoring your character and her choices to your liking. I mention it cause I only finally played the ME trilogy recently and noticed the similarity.

It's insane when you realize how influential Dragon's Lair is for modern games of today. Insane ahead-of-their-time graphics, absurd brutality/gore(not actual gore, but the ways Dirk dies go from hilarious to horrifying), the "save the princess" theme was pretty common for these games but it was really cranked up to 11 with how *sexy* Daphne is (well-endowed game honeys being a trend itself), THE ENTIRE THING is QTEs, it has a mechanic that constantly shifts events which makes for a unique playthrough every time. I mean... God Damn. Just think about this and those playable movie games like Detroit: Become Human, and really, what is the difference. Dirk and Connor (any pretty much anyone else, but mostly Connor) can die a million brutal ways just from you fucking up QTEs, and the animation is amazing.

@@michaelboydston313 Mocap is literally anything but lazy. If you truly believe that, then you really need to look up the behind-the-scenes footage of Devil May Cry 3. Not only was it mocapped, but even now, it's some of the most fluid 3D animation out there.

Dan said $0.50, but for me (Dragon's Lair 2) was $0.75. Fun but definitely limited!!

The original had no assist guide graphic to tell you what to press, when. Channel surfing to form coherent sentences and form a plot would be easier.

Don Bluth created this and he also did animation for Anastasia, all dogs fo to heaven, American tail, secret of Nymph, Land before time!

Sean Birch secret of nimh-came out in the 80s based on a children’s novel I believe. Well worth a watch it’s a fantastic film

Actually this was produced by Don Bluth, who took credit for someone else’s work. There’s a video called something like “who really made dragon’s lair?” That explains it better than I could.

Imagine playing this on the computer like my family used to- there's no arrow pad indicator on the screen, you can only listen for the sound cues and hope you're in a scenario where the path lights up xD

No hesitation when Arin asks if he Dan wants to see some princess Daphne cosplay. I love it.

"Dayan" got so close to my name I got excited. Lmao all those years getting my name misspelled worse made this episode that much better lmfao

By my count, not counting the reset at the beginning of the game, they died a total of 78 times. Apparently, it was 50c per play on the original arcade version, so if the original was: -5 lives per credit, they played 16 credits + 1 reset, for $8.50. -3 lives per credit, they played 27 credits + 1 reset, for $14.

You don't need to look it up. Modern versions of the game like the one they played here include a movie mode where you can just watch a full, clean playthrough of the game.

Anyone else notice his score was 46920? It's a 69 in the middle of a 420. *crawls back to the Land of Unfunny Jokes

Fun fact: there’s a sequel and it usually takes Don Bluth, the director and animator of Dragons lair about 10 minutes to complete dragons lair

This game has 22 minutes of animation and cost 1.3 million to make.

The part with the marbles where they make it different colors is so ahead of its time. They did that so you know/can tell you’re in a different scene/part. Games now a days still sometimes forget to do things like that.

I wasted a lot of quarters at the arcades trying to get good at this game... I only ever got 3 steps into it before dying. Thanks for this, I finally got to see the rest of the game!!!

The animator for this game also made many classics like Anastasia, The Land before time, and more.

I like to imagine that Dirk’s trying to house flip this old Lair and the whole game is him trying to fix it up and quickly realizing he made a terrible investment.

I was going to say that if I was Don Bluth I would have reverse versions of all the scenes to trip the player up even harder.....but he does that. Fair play you quarter crunching monster.

Now they should play Space Ace.

Yes.. don bluth did so much amazing stuff.. he actually started at Disneyland with sleeping beauty and Cinderella.. he did all dogs go to heaven, land before time.. sword in the stone... Titan ae.. just so so much awesome material

25:35 I know what Arin means. The arcade is actually harder because it only flashes to rooms or items vaguely in the four directions to give a clue of what’s next. This game still maintains some of those flashes.

I loved this one. The animation is so swift,not even a swiffer could pick up where it leaves off. XD good job guys.

Vanilla Milkshake Land Before Time was MY TAPE to play as a kid! I wore out the cardboard box for it! I recently showed it to my nephew and nieces (ages 5-10) and they loved it! I was so happy for them!
