Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Review - An Underrated RPG That Deserves a Sequel

Ойындар

Dragon's Dogma has remained one of my favorite games of all time since I played the original back in 2012. I have played it many times over the years, and finally decided it was time that I properly reviewed it and pondered exactly what it is about the game that makes it so endearing and special to me. I believe that there is so much potential within Dragon's Dogma's heart, and I hope dearly that we will one day see a sequel.
This review is of the Steam port of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. There are some mods installed that improve the look of the game, remove the Arisen's scar in some cutscenes, and adds Japanese voices.

I remember one of the most epic moments was playing this game. It was that spiral dungeon part of the early story line that later open into the huge rift in the end game. I came across a ogre and mounted it. My team began attacking it until it was pushed off the stairs while I was still on top of it! We fell like 40 feet and it instantly died where as I lived still on top of its corpse. Felt so cinematic.

Having recently picked this game up on Switch, and it being my first action rpg like this, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed myself. So much in fact that after hitting lv 200 and defeating Daimon's second form, I restarted and am now on my second playthrough with slightly visually updated versions of my Arisen and Pawn, though with myself as a Mystic Knight Rather than a Magick Archer. And, of course, looking up videos about this game on KZread. That's how I found yours and thoroughly enjoyed it as well, allthough you must forgive me for not instantly replaying it like the game itself. One thing i did notice was trouble damaging some bbi enemies, let alone daimon phase 2, even though I was level 200. I suppose I just didn't get too lucky with bbi tier 3 weapon drops. So I went in wuth a fully upgraded magick bow (the one you get for killing Grigori) and had to spam magick stat boosters x4 and Large Mushrooms in order to spam ninefold bolt through the entire thing. Perhaps it was due to playing as a Strider until somewhere between levels 30 and 50 and then sticking with Magick Archer through the rest of the game. I didn't quite know what I was doing, still don't fully to be honest. I simply prefer sticking as one class for most of the game, aka i switched to MK as soon as I could this time, thus missing out on augments from other classes or optimal stat gain. The little bit of Mage I tried near the end of my first playthrough just wasn't that fun. I found some spells difficult to aim and they barely did anything. Now I am not exactly great at games due to some hand eye coordination struggles so that probably also factors in. Probably why I enjoyed MA so much tbh, as the magick bow has a pretty generous auto lock on, requiring less precission from my end, as well as being able to pause and spam heals/stamina/stat boosts a lot XD. And near the end I did switch from easy mode to normal mode and then hard mode, on which i beat the second phase of bbi. My second playthrough i went to hard mode immediately and am hoping playing almost exclusively as Mystic Knight, Fighter until Gran Soren, will have me fare better in BBI this time, though even now as im about to go after Salomet for stealing the ring I sometimes struggle dealing much damage to larger enemies with non fire enchant boosted Great Cannon attack. The basic one just seems to do very little, and even the enchanted ones can struggle, so I mainly rely on pgysical attacks. I know Mage and Sorcerer play through the levels is best for magic stat, but I'm realy hoping MK will be decent enough to get me through the endgame again maybe with less necessity for boosted magic because I'd deal no damage otherwise. All in all, loving the game, loved the video, if I hadn't bought it already I'm sure this would've sold me on it. Hopefully it finds more people and thus the game more players. I really hope we get a sequel, maybe even explore the other kingdoms/provinces/lands or at least one of them. Hopefull the combat isn't changed too much either. It'd be awesome to see though. Thanks to anyone who actually read this entire thing, or at least skimming to the end ;)

I read the full thing, it's a great write up and it's always fun to hear other peoples experience with this game and take a ways. I know I'm a bit late to responding but don't feel too bad about not doing a lot of damage to Daimon's second form, it's notorious for having incredibly high magic resistance on top of resistances to all elements except holy. 80% of your damage ultimately comes from your weapon itself and the augments you slot in like ones that give 10% & 20% extra damage to magic/melee. Leveling slightly as a Strider wouldn't have cut into your DPS that hard and ultimately it's all meaningless if your gear is good enough. Magick Archer and Magick Knight do split damage, half melee half magic, so it's important you utilize elemental weapons as their the vocation that benefits from them then make sure it syncs up with the enemies elemental weakness. Magick Knight can take advantage of elemental weakness with his shield as his riposte skills are some of his best DPS moves outside of cannon.

Still relied on +4 offense boosts in playthroughs 2 (Mystic Knight) and 3 (Assassin) plus hundreds of blast arrows lmao. I occasionally google elemental weaknesses if I struggle. The MMO (Dragon’s Dogma Online) expanded the character creation, experimented with some new vocations (while refining some older ones playstyles), and created a functioning co-op system. It wasn’t (easily) accessible outside of Japan, but all the new things they tried out in DDON (which really pushed it’s engine) means DD2 hopefully should have a lot of features to be excited for. (Not to mention the overall art and music were amazing.)

Great review. As far as the NPC romance goes... There's affection levels you build up w/ each NPC (it can go positive or negative). Once you reach max positive affection, there'll be like a bell chime sound when you speak to them. The person you end up romantically linked to is whoever you have the highest affection with. But...if you have multiple NPCs at max affection, then who is chosen ends up being based on whichever max affection NPC you spoke to last before the event where it is locked in. You can make sure you get the right person by talking to that person last before setting out near the end....or intentionally lower affection w/ others at max (attacking or picking them up lowers it but can get you jailed. I usually just draw and sheathe my weapon next to them, or run and bump into them, those are legal). The Arisen's Bond just automatically puts someone to max affinity (I think...or just a huge boost that nearly guarantees instant max affinity), nothing more. If you have other NPCs there, they can still be your romance option if you talk to them last after any other contenders. And the bond isn't needed at all to romance a given NPC. Just talking to them a lot can do it... *SPOILER* The one who finds your pawn on the beach at the very end is still your beloved. But in between facing the Dragon and the Seneschal, who that person is can change, as per the above.

As far as I’m aware, The Duke never bested a dragon. He’s still immortal in terms of age, until you kill Gregori and then he immediately starts ageing again. This is because Gregori offered him a deal. The Duke going mad reinforces this idea, that The Duke was given riches and romance in favour of not challenging the dragon. Lenor was his romance and his royalty his riches, He outlived Lenor and in turn married someone young in her stead. In his maddening he strangles Eleanor out of regret.

I also know there can be only one Arisen at a time in one universe and it isn't The Duke. I think assuming there can be only one immortal might be where I'm wrong, though. Unless in the cycle entirely, There's always one immortal Seneschal, one immortal Sovereign and one immortal Arisen. Suppose we'll find out in Dragon's Dogma 2 whether or not there are Sovereigns who aren't there because they accepted a dragon's deal.

A compromise then: lock the eternal ferrystone and keep consumable ferrystone drops low until ng+, but keep the portcrystals as is. The final nod from your pawn at you always gets me. It made me realize how screwed your character is from the beginning, being destined to be a mere cog in the machine, even when you attempted to end the cycle by killing yourself, it didn't mattered. Arisen may be individuals of great valor and strength, but they are denied the very thing they are a paragon of: A life. Sucks for the beloved too, they end up with a fake you, to live ever after, except Quina that recognizes the true, and tries to be positive you'll return, but no, you ded, ded. You might have ended the cycle in your world, ,but what of all the other from the multiverse the rift connects? A true endless cycle indeed. (I always loved that 4th wall break that makes each world of an Arisen, a plyer who has the game. So literally there's as much universes as players :V) I don't think there are many games where your character is effectively doomed from the very start and the true ending is a bad ending.

My theory is this: SPOILERS AHEAD!! Your physical form dies, true, but your Pawn is an empty vessel, with no soul but the one you give her/him. Given that the Fool basically IS the Dragonforged and that all Pawns effectively become the Arisen they serve through the Bestowal of Spirit, all you're really doing is pouring yourself into another vessel that will effectively BECOME you in all the ways that matter. Fate isn't changed, exactly, just as the Arisen is exactly dead; fate is altered enough that the dogma won't hold the world hostage for "countless lifetimes" that come to pass.

There's one really cool feature that heavily impacts the story on every New Game+, and it's one of my favorite elements of the game. Warning, massive spoilers! ... The identity of the Seneschal changes every New Game+, to that of the last Arisen you beat the game with. Their face, voice, weapons - it isn't always that same knight from the tutorial, it's now your own mage or ranger that you built with your own hands, and lovingly crafted and played for hours and hours. It's an amazing stylistic choice, and nothing really makes the tragic endlessness of the world hit as hard as the fact that you always end up seeing your own character as the final boss.

One thing I'd love to see in the sequel would be more granular pawn controls as an option you can (but don't have to) use. So, the basic would remain as is - F1, F2 and F3 buttons for very simple, broad commands, and that'd be the default. But if you enable it (either through menu options, or perhaps more immersively via in-game means, like equipping a "commander's insignia" ring or something), that enables far more complex controls, similar-ish to Mount & Blade - you'd control each pawn separately and could give specific orders (i.e: pawn1 -> climb the target, pawn2 -> protect me, pawn3 -> act at will etc.). So players used to the DD1 simple system could still use it without bothering with specific commands, but those who want to play more tactically could use the more complex order set.

It should be noted that this was a new ip from Capcom, and as such Capcom wasn't willing to fully fund the game nor would they allow much time in its development. Its been said that Capcom allotted a meager budget and then reduced it. Capcom likewise set a development time, and then shortened it. So if the game feels like cuts were made, its because there were. The game did have designs that never made it into the game, and a number of features were made in haste or cut. Supposedly, there was supposed to be another region, but it had to be cut due to lack of budget & no time. Really sad, as this game (as good as it is) could have been so much better if Capcom just allowed the Devs to do what they wanted and gave them full funding and extra time. As it was, Capcom reduced their budget and shortened development time, which is why many of the flaws exist.

This is the one game where I feel like a hipster since I liked it before it was cool lol. But seriously I remember when I first saw gameplay of this during e3 2011(?), the fact that it was not only an open world action rpg but a party based one was the biggest hook for me personally. Games like the Witcher have so many different monsters, towns, amazing side quests, but you are all alone, sure there’s reason for that, but having a party of skilled but not overpowered members in a dangerous world is what I love for. Then I downloaded the griffon fight demo on 360 and adored the character creator and combat (easily the game’s strongest point). My first play through was a mess but subsequent play thoughts were where my love for this world’s lore grew, then dark arisen came out which was amazing in expanding the dark lore. If this game gets a sequel that improves on all it’s good points I will go bananas, honestly the biggest flaw for me are the factions/side quests and how though interesting never go anywhere or reach their full potential, I wanted to know more about Salvation, or why there was no moon in the game, I wanted to visit the kingdom of Hearthstone to bring more assistance to the Wyrm hunt, I feel like Itsuno’s vision was never fully reached in the original release, so a sequel with an improved engine and actual budget should be an unrivaled masterpiece. That said a lot of things can be improved and some QoL updates are needed, not just world building, but I have faith that they will improve upon the great albeit archaic systems. (If they do decide to add online multiplayer I pray it doesn’t negatively affect the campaign or pawns, the pawns were the initial selling point for me, derpy as they were) anyhoo, I will shut up now lol. Awesome video, I love this game.

Every decision impacts something. Awesome game, can be challenging but is quite rewarding. Worth playing in 2021.
