I wish Pokémon did this, would love to see new games in an old school style

Not weird at all. Just bought the game on steam while it's on sale specifically for the 2D. I love the old school looks, gives me breath of fire/golden sun vibes.

This is the kind of comparison I was looking for! I'd love to see what each scene looks like in each dimension simultaneously XD

yeah based on that 1st section, the 2d seems more condensed. But it's nice to get free content in this edition.

In a nutshell, 2D is fast-paced, while 3D is immersive. • 2D mode is presented with stereo sound. 3D mode is presented with surround sound. • In 2D mode, the Story So Far screen is plain text against a semitransparent background. In 3D mode, it’s outlined and shadowed white text against a sepia-toned image and gold bars on top and bottom. • In 2D mode, battles occur via random encounters. In 3D mode, battles occur by contacting or attacking in the enemy in the field. Doing the latter damages the enemies before the battle is triggered. • Speaking of the Zoom spell: In 2D mode, you can fast travel only to major locations, such as towns and villages. In 3D mode, you can fast travel to any place that the Hero can pray (that means, anywhere you can save the game). However, this difference is negligible. • If you come a come a cropper (or get Wiped Out) in 3D mode, you have three options. Option #1 has you return to the place where the Hero last prayed (or where you last saved the game). Option #2 has you return to the last major location the party visited. Option #3 has you return to where the game last autosaved. If you choose option #1 or 2, you will lose half of the gold coins on your person, but everything else you accumulated thus far will remain as is. If you choose option #3, you will lose everything you accumulated since the game last autosaved, but everything else will remain as is. If you come a cropper in 2D mode, option #1 is the only option, as it is in early Dragon Quest titles. In either mode, any gold coins deposited in Rainbow’s End Bank will stay there safe and sound. If you get wiped out by the Black Dragon in Helidor Castle’s dungeon, you won’t lose any gold coins on your person. • In 2D mode, the day-and-night cycle uses a fixed palette for dawn, day, dusk, and night. In 3D mode, the day-and-night cycle is gradual. • The Fun Size Forge is more precise in 3D mode.

New Game Rush I’ve been playing the game in both 3D mode and 2D mode. I have a separate save file for each. My 3D save file was started in the demo. Also, unlike 3D mode, there’s no autosave in 2D mode.

In 2D mode, the Crackshot Crossbow starts a random encounter immediately; whereas in 3D mode, it provokes an enemy to charge towards you.

New Game Rush Another thing I forgot is: • When you start a new playthrough in 3D mode, you’ll be prompted to set the system settings like camera options and brightness, as well as voice language, before going to the FMV introduction, which leads you to the game. When you start a new playthrough in 2D mode, you’ll go straight to the FMV introduction, but with subtitles instead of voice acting. • The dialogue box is wider by the way of text room in 2D mode. In 2D font size and format is the same in all aspects in the game, and there’s no outline or shadow on the font. In 3D mode, there are various font sizes and attributes throughout the game, and may feature outline and/or shadow. • For the Quests (or errands), 3D mode uses a purple speech bubble to pinpoint whom to talk to about it. This is seen only on the map in 2D mode. It’s mentioned in the “Completed” description of Quest #1. When you complete a Quest, you’ll hear a woodwind based jingle. The difference is that the rubber stamp effect is exclusive to 3D mode. • Unlike in 3D mode, horses are useless in 2D mode. Unlike Chocobos in the Final Fantasy series, they don’t increase movement speed or prevent random encounters in 2D mode. • 3D mode has loading time, and tips are shown on the loading screen. It also has autosave. There’s no loading time or autosave in 2D mode. • The Quick Commands menu is exclusive to 3D mode. • Info command is in the main menu in 2D mode. It’s under the Misc. menu in 3D mode. Therefore, you check the info quicker in 2D mode.

I kind of wish the movie for 2d were in 8-bit.

I think it would make for a better experience to play in 2D first. Kind of like playing a remake. To actualize the story in all its glory and wonder! 😮

Love the concept, wish you could see the characters taking by a swing in 2D but I’m sold as is!

Amazing both modes.

There could be Dragon Quest XI S: UE5 and HD-2D Edition for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Steam. That is, Unreal Engine 5 3D mode (similar to the pre-rendered content) and Octopath style mode (HD-2D mode in the style of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake). Unreal Engine 5 will basically be based on the original 3D mode, with Tickington also being in 3D. HD-2D mode would feature the high-res battle concept artwork imposed on an Unreal Engine 4 rendition of the 2D battle backgrounds. The original 2D mode would also be included as well, but with the option of high-res battle graphics.

2D was made for old schools players and 3D for modern players i reccomend play both in a new game

is it weird that I was completely uninterested in this game until I learned that you can play the entire thing in 2D? Now I'm sad I didn't buy it when it was on sale :P

You should get it. I've had it since it came out and there's just so much to do and that has happened.. plus the 2d is rad..

Nice, that's what I plan to do after my first play through. Let me know how long it takes it beat the game in 2D.

What if other JRPG franchises follow the dual presentation concept of Dragon Quest XI? Maybe a Tales game might do it, such as 3D mode based on Tales of Arise and 2D mode based on Tales of Destiny.

Holy Crap! The English voices are TERRIBLE, Sandra sounds so wrong. But I'm playing in german dont know if her name is different. The local girl from town 1.
