They changed the Boss Trolls design to having green lips in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince as well. Honestly I can understand them wanting to change it a bit, (like have you guys seen the normal Troll design? He’s literally brown with big pink/red lips).
If you asked me out of the blue "Do you want to play a remake of Dragon Quest III?" I'd probably not be super interested. But it looks like they've really implemented a ton of modernizations, improvements, and new gameplay features to make it a fresh experience. I'm surprised they even have voice acting, never would have expected that! Seems like an impressive package overall. I'm definitely interested now. I hope they similarly address the traditionally restrictive inventory system though. When Damiani talked about the cool real-time lighting effects while using a torch in a dark dungeon, it made me think about having to carry a bunch of consumable "Torch" items in my limited bag space, hoping I had enough for the trip.

In early Dragon Quest games, the battles were placed in a seperate screen from the world, isolating off the enemies to show off their attractive designs, it was a clean design that helped to streamline the game. I personally have a fondness for it myself and I don’t think it’d take too much for a new player to get used to. A part of the appeal of DQ battles has always been the delightfully whimsical animations of the enemies rather than your own party. DQ3 in particular, I assume you might not know so I’ll just say it like this, places less emphasis on the party members besides the main player character anyways. It’s a jolly ol’ time

And why are we just ignoring Enix having a lower marketing budget for the Western markets compared to Square? Or hey, how about Square skipping over some games to get the new one out in the West as soon as possible, making them look more shiny and new compared to DQ which would take their time localising their games, which would look outdated by the time they eventually released. But nah, the combat is first person. That's why. There are a lot of reasons why FF has routinely outsold DQ in the West, but the first person combat is _not_ one of them. I think it’s a balance, projects like this, Star Ocean 2 and Live a Live probably don’t get green lit for the amount it’d cost them to put together a full 3D make over nice enough to both satisfy fans as well as be worth it. Because 2D-HD happened to both generate positive reception from fans early on as well as provide them with a cheaper option to remake those games, it’s become the most feasible route to allow for these. I get that a lot of the early charm/appeal’s fallen off now, some might say they never liked this style in the first place, but I still think they can come out looking great to fine and as an RPG fan, I’m happy to see some of these older franchises get kept alive.
