Tbf, this was the 80s (I think? There was so many games mentioned in this video that I'm confused now xD), and anime wasn't the global phenomenon that is today. Yes, there were some anime series that were relatively successful in the western world, but most of them were a super niche thing at the time, so you can't fault them for not wanting to release these games outside of Japan.

They're a relic of a 56k modem era. I scanned the manga into black amd white line art in order to minimize the file size to under 1 MB a chapter. That meant you could read it without having to wait 10 min between chapters. Who would have though back then that we'd be almost overwhelmed with Dragon Ball media in North America today? It warms my heart that my other project, Fist of the North Star, is not only relatively well known now but even has an awesome PS4 Yakuza-esque game to its name localized here. Sadly, time has not been so kind to Rurouni Kenshin as a result of its author's deplorable actions. But at least I know that fand today have such a wonderful breadth of anime and manga options available to them.

@@DidYouKnowGamin As did seeing DBZ Legends on Playstation/Sega Saturn. It was my go to game at a local anime shop in the 90s and was the first time I was really exposed to characters from throughout the entire series (the French manga was only to about the Freeza saga at that point). It was repetitive and the characters all played the same, but getting that tug-of-war all the way to the end and seeing those badass meteor specials was still a joy to behold.

You forgot to mention that "Shenron no Nazo" DID have a western release in France (thanks to the collaboration between France and Japan). Since the anime was popular in my country, an NES version of that game was released exclusively here (same as Saint Seiya's first game on the NES). However (and I can attest to that, since I've played it back when I was a kid), it was censored and badly translated.

In Spain, we also have those NES and SNES Dragon Ball games because, as in France, Dragon Ball was very popular since 1991. In fact, here was the first western country to publish the manga. Unfortunately, the videogame market here was very small during the 90s, so most of these games were released in French or English. I remember, as a kid playing the french version of Super Butoden 2 in SNES. I was unable to understand a single word of the story, but I already know all that happened by memory thanks to the manga, anime, and movies.

Between Dragon Ball and Gundam, I quickly learned techniques in a more rapid pace than I would using mainstays such as Sonic Advance, Mario & Luigi, or any other popular spriting style at the time, with Metal Slug not too far behind DB and Gundam in terms of fluid animation.

I remember a game mode in 22 that had you level up after taking out enemies. You'd start with the weakest fighters and climb a sort of ladder up the roster. Loved that. I also remember a code that added fighters to the roster, including more than one fusion of Goku and Vegeta, but I don't remember the code itself nor the final roster count. UB22 may not have done well in the west, but I know I loved it.

Born in 1981, I always saw Dragon Ball stuff growing up and had no idea why this not-very-popular thing just KEPT sticking around when nobody seemed to care. There was the NES game that had it's name changed to Dragon Power, the tease of a sequel in Nintendo Power, and then a constant stream of pictures of Dragon Ball videogames in Gamepro magazine over the years until, ultimately, one finally got released on the Playstation. While most people never experienced Dragon Ball until Toonami and Cartoon Network, it was a consistent presence in gaming before then. It was just a weird thing that took up space in magazines that nobody paid any attention to.

You know, while Dragon Ball sold less than One Piece, it should be noted that many people in the West ended up finishing watching the series before the manga was even available and the subs and manga were read by people before it was even available. It was considered old in the West by the time we had decent options. Plus, it has less chapters and a drastically shorter anime with only half actually being shown and the other half being a prequel (in the West). And yet even with all those disadvantages, it still has second place. And it has the most famous (and original) abridged series.

I mean Yamcha's death pose was memed but that one wasn't nearly as important beyond that. Also he's tied for second most deaths, and there's plenty of characters who only died once (I mean literally everyone died/got wiped out of existence at least once, especially if you count alternate timelines like when Zeno destroyed Future Trunks' version of Universe 7 to kill Zamasu meaning that every universe in Dragon Ball canon has been wiped once now) which just makes what you said _entirely_ bullshit.

22:16 extra fun fact about this series, there is a fan game called Dragon Ball Devolution that uses these sprites as a basis for all it's characters, and because of it's simple style, it Devolution has a roster of 273 (more so 240-250 excluding variants) characters from the entire series, about 112 (140-150 or so excluding variants from both [I ain't counting individually]) more than Tenkaichi 3. I only bring this up because the game runs on Flash, and is not gonna be playable at the end of the year (unless they update it to run on another engine) and it's honestly a really fun game, made even better by it being so simple, so I just wanted to give it some love before it potentially becomes unplayable.
