I've proposed some wagers regarding the commercial performance of this game and the future of BioWare to people who are either on copium or just dumbasses with no standards... have yet to be taken up on that. But this will come to be known on the internet as *Dragon Age: The Failguard* (much like what happened with the XBONE launch -- no focus groups were involved in the naming decision, clearly, as making fun of it is like picking low-hanging fruit) and *BioWare will most likely not survive until 2025* -- this, if/when it fails, will be the studio's 3rd consecutive strike and they're gonna be out.

I LOVED the first Dragon Age. Loved the combat even though it was clunky, especially the skill combinations that you were not told about, but figured them out on your own (you trip a frozen character, they shatter giving you an insta-kill), the importance of positioning and that you could program your companions to use certain skills in certain situations. I loved the design and overall feel of the game, which was very real when it came to humanoids, their weapons, armors and cities. I loved the characters, both companions and NPCs. Sadly with every future iteration the games are getting further and further away from what that original game. Looking at the Fortnite looking, joke-filled, over the top trailer for Veilguard makes me wonder how the fuck are they even the same franchise. Or in other words, you show me the trailer and make me guess what game they are for, I would not get it right (if you cut out the one recognizable character).

I love voiced protagonist, but it depends of the voice. Playing as an dragon, but having an british accent kill the immersion of it. Admittedly, Joss Whedon was the only writer who could balance the quirky characters delivering one-liners with at least taking situatons seriously when needed. Everyone who came after never balanced it right so you end up with "Le quirky" psychopaths and stories where death has zero weight. I don't want to see my "heroes" smiling and cracking jokes after they've just killed dozens of people. But that's why modern writing just seems like bad fan fiction. The writers structure a theme or mood around trying to force you, the viewer, to like their OCs, and their actions in the story don't reflect how the writer treats them. You get psychopathic heroes, cartoonishly evil villains who you wonder how they gained any prominence being so directly evil, or villains who are forgiven for any amount of wrongdoing because they're just misunderstood and had traumatic pasts.

You're so funny. Neve is a detective, and her design is based on 1930s womens' fashion, aka the golden age of detective fiction, mashed with their already established Tevinter fashion and aesthetics which are centered around snakes and snake/dragon imagery. Just because you don't understand design it doesn't mean it's bad.

I think, just watching your video here, like... introducing characters in such a manner feels like they're trying to one-up Baldur's Gate, and Baldur's Gate didn't even do any of that. DA has always let the characters you discover in the story speak for itself, same thing Baldur's Gate did. The Marvel point is on point too though. I dunno, like, there's no worldbuilding happening in the trailer. I don't want to see characters, I wanna see the world I'm gonna be playing in, lore stuff, all that. Gameplay is just... eh, it seems like. I'd rather be given a full, fleshed out storyline instead of this tbh. I don't think this game is gonna pan out for EA and it's entirely their fault after the success of BG3. Also the Pride demon looks like absolute crap. There better be a story reason for a lot of these visuals, cause that's a HUGE design change to a bunch of monsters.

But I also think that Dragon Age is in a bad state and that the criticisms made are not illegitimate. The people who bought Inquisition in 2014 did so in a very particular context. Da: Inquisition was released at a time without competition (just before The Witcher III) with the PS4 lacking games, in a genre like the RPG which was no longer really represented. I think that today, Veilguard is in a much worse position because not only is the RPG genre benefiting from a renewed interest, but Veilguard is moving further away from it. Through its gameplay choices and its narrative, Veilguard is now in a very competitive setting with other action-adventure-vaguely RPG games without being able to excel in a particular area.
