Dragnet S01E13 The Big Casing

I'm a retired police chaplain who has worked quite a few suicide crime scenes. I've always been impressed by attention to detail the Dragnet producers got right on the radio & tv shows. Most other law enforcement shows were so badly and incorrectly constructed that they were an embarrassment to professional police officers. Dragnet, on the other hand, was spot-on from the detectives' interview methodology to their forensic techniques. Jack Webb loved LAPD and he made darned sure they were portrayed fairly. Perhaps that's why he received full police honors when he reached the end of his watch.

I have read he was a stickler for getting all the procedures correct. I think that's why this show holds up decades later, it's realism is refreshing. No melodrama or sensationalism, just real life. Maybe I should say "Just the facts". PS Thank you for your work. The police need guidance perhaps more than most.

It's interesting the way they go about photographing the crime scene so carefully - it makes perfect sense that they would be so careful and methodical, but I've never seen the actual process.

Since 1933 the police have had the means to do GSR testing. In the 50's they did parafin testing. Now they use a faster/more accurate spectroscope detector. This simple Gun Shot Residue test would have shown if the husband and/or wife had recently shot a gun.

And that’s why it’s critical to be very thorough when gathering and reviewing forensics. Forensics don’t lie, people do. And people also like to hop on bandwagons before getting all sides of a story, which is why it’s so easy for the media to “shape and mold public opinion, both foreign and domestic.” Half truths, omitted info, staged nonsense, whatever keeps the folks “tuning in” for their “daily programming” like dutiful little robots getting their daily data download of social engineering. It’s their true purpose.

"Miranda Rights" was imposed on Federal agents by the Supreme Court in 1912 but refused to expand that right to the states till 1968. Various state adopted the rule for themselves between 1912 and 1968. Califoria appears to have adopted the rule in the early 1960s after the Black and White Dragnets but before the Color Dragnets. Britain seem to have adopted the rule in the 1920s or 1930s, you see people being tokd they rights in British movies of the 1930s and 1940s The US Supreme Court finally imposed "Miranda Rights" on all states in 1968.

This was my favorite episode, I love dragnet seen them all a couple times and la was the place to grow up , good weather, lots of jobs, grew at 1000 people a day, and always wondered about city hall bldg on why it was so tall 14 stories not spread out like most but i think it was to mark the city for reference and met a guy today who told me they passed a lay no other bldg. could be higher for some time. They had a crime lab i think first one in the us. and all kinds of machine to help solve crime, data cards, Motorola radios tube type. la had a water problem so they just added la in the valley next door that had water. Then later they built a new police station bldg the Sherwin bldg but recently they tore it down, big mistake they should have kept it as the dragnet building. joe Friday was perfect cop , smart and good looking and he lived in an apt bldg. When he died he had a police escort to the cemetery and they put his badge 714 in the coffin. la was blessed with a hundred miles of beaches and Mexico next door with plenty of low cost labor and the 1950s were the best time in America and you can see it all with no sets and its free on KZread, thank you

If this is true , and they say it is . If it had not been noticed that the edge of the shell casing had been stepped on before the Police got there . It could well have been explained as a officer accidentally doing so . Just a little thing like that saved his life . He would have been found guilty and gone to the electric chair . That is one reason I'm against the death penalty !

what the husband said is that she couldn't actuate the pistol which, I believe, means rack the slide, and that is quite difficult for a woman to do on a 1911. So he had one in the chamber with the hammer back and the safety on. That is the proper way to carry a 1911.

in real life it would have taken a dedicated defense lawyer and flock of expert witnesses to get to the truth. but the good old lapd came to the rescue and saved an innocent man from the gas chamber. whatta crock!

The unbelievable hypocrisy of this, knowing that them are only sucking up to the leadership that stands for all that waste! "The Law" .. that what stands for: harsh, unforgiving, and never mind the facts.
