Dragging logs with a pickup truck

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Using a 1999 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup, 5.9 gas, automatic, to move a fallen tree to a fire wood pile. Than doing an oil change and maintenance on the truck while talking about vehicle maintenance.

I wasn't gonna say this but here we had vehicle inspections and copper wouldn't fly because they said that the double flair isn't as strong so I went stainless steel cause it is strong, won't rust and it is hard to get a nice double flair but can be done with patience. I only live 70 feet above sea level and probably have more salt in my longs than fresh air. The only problem with my western plow was the cable controller would constantly break the ends off so I built a tea handle to move the two cables that did the side shift and the up/down. Worked like a charm for a good twenty years as it outlasted three trucks that were all one ton duallys

I agree with you on the lifts. I don't have the overhead clearance for a walk-under, but Dannmar sells a couple of two-post open-center models that raise the vehicle to four feet or thereabouts. Mine cost me around $2000, including getting the U-shaped frame brackets. It paid for itself in a year with various repairs. I would encourage anyone considering buying an expensive tool-truck toolbox to instead buy a lift. Even the short lift still allows one to sit on a rolling stool to work underneath, no more laying in the crap that falls off the vehicle, no more problems getting axles or transmissions out. Even basic oil changes are much easier and oil catch cans like yours can be used. My wife's Jeep has a pretty massive skidplate, changing the oil requires pulling fifteen fasteners and dropping the thing. I can't imagine how much a pain it would be on the ground.

I agree with you about how much money you can save by buying a good used vehicle. I have never bought a new vehicle for myself. I buy new vehicles for my wife. After she drives them for 10 or 12 years, I drive them for another four or five years after that. I bought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee for $1,500 earlier this year. It came from Texas so it had very little rust on it. I will probably use that to tow trailers and as a winter rat for the next 5 years. I bought my previous Grand Cherokee for about $5,000 and I drove it for 12 years with no problems with the engine or transmission.

Just get an old one and a lift and some tools that's all you need, save a lot of money. I heard that in Colorado and in Canada they don't salt the roads, they use beet juice or something like that that somehow melts the salt without causing the incredible rust damage that must cost people so much money over the years not to mentioning salting the earth and ruining it just like they talk about in wartime. Not only that but you track the salt in on your shoes and it ruins the floor in your entry way and your clothes and shoes.

Just over half the price of new, but the truck was low mileage (I think it had 30K miles), was fully loaded, looked and drove like new. I am gonna be going with Stainless Steel Brake lines for the same reason to prevent the salt from corroding them quickly. Frame and Body that the salt will be hitting is getting coated with POR-15 and a really good Bedliner material as most undercoating from the OEM is junk. This truck has the older Fisher 8 foot blade and I have never seen issues with the older stuff. Newer blades I agree trip too easily.

I wouldnt buy a brand new truck but i got mine used but it was only 4 years old. I used to always get older trucks but I have to say that my truck is super comfy on the inside and the 6.7L Cummins under the hood has never let me down after 200,000 + miles

Agree on keeping older, good quality equipment. My truck is a 94.5 F350 7.3L Powerstroke. Over 200k miles and going strong. It’s always been a west coast truck so there is no rust on it. I always feel for the east coasters who have to deal with all that salt in the winter. Keep the mechanicals in good shape, you can always drop another body on it.

Yeah, that's nice that your truck hasn't been in salt. The frames rust here too. I've had to repair that frame a couple times.

I totally agree on the WESTERN PLOW set up. I'd say Myers pumps were great, but didn't care for their blade.. My best, (never broke down or got tired), was a myers under hood pump with a western blade. Fisher had a good blade, but too damn heavy...

Same issue with salt around here for 4 months a year. I give the underside, inside of frame and doors etc. a spraying with linseed oil every summer. That really helps to protect against the salt and slows down any rust that have already got a good bite. Do the same with any implements that is rusting and it certainly helps a lot. My 1997 model Mazda B2500 truck is still sound structurally but the bodywork will need some welding. Without regluar treatment it would have failed inspection probably 10 years ago. I hope to get it approved for a couple of more years and pass 400.000km with it :-) No chains when plowing? Even with studded winter tires I want chains from time to time :-) To my dismay I have now watched all your videos. But it has been very enjoyable, learnt som things, and had good fun. Thanks for posting them (and dont forget about telling us about your equipment, replacing the exhaust, and fulfillling on the tannerite)

Yeah, I need to start doing some type of oil coating on that frame. I use chains when the snow is deep, especially on driveways with hills. Thanks

when you hook your chain, hook with the end down under the log , as you pull the chain will pick up the log naturally and keep it out of the ground , also keep the chain as close to the truck as possible, this will add weight the the rear axle and give you more traction

Just a quick tip. Put a half hitch of the chain around the end of the tree to get a better point of pull when pulling larger trunks.

After retiring, my grandfather bought some land for a hunting cabin. He did it mostly by himself and only used a chainsaw and hand tools.....but used his Volvo (car) to drag out the logs he had cut.

A clever fix for rust I learned from an old Englishman was to pressure wash the bottom of the vehicle and spray the whole thing down once a year with diesel fuel. His car was thirty years old with no rust!

11:00 I'm going with a single post lift. My garage is too short to use it inside. But I can store in there and when I need it, I can roll it out to my parking area. They cost a little more but it will be fine for what I do. In NH I do lots of rocker panels and having one side clear will make the repair work easier. A half dozen jobs and the lift is paid for.
