In a CAD system, colors are most commonly used to represent line weights. Selecting different colors is just like picking up pens with varying line thickness.Drafting Rule of Thumb: 'Every line must mean something.'

    Thank you! Great explanation of where the Auto CAD lines color coding came from!

    I've been using civil3d for a few years now, pretty much self taught from youtube. Your work is excellent, keep up the good work

    That is very close to the colour system I have been using since the early 90's. Pen Weights Green = 1.00mm Blue = 0.70mm Cyan = 0.70mm Red = 0.50mm Yellow = 0.35mm White - 0.25mm Magenta = 0.18mm Grey 9 = 0.15mm Solid Hatch Screening 250 = 90% 251 = 70% 252 = 50% 253 = 30% 254 = 10% 255 = 5%

    Unforunately drawing presentation is seen as an afterthough, & little wonder we get queries from our manufacturers daily. Half my team don't even know about AS1100, & i'm the youngest there........

    How do you change that thing you mentioned 'use object by lineweight and not colour by lineweight' in case I want to work with a white background?

    Does ,for example, 0.25mm line weight in AutoCad mean the exact .25mm in reaity?

  • @TheArtofTechnicalDrawing

    @TheArtofTechnicalDrawing

    .25mm is the “print” width of a line. So yes it is exact in reality

    @@TheArtofTechnicalDrawing another question, What is the difference between setting up line weight in the plot style and in the layer style property ?

  • @TheArtofTechnicalDrawing

    @TheArtofTechnicalDrawing

    Both can have the same outcome if the setting at plot are correct. CTB is older

    @@SUL-KSA If it is CTB in the plot style the colors on the screen represent line thickness. If it is by the layer everything on that layer has that thickness, regardless of the color.

    Yep theres no standard anymore, Dont even start on 3d modeling programs.....thats a rabits hole, take a flash light. Cooperations no longer have the monopoly on programs, with the advent of serval free options, Which is great! But - being able to model isnt the same as producing a legible document. I didnt remember the line weights / colour rule and tended to draw with line type colour settings, Now I want both......but thats still not a standard. There needs to be perhaps seperate ones for seperate disaplines.

    There is a chance - just following existing drafting standards would simplify life for all involved in real design process whether urban, architectural, landscape or product; but having such a great variety of design software neglecting drafting rules, nowadays, makes following those rules increasingly difficult!
