Nice video. I have same unit. Nuances ... 1. For best belt life, be sure engine is rotated slightly in the slots to align the planes of both pulleys. Just tightening the adjustment bolt will cause planes to misalign 2. Tighten one bolt enough to hold engine in position to keep pulley planes aligned. Then partially tighten engine mount bolts in steps until tight. 3. Gently tighten the adjustment bolt to help keep engine in same position. 4. I'm considering adding an automotive belt tensioner.

@truthseeker3803 - great advice. Did you end up getting the automotive belt tensioner? How does it work?

@Justin Kennedy - did it come off when you put too large of a branch or stick in there, or was it for some other reason?

@@stonehillcabin blade needs honing and was feeding dry 2inch limbs. I think belt stretched as I came off 4 more times. New belt and honing the blade should fix the issue.

Nice - good luck with it. For what it's worth, I learned that there was a recall on some models of DR Chippers. I reached out to DR, but it didn't apply to mine. Not sure if it applies to yours. Here's a link in case: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q5-Ot7ePYdTgcco.html

Thanks been looking how to adjust belt . O bought a use DR 18hp has fatter more serpentine belt my belt seems good on top with straight edge yet still seems loose. When chipping bigger branches i think my centrifical clutch getting worn wont build back up to high RPM to quick. Is a bit slow. Sometimes when flywheel jams is good belt not to tight.

Thanks for making this video. I don't have one of those chippers, mine has direct drive with the crankshaft connected directly to the chipper flywheel. The crankshaft has gotten bent and I'm going to modify it to be belt drive so the engine crankshaft doesn't take all the cutting force.

Very helpful video, now I do not feel so bad about my belt shredding. Mine is an older model and after I installed the new belt in the spring it ran fine for an hour or so, then when I went to use it yesterday the belt started smoking and was finished. So now I have another one ordered and will try again to install with a bit more play. The design on yours makes it easier to access the nuts whereas on mine there is less space. Your video is very helpful.

Did you ever figure out what was shredding the belt? Could it be the pullies are not lined up right on the chipper. and Engine pullies. Putting it in a slight bind. Causing the belt to over heat? I just ordered the 410 Pro.9.2 Hp. I watched another video. The DR. Purchaser. Pull cord mechanism broke. He had a time getting DR to get the replacement. They kept telling him it was the engine makers job to replace it. DR could not find a dealer to get the part from. He ended up buying an after market part. Come to find out. The chipper was not put together correctly. The person who assembled it in Vermont. Left off the shaft keeper on the shredding cutters shaft. It let the shredder shaft move into the chipper. Causing the cutters to hit the side of the inside of the chipper. Which made the starter Mech fail because it was in a bind. . They also cross threaded a bolt. Left the zerk fittings out of the bearing holder. He ended up fixing it himself. He had to clean up the threads on the bolt. Re-tap where the bolt went into the shaft. Add the Zerk fittings. So if anybody reads this. When you get a DR Chipper, make sure everything is what it is suppose to be!

@Charles Coker - I haven't had any other issues with the belt since the very beginning, but I think one thing that I learned is that you can't tighten that belt too much. I want to say they recommended a quarter inch of play, but I found that I need to be a little bit more generous than that. Knock on wood, I haven't had any issues since replacing the second belt. Also, I do recall hearing that there was a recall for some of those units. I called DR and asked about mine, but they said my serial number was not part of the batch.

@@stonehillcabin Thanks for your reply. Been watching different videos. Trying to learn as many tips, and tricks to make the chipper work as advertised. One You Tuber got one. The factory screw up bad. Did not put the retaining clip on the shaft holding the chippers. wheel on. Cross threaded a bolt on the other end of the shaft. Cause the cutters to hit the side of the cabinet. They did not put the grease fitting in the shaft. Only way he found out it had all the trouble. His Starter rope retractor broke. He was not happy with DR response. They said it was the seller of the engine who need to replace the retractor. Even though it was their chipper that caused all the trouble.
