Dr. Thupten Jinpa | Scholar | Principal English Translator to H.H the 14th Dalai Lama #79

As a refugee who embarked on a harrowing journey to escape a troubled past at a tender age, marked by the absence of familial connections for countless years, narratives have become my lifeline. Without the semblance of a permanent address, stories have emerged as my sole asset, composed of dreams, hopes, and ideas-a treasure trove I hold in the highest regard.
My upbringing was steeped in the richness of narratives, acting as the driving force behind my pursuit of continuous growth and self-improvement. This journey has not only solidified my passion for storytelling but has also highlighted the profound impact it has on our scattered global community. This endeavor has served as a vital bridge, fostering mutual understanding among individuals from varying walks of life. It's been instrumental in bridging the generational gap, uniting the wisdom of yesteryears with the vigor of the present through the conduit of stories, experiences, and ideas.

I loved this episode. It’s so true that doesn’t matter how knowledgeable one is but staying humble is the key. Ego destroys everything. We have seen many examples in our society. Every advice from Geshe la’s is very precious. One should not forget their identity.

That’s really an Ahha moment when Gashay la said “ space between the sentence, in our Tibetan language “ I totally agree with that, cuz we speak Tibetan but when we go write it , 70% of us can’t write it with proper grammar and spelling and when we read it , we hardly read !! Space between the sentences will make it much easier to read and understand , then obviously we can write it !! HUGE RESPECT 🫡 if he made it , that’s in Tibetan history!!

It seems we have quite few things in common - that you were in sterling castle in Simla - I remember you during your days at Dzongkha choedhe - I remember you as young inquisitive ( changpo) monk. And finally I also hope to visit Tibet and get a glimpse of places where Je Rinpoche spend his days. Once again thank you. 🙏

Thupten Jinpa la is a Tibetan national treasure. He is one of the peerless scholars in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. Besides his invaluable translation services to His Holiness the Dalai Lama; he has many books to his credit; Bhuchung la could have asked more questions on his numerous scholarly works. And I wonder which institution he presently works for or is he a freelancer.?

Geshe Jinpa la rocks. Great scholar and excellent interpreter to HHTDL Thank you for sharing your story. Please work on standardizing our language so that spoken and written words match. To do that it we need to introduce punctuation spaces and or signs like you suggested. We also need to find a system of incorporating modern scientific, medical, computer, and emerging scientific vocabulary. Since we can’t keep introducing new vocabularies, the second best strategy would be to adopt and Tibetanize new secular terms from English, while keeping our rich religious and scriptural terms.

Tethong the late Rakra Rinpoche mentioned in one of his interviews late 70s. ---------- I have tried many times to persuade the Tibetan government in Dharamsala to produce simple children’s books or a newspaper written in the common spoken language instead of the scholarly language, so that ordinary Tibetans would have something to read. Many Tibetans don’t agree with me, but I believe that we have to change. The literary language doesn’t help the education of the ordinary people. It leaves them uneducated. The language that is taught to the Tibetan children in Dharamshala is mostly the literary language, which children cannot use in daily life since the literary language uses a different vocabulary, conjugations and structure from the ordinary spoken language. I have written a few children’s books for the Tibetan community here using the spoken language and I would like to transcribe Tibetan literature into the common language. Tibetan education is still too elitist.
