Dr Syl Reviews: SCRUBS - MY CABBAGE

This episode of scrubs is all about mentorship and bias. I reflect on intravenous fluids, feedback culture in the hospital, and hirsutism! In this episode, we are in season 5! When Dr Kelso discovers a bird in the hospital, he asks Janitor to get rid of it, but he likes it so much he keeps it as a pet. JD tries to find a way to remove Keith so that he can retain his favourite but incompetent intern.

RE : Pens When I was a student nurse living on ramen, I had a $200 Montblanc pen that I found. I still have it. And I know exactly who it belonged to. With literally anybody else I would've returned it, even if they weren't my favorite person. But this guy was, to quote Cox and Kelso, "A bastard-covered bastard with bastard filling."

I think constipation/fecal impaction made the patient septic, not the Mike & Ike. Cabbage meant to give the patient a suppository, and instead inserted the Mike and Ike, which would not have relieved the patient's constipation, causing sepsis. Also, Mike and Ike's are "fruit" flavored candies.

I can't get enough of these Scrubs reactions. No other movie/series reaction channel I watch do whole episodes like this without a lot of cutting/editing/muting though I understand why. But I will appreciate it as long as it lasts with just pauses and no cuts. Plus you're a fun guy who likes Scrubs and understand it's deliberate weaknesses for it's more thought provoking stengths and humor, add in your personal experience and stories (serious and funny) and medical knowledge sharing. It's a great thing that hopefully keeps up a while longer before KZread picks up the scent :P

I love your reactions. Having grown up the first 21 years of my life in Hospital and having had over 30 surgeries, I love seeing people react to Scrubs, a show that brought me many years of laughter. I also like how you explain certain things while watching. I have such huge respect for all doctors, I would not have lived this long without them. What I love about Scrubs is the motional side of it, the way they feel when they make mistakes, when they lose a patient. Doctors do such amazing work but also can feel such depression and self questioning when things go wrong and they shouldn't. They're human, mistakes happen and as sad as it is, you don't help other patients by shutting down. You push forward and try to do better for the next patients, if not for yourself, for the memory of the ones you've lost. In their honor. At least that's how I see it.

The comments about pens going missing made me laugh so hard. When I worked for a specialist in Sydney as his Admin Assistant. Every time he would come out of his consulting room he would take a pen from our desk to use for the billing slip and then pocket the pen and go back in, despite still having about ten pens in his pockets. He would then leave his lab coat in the room at the end of the day and we would take out huge handfuls of pens then redistribute them through the practice and the cycle would begin again the next day. When I went back to a GP practice (that I eventually managed for a few years before leaving) I became really aware of the way the doctors and nurses would come out with a pen in their pockets (clearly visible) and then use pens from the front desk and take them back to their rooms. Highlighters too. Most of the time we would find them again later and redistribute them but I still had to order so many pens to replace the ones that just got taken home because they wouldn't pay attention to what was in their pockets before they left for the day. Even keys to the basement would go home with one of the doctors. LOL I imagine it is the same at the hospitals.

I get navel abscesses all the time, sometimes dental, and they always resolved themselves. My right eye was almost entirely closed and I look like I chipmunked a small lemon into my cheek. He initially wanted some scans done, I told him my medical history, he wrote the prescription, and I missed exactly one day of work. I called the hospital after about 2-3 days, to let him know I appreciated that he listened to me _and_ I could tell he was super drained by the time he got to me. Food: Depends on the hospital. When I was at MD anderson and Methodist, there were menus, suited to every type of surgery, with great food. When I did my residency in South Carolina, they were growing some of their own vegetables and herbs, and had an actual chef overseeing the food line in the cafeteria. It was crazy excellent. When I did med student rotations at Coney Island, they were accidentally handing out cruddy ham sandwiches to the Jews. Oh the whole green infection spread is weird. I didn't experience this in med school but as part of my mom's nursing training in the extreme wayback, they were shown an educational video (in an OR) of how a contamination then spreads over everything. I think they used the color red, but still, weird.

When I had a few months stay in a hospital once I could walk I would go to the cafeteria almost every evening to eat. The food there wasn't very good but it was way better than what they brought around but I'm a fussy eater so that would explain it. I'd usually just get sandwiches, though breakfast was my favuorite, getting weetabix and toast in the morning was always worth looking forward to.

This episode reminds me of my dad passing away. He had a second stroke and while in the hospital, contracted MRSA which killed him. :-(

Fun fact, non-medical: that raven is African. It's illegal to own a native, migratory species of bird in the US. You can tell from the white patch on its back. They probably leased it from a zoo who used the show's footage for promo material. It costs several thousand dollars to actually buy one. EDIT: Yes, and the white armpits. I paused the video instantly when I saw the back patch and forgot it was such a fixture of the episode.

IDK how things are in Austrailia, but I've been stuck in a hospital in the USA north of Boston for the past week and yeah, the food is actually decent. They gave a menu, and you call down to the kitchen and order based on what your doctor said your restrictions are. They have a big variety to fit every dietary need... except mine apparently, lol. I've eaten pretty much the same thing for the past 2 days because I have to be low fiber (intestinal surgery) and yeah, that restricts me to mostly bread products. I stare enviously at the entree options and the salads, lol. But even when I was on liquids, they had a good variety of broths, juices and flavored ices. It's been almost a week and not bored of the food yet, which is great for those in and out!

In Australia we have a private system and a government run system. As a rule the food in the private hospitals is better but the patient/insurance pays for the privilege. In my recent experience the food in the public system is similar standard to economy airline food

Dr. Acula is till this day never published. But Zach and Donald (JD and Turk) really want to make a short movie/movie. And they know their fans want it too. Just listen to their podcast “Fake doctors, real friends. With Zach and Donald”. That podcast is funny and you learn a lot about a lot to be honest.
