Dr. Sayyed Hossein Nasr, "The Study Quran"

www.politics-prose.com/book/97...
A world-renowned authority on Islam, Dr. Nasr, who currently teaches Islamic studies at George Washington University, has authored or contributed to some fifty books and hundreds of articles and papers. For the last decade, serving as general editor, he has worked with a group of eminent scholars on the ambitious-and urgent-project of producing a new translation of the Koran, with commentary. Now realized, this English edition of the great sacred text makes the Islamic tradition accessible to general readers both with its lucid, modern English and its wealth of maps, timelines, annotations, and analyses of relevant theological, geographical, and historical contexts.
He is in conversation with Maria Massi Dakake, General Editor of the book and Associate Professor of Religious Studies at George Mason University.
Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade in 1984, Politics & Prose Bookstore is Washington, D.C.'s premier independent bookstore and cultural hub, a gathering place for people interested in reading and discussing books. Politics & Prose offers superior service, unusual book choices, and a haven for book lovers in the store and online. Visit them on the web at www.politics-prose.com/

I have ordered my copy and I want to begin my journey, In Sha Allah , relentlessly praying for true guidance from the one true God. I was already contemplating on these lines , and was totally moved when Dr.Nasr qouted at 33:41 "The beginning of wisdom is the fear of God" Subhan Allah!!

He quotes it from St. Paul, but Paul is actually quoting from The book of Proverbs 9:1 from the Tanach (the Hebrew Bible) and the whole verse is 'תְּחִלַּת חָכְמָה יִרְאַת יְהוָה וְדַעַת קְדֹשִׁים בִּינָה' 'The beginning of wisdom is the fear of G-d, knowledge of the Holy one is understanding'.

Very nice man. He has a wealth of knowledge about Islam. We should read not only his translation of the Koran but his other books also. We should all read his books. Very intelligent man. Comprehensive knowledge. Not like some narrow minded scholars whose scope of knowledge is limited to the Koran and the Hadith. Islam should not be limited to the Koran and the Hadith. We need educated and open minded muslims like him. Judging from his credentials and intelligence his translation of the Koran is the best.

In the General Introduction- XXVII- why does it insert (“wont”) after sunnah? I’m so confused by this. What are the authors saying by inserting (“wont”) here. The sentence- “It also contains instructions for various individual religious practices, and especially rites, whose details were provided by the sunnah *(“wont”)*, and ahadith (saying actions and tactic approvals) of the Prophet.”

People should learn Arabic but it's a long process and many English speaking Muslims reach adulthood without having completed it. They deserve to be able to study their religion themselves to keep them attached, and hopefully in study they will eventually learn Arabic. I honestly had no desire to learn Arabic before I read this study Koran, when I realized there was much I was probably missing.

Dr. Nasr may have written hundreds of papers, but he has had nothing new to say. The study of Quran for him is to cut and paste materials from books which were written about Quran/Islam in the past centuries. Neither these sources, nor Dr. Nasir’s own work use methodology acceptable by today’s academic standards. He throws names around as though they have created anything of value.
