This is a personal video in which I unbox a whole set of books sent off to me in one 35 pound box. One of my former clients, who became a friend years back, sends me books he has read for me to read myself and keep or send on to others here in the Milwaukee area that I know can use them. This time, it was an unusually large number of books, most of them on Stoicism, but with some other interesting non-Stoic-related volumes as well
I open the box, show you the books, and talk a little about each of them. As it turns out, I kept about half of the haul.

That looks like so much fun 🤣 I actually just finished reading through the Inner Citadel; my first foray into Hadot’s work. It was unexpectedly dense and satisfyingly comprehensive.

Yes, Hadot is pretty good. I tend to think he gets way too much credit for the "philosophy as a way of life" idea, which as he himself notes, was around for a long time before he came on the scene

@@GregoryBSadler Yea definitely; that’s sort of what I was expecting going into the book and why I put it off. Chris Gill mentioned it positively in his commentary on the Meditations, so I finally thought I’d give it a go. What really got me was how Hadot lays out the unity of the broader Stoic system, using all of the surviving sources. He tries to make Epictetus’ Topoi correlate with the Logic-Physics-Ethics division attested for the Old Stoa which necessitates covering the whole thing. He situates it historically in an interesting way too (he spends a lot of pages trying to categorize what kind of work the Meditations is). It’s kind of a shame he’s primarily the “philosophy as a way of life” guy; there’s a lot of seemingly pretty good academic work in there imo. TLDR: Went in expecting a list of self-help techniques, ended up with a heavily end-noted full systematization of Stoicism and a lot of history about how ancient Romans wrote books.

@@jeffsullivan4182 I gotta say: I'm unconvinced by the "let's fit the different things together" stuff. Way too schematic. Epictetus' division of three fields isn't even the only one we have - Seneca discusses a different such arrangement in his letters

@@GregoryBSadler Very true. I definitely don’t buy the idea itself, but that organization makes Hadot have to treat a huge number of topics. Every so often the placement of something will seem a bit forced, but usually the theory itself will be good or at least interesting (“here’s the Stoic definitions of time from Stobaeus; here’s what Marcus and Seneca say; okay if we put these together here, and this means this, we get a cohesive system that works this way!” Cool! “…And it connects to the Discipline of Desire like this!” Alright… yea, that isn’t wrong… I guess) I will say that people using Hadot’s organization as if it were the official order is unfortunate. I’d have to dig through the book again but I think at one point even Hadot himself says something like “since all aspects of the Stoic system are interconnected, this order would only have been relevant for the order of instruction in a Stoic school” seemingly giving himself a way out. In any event, I can’t wait for my copy of Margaret Graver’s Stoicism and Emotion to get here; that’s gonna be great with no need for caveats.
