I respect this man for being here explaining and reveling all the truth he knew. Unlike Jeff's mother who just took off changed the name to disconnect from this. The father kinda sacrifices himself in the eyes of a public to pay respect to the families of the victims and also to endlessly show Jeff that he is not alone. Even after the death. Its such a terrible story. Thanks to the father we all can learn something.

I feel bad for Lionel. He has to live with the shame of what his son did. Speaking about it may be therapeutic for him. There is always premature judgements from strangers wanting to blame him, but he hasn't committed a crime and isn't to blame. His book is a mostly a self-analysis of trying to figure out where it all went wrong for his son. Proceeds from the book covered his legal fees and he donated the rest to the families of the victims. Lionel felt Jeff had some psychological issues and tried to help. Jeff manipulated everyone around him during his crime spree. Jeff seemed to be remorseful for his actions but he was still pretty detached from it all.

Right no one thinks to expect such wild proclivities from their own kid. People tend to blame others because they don't want to believe that one day, maybe, their own kid could end up a Dahmer no matter what they do. Same happened with the Chris Watts case. Weird how people think the way he was handling the dog was some big red flag. Yes he was a little rough but you can tell he loved the dog and I’ve seen far worse handling of animals from children who didn’t turn out to be serial killers or bad people. Even I as a kid look back and remember getting smacked in the head by our family cat for being too “grabby” with it. But as I grew older I recognized animal’s personal boundaries.

Then a few months ago my neighbor told my mom that her 5 year old daughter had killed 4 or 5 cats and left them on the front porch!!! How does a 5 year old know how to kill animals?!!!? My mom told her to seek out a pediatrics mental health advisor and let them know what has been going on. One of the main characteristics of a seriel killer is killing/torturer of animals!! Shari and Lionel said when all this came out when Jeff was first arrested after the Tracy Edwards incident, that the papers and media would refer to him as Jeffrey Dahmer and them as 'The Dahmers'. And Jeffrey Dahmer was this person who committed all these crimes and was so far removed of who they knew him to be, Jeff. So they became very detached from the name Jeffrey Dahmer as he was Jeff to them. There was an article about it, but I can't find it to post.

They were ashamed to have to tell the workers their names. I feel sorry for them, I think they wanted to help but just didn’t know how. I think it’s easy from the outside for us to say they didn’t do enough or they should have done x,y, and z but at the end of the day I’m sure it’s not the same when it’s your child. You see your kids in a different light. And he was an adult when he hurt and killed those people, there’s not much that you can do for your child when they’re an adult. If he only wanted them to stay he would have held them captive. Jeffrey’s killings and the case always has been very interesting to me. I have no clue why it does. I believe Jeffrey was very very lonely and had serious issues throughout life. Being that lonely and having no one to confide in, can drive you insane. I also think he wanted someone to stay with him forever and maybe he thought that was the only way to keep them by his side at first. Maybe his first kill was an accident? Maybe he thought he just knocked him out? I remember watching one of the interviews and he said he would keep parts of them so he felt like they were with him. Loneliness, however, does not make up for the heinous crimes committed and the families who were hurt. I feel for him on the lonely part, but the killing? No way. What he did to those poor boys and men is inexcusable. He could’ve ignored those feelings or he could’ve gone to a psychiatrist or psychologist (he probably would’ve went to a psychiatric hospital, but still better than killing people.). I understand urges to do something and feelings get overwhelming, but again, no reason to kill innocent people including minors. Overall, Jeff was a lonely, miserable, and evil individual..

I don't see any emotions in his dad's face talking about his son. Jeff's behavior is the result from both his parents. The only love came from his grandmother. Further I believe he had a rough youth growing up. Both parents need to be examined if they were able to raise children.

The parents should have been in a cell too! Horrific neglect.

Nope. Nothing in Jeffrey's life qualifies as horrific neglect. Get real

So many children that start out messing with animals end up criminals. People need to take that and really learn from that. The moment a child does that it is time to step up and make changes.

I know a lot of people are being critical of the father , and maybe he does have a hand in how this played out . I just respect the fact he hasn’t changed his name and hiding, at least he is trying to atone for what has transpired. May god bless the families of the guilty too .. in tragedies both sides lose

He was allowed to hurt an animal period. Jeff at a young age developed the mentality that animals don't hurt. He should have been stopped at that instant. PARENTS should have looked after him always. That was the root of it all.
