My mom always used to say "when something feels too good to be true, it usually is". Narcissists always come on strong in the beginning (love bombing) so that's a huge red flag which should never be ignored.

it easy to say, but if it is part of your life and it takes 2 years - then if feels real. Remember that it took 2 years. How careful a woman can be? Should all women hire prive detecvives before marrying or dating - seems so.

Narcissistic men are so dangerous and clever. Anyone can get conned by them no matter how intelligent. It happened to someone I know...a very smart career woman who fortunately got out of the relationship.

Just watched the documentary. This is classic Narcissistic Personality Disorder and sociopathy. I love that she did this...I love that she allows herself to be vulnerable about the trauma and the confusing feelings that are left in the aftermath. I would love to see her connect the dots with NPD and take the show one step further documenting stories of other women who have endured similar experiences. Her crazy, over-the-top story isn’t the norm, but there are many of us out here who can share stories of lies, future-faking, pretending, posing, masking...and the emotional fall-out that comes with that. Paolo is a complete narcissist. Plain and simple.

Many years ago while visiting Puerto Rico I befriended a young lady I met on a beach. She met a pilot that swept her off her feet. He asked her to marry him. Gave her money for a dress., etc. after a while he just dropped out of sight. She asked me to go to the little airport he worked out of and find out what happened to him. After inquiring, I was informed that he was home (in another town) with his wife, and five children. Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do at that time. She was crushed! Till this day, I cannot wrap my brain around his reasons for his deception. Benita’s story is 10x’s worse. So many were dragged into this man’s delusions! Thanks for the courage in sharing it!

I can tell she’s really talented with PR. Very natural, well spoken, and relatable. She also repeats the catchy sticking points she said in the documentary- in the same exact wording. She probably broke this whole thing down and wrote important points to really resonate with the audience. I’m not saying I don’t believe her story, she is just really good at telling it.

Considering what her background is, I think he wanted/thought she would catch him much sooner than she did. I can understand why she trusted him, he had all the trappings. It is so important to not let someone make you keep secrets or not share full details about their life, and a upcoming wedding. She should have been part of the planning of Everything. He probably wouldn't have shown up at the wedding had she not caught on and cancelled it. She threw away so much without verification of everything this man told her. THERE IS NO PRINCE CHARMING. HE NEVER EXISTED LADIES.

First, I think it’s unfortunate for her to have experienced the lie her fiancé projected to her. Second, I hope she looked at the up side of their romance - remember the romantic gesture he did for her. He is gorgeous. And he did lavish her with cheap gifts and good memories. He did it just for fun. He didn’t do it to cheat for her money. I think it’s alright. He is not the only liar. Men lie. Period.

The same thing happened to me. He told me he was going to marry me and we were going to live in a house in miorca. I loved him so much. He talked me into walking away from my 28 year marriage. Breaking up my children's childhood home. They were 18 and 20 at the time but the divorce still hurt them both deeply and my daughter doesn't talk to me to this day. He told me I didn't need to fight for any money in the divorce.. that I didn't need it. He would take care of me. So I walked away from everything that was rightfully mine and Today have nothing. A life I had worked night and day to create for 28 years...i left behind because of a promise ....a lie. I was so stupid. And my ex husband feels like he got away with stealing everything from me. I am 56 years old and cleaning houses to support myself on less than 30K a year. All because I loved this guy when he said he loved me. I am heartbroken to this day and that was 4 years ago.

After watching (in horror) the 20/20 episode I'm a bit confused on the timeline. The New York Times shows Betina Alexander-Noel had a subsequent marriage, in 2012, to a gentleman named Edson Jeune, who I presume was NOT the father of her daughter, since the NYT wedding announcement indicates Betina was already divorced. Therefore she'd had TWO marriages prior to meeting the sociopath doctor. I note the 20/20 episode curiously does not mention this second 2012 marriage, nor does Ms. Alexander allude to it here. It must have been a brief/hasty marriage since Macchiarini was already proposing to her at Christmas 2013. If Ms. Alexander were my sister or a friend, I would encourage her to seek out major rounds of therapy, in addition to retribution, to address deeper issues.
