DR. OF VOICE Explains Difference Between METAL and OPERA Singing Techniques

/ kristinstarkey
Hellooo!! I've received quite a few requests to make a video explaining my thoughts on vocal technique. It's a bit of a loaded question, and quite hard to cram in a short video!
Please use this as a guideline / basic introduction to my teaching style and how I think about voice in the classical and metal genres!
*This video is intended to be a video for newcomers to voice*
Sorry for the first-time-talking-to-camera awkwardness! THOUGH HOW DO YOU LIKE MY NEW FANCY SONY ZVE-10?! Can't wait to see how some covers will look with it!!!

I can’t sing worth a damn (and my body has made sure I will never be able to), but I quite enjoy peaking into the world of something through the eyes of an expert. Some of my favorite KZread channels talk about things I don’t know that well, but do so in a way where they treat us non-experts as intellectual equals. Nobody is an expert in all, doesn’t mean they need to be talked down to. In fact, anything I’m an expert in (or near enough) tends to be boring to watch. It either over repeats what I already know, or doesn’t bring anything new. Plus the information density is too low. Looking forward to hearing (pun!) more about the voice. Actually hearing it sung out loud (all puns, all day) taught me something at once. That’s one of the reasons why opera and metal sounds so different, even though they might do the “same thing”. Let’s hold this vowel at a high pitch to sound badass. Makes me wonder how some opera would sound sung as metal, and visa versa.
the demonstration at 2:36 is mindblowing. Loved this video!! thanks for sharing your knowledge :D

Came here from Bradley Hall's 50 yrs of Heavy Metal collab. a) You're undoubtedly the best female metal singer of all that appeared recently b) We demand the full covers of Doctor Doctor and Kingdom
as a person who loves to sing this was delightful and I hope you make more videos like it
Super helpful, thanks Doctor Starkey
This was really awesome, thank you!
Great for the explanation!
awesome video, great content keep it up!!!
Dr. Starkey, I am also a contralto! These tips are extremely helpful, as I struggle to hit my high notes sometimes. I tend to get a lot of rasp

HAH thanks bud!!!
I've always loved singing casually. Carrying a tune and learning by ear have always been my strengths. Singing along to my favorite operatic metal is always changelling, and good motivation to learn actual techniques, I just never know where to start and am afraid to be too loud in my apartment haha. But, this is easy explanation/intro is absolutely fantastic and I need MORE!! Thank you!!!
Holy shit.. amazing control. Subscribed.
Very cool. We are working through all of this right now with my son who at 13 has transitioned from a soprano to a developing baritone and who has started to explore contemporary singing styles in conjunction with his classical background. This is an excellent summary video. Kudos as well for combining your singing passions with great success.
hahaha You're now my favorite. And I love when you open your mouth. I dig these techniques. Brings me back to the basics. I needed this, and I think I'll have to listen to this a few times.
4:06 when your mom is on the phone and you need to tell her you dropped your juice on the couch
Jeez! That was interesting. I'm an ex musician (not a pro though), and a fan of prog rock and prog metal and classical music. It was cool to see that change in your head and body when moving from classical to mainstream style. To handle those both so well (masterfully) is awesome. You are a real talented vocalist. And you have exceptionally good voice to both styles. It was really fascinating to hear you explaining the different singing techniques. You're a gorgeous and real funny woman with huge musical talent. I wish you a super great career with both worlds. BTW, you really shined with Tommy in the "Fairytale of New York". Happy New Year Kristin from Finland.
I really enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing it. Aretha once stepped in for Pavarotti. I think it would be interesting if to see if turnabout would be fair play.
You sound like a great teacher! If I ever consider improving my shower singing (which is perfect) I'll definitely contact you!
Thank You...awesome
Love these kind of videos! 👍 For covers I would like to see you take on some Powerwolf songs, I think you'd sound amazing.
Absolutely loved your video and explanation!!! If you ever think of doing any cover from Angra, that would be fantastic
To reaffirm, as someone who has been practicing vocals for 6 years now this is all amazing advice. I knew right away after seeing your covers your technique was thought out and practiced extensively. True gem of a vocalist! Edit: And as for suggestions, I know you like twilight force, would love to see a take on a song from their latest album from their new singer. There is so much more opera feel in that album so it would be a treat to see how your voice mixes in the lead role! My pick would be Blade of immortal steel but any song off that album is awesome!
Super,funny and really good advice
If anyone's wondering, the reverse is true too, no matter your voice type, you can always learn to sing low. There are even some women who sing bass in the 1st octave (Alecia B. Anderson for example)
@KristinStarkey

I would say you are partially correct! A genetic bottoming out does exist, but accessing the absolute bottom does take a lot of training. Based on voice type (for example, a contralto) the lowest *true* accessed note will be around B3-D3 (with some rare deeper extensions). Going lower than this will be produced with a fry or subharmonic witchery. I looked up Alecia and phew that woman has developed a crazy fry! I would say her access/development of that register is pretty much an anomaly. However you can also tell that she can't really project that register because of different mechanisms at work. Thanks for bringing her to my attention!
@TheMusicalPotatoes

@@KristinStarkey you can't extend your full voice, no, but there are so many techniques nowadays to sing lower, basically anyone can do it. Although some cases do exist, like Nina Hagen for example, she can go down to ~C2/D2 in full voice, she started out as a mezzo. Song "Noch ein Tässchen Kaffee" is a good example. But it's likely a result of years of heavy smoking so...not the best way to do it x) And projection is a fair point. All the bass techniques that arent full voice are only useful with an amp making it louder. But i do think it's awesome that microphones allowed us to explore parts and functions of the voice that were previously useless :D
Thank you so much for this! Also you've already been spot on with covering a bunch of favorite songs of mine (found your channel by randomly checking if someone had done a cover of Twilight Horizon and yours did NOT disappoint), but I do have a suggestion: Therion - Son of the Staves of Time
уух,очень познавтельно! Кристина,вы супер!!!!
lovely explanation on vowel modifications, in 5 minutes you've helped me solve an issue i've struggled with when singing. i can find my resonance spots for a good chunk of my singing range so far but i haven't been able to figure out how to modify my vowels properly, your explanation helped me understand it in a different perspective, would love to see more videos of this kind! also, it would be AMAZING to see you cover a song by Seven Spires!

"It is so unlike teaching a physical instrument." I think that's why it's so fascinating to me. As a pianist (and a wannabe guitarist), truly good singing is cloaked in mystery for me. 🙂 Thank you for a lesson in layman's terms. You found the right level of difficulty for a video like this. 🙏 P.S. I know it's not metal, really, but if you ever wanted to do "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin...the lyrics and imagery are practically Wagnerian as it is, and you could make it literally operatic. Just sayin'. 🙂

"Good on you! Your explanations are very clear, concise, and accurate!!! You can’t listen to yourself, it’s all feel." That's actually not true. It's possible to do analysis of the sound waves you produce to look at various characteristics of them, and change your singing/know what to work on. I used that to improve the fullness of my bass singing when learning a bass technique.

@@galgrunfeld9954 after the fact, going back and listening to a recording, or sending it through a program for analysis on frequencies and fundamentals can be beneficial and I recommend it if you have access to said technologies. Most people do not, and wouldn’t even know where to begin. Of course Richard Miller’s pedagogical books are a good start for the technical and evaluative aspects, but mostly more for teachers or students at or above the graduate level. That being said, another, professional, set of ears doing the listening and pointing out is better than your own ears. You simply don’t hear yourself the way it comes across to others. Once you know how to produce the corrects sounds by how they feel in your own instrument (and this varies from person to person) then you can start to listen a bit more during vocal production.

I'd love to know how you learned: 1. Singing out of your initial operatic role - how you expanded from there 2. How you started to, and still learn, metal techniques, being an opera singer beforehand
@KristinStarkey
2 жыл бұрын
Hey! My first opera role was in my first years as a Masters student, so still after a few years of training beforehand. From there its a lot of auditions, connections, continued training, etc. 😊 I strongly believe the best and healthiest technique for metal singing uses a classical approach at its roots. That being said, I was a huge metalhead since I was 11, so opera interest came later. It wasn't until I was becoming proficient at opera that my "singing in the car" metal voice started to make sense and improve. I've just never recorded any metal until the pandemic hit and I had a lot more time on my hands! Lol

@@KristinStarkey Thanks for sharing your background :) How did you get exposed to metal and how did you get exposed to opera? And could you please elaborate on: "I strongly believe the best and healthiest technique for metal singing uses a classical approach at its roots."? I started taking operatic/classical singing and vocal development lessons in the last fwe months with the assumption that I could learn and develop strong foundations from learning classical singing, so I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
So! A couple quick comments: First - you have a serious talent for explaining complicated, technical stuff in a way that's entertaining and easy to understand. Combine that with your vocal talent and you're gonna make one hell of a voice teacher. Second - Nice impression of Blackwald you did there at the 1:20 mark :P Third - Since you put in a call for requests, how about Dare to Live by Seven Spires? Adrienne is a ridiculously versatile singer, and a song like Dare to Live would give you the chance to show off that versatility. Either way, I can't wait for the next one.

@@KristinStarkey IIRC, with KZread as a creator, you get offered by them monetization for your channel once it passes a certain amount of subscribers - so just keep uploading videos and you *will* start getting paid from making covers. I think it's only a matter of time - your content's unique and high quality: I think that your videography is great, the songs are awesome, your videos have a unique combination of techniques with AMAZING execution that probably not many people can at that level, especially not on KZread, backing tracks are high quality, you collaborate with awesome musicians, and you being a contralto makes you able to add so much more depth and power to notes, which is something that I personally think lacks in metal, especially in female singers and in with high notes singing (e.g your singing compared to Twillight Force's singer), so that definitely makes you stand out for the better. And I've never heard anyone have such high quality sound (timber, resonance, clarity, etc.) in symphonic metal (operatic singing in metal). I'd take listening to you over SImone Simons every day of the week, haha. So, only a matter of time for your channel to grow enough so you can monetize it - just keep uploading these AMAZING covers 😍👂

@@galgrunfeld9954 My channel is monetized!! Not sure if you knew but unfortunately covers go through an auto-copyright block when you upload them. The writers/ copyright holders of the original song get all the profit of the streams most of the time. Some artists have a revenue share but that is uncommon. I actually put in copyright claims as covers should be entitled to shares but they were denied, unfortunately. That's why Patreon and donations are kind of important for cover artists!

@@galgrunfeld9954 I was thinking about covers as commissions, actually.
