Dr Mcdougall's stroke June 2024

Dr Mcdougall had a stroke at 18 years old with left hemiplegia. He made a fantastic recovery, and worked for years as a surgical assistant to pay his way through medical school. He had a fall at around 70 years of age, apparently with a fracture, that led to loss of weight and increased frailty. This video explains his previous stroke, and the correlation to his recent appearance and death.

All things being equal, McDougall died the way I want to die. He stayed 99% cognitively intact, and could wipe his own butt, and then just died without the drama associated with the typical SAD patient. No surgeries, no endless buckets of pills, no disabling and toxic procedures and treatments, no pain, no anguish. Whatever age I drop dead at, that's how I want to go out.

Couldn't agree more Peter!! My parents both died very different deaths. My dad died from massive blood clots and passed away in the hospital waiting room, the day before his passing he was working on his farm in the field. Mom on the other hand developed Lewy Body dementia which is basically Alzheimer's with Parkinson's disease and was suffering with delusions, hallucinations and paranoia for the last 10 years of her life. It was just sad.

This is what I am talking about. It's not about living to 200 years old. I will live as long as I live, but I do NOT wish to have gone through 20 years of decline and adding a new chronic illness to my inventory every other year of my life until the end of it. Whether it's at 60,70,80 or even 100, if I, or my relatives, pass away having suffered no change to their lifestyle induced by chronic illnesses ( or as they call it - "aging") whatsoever and having been as cognitively sharp as ever before - that's a big win in my book.

I feel the same way, I don't want to decline and suffer so much. But even tho we can do our best with lifestyle and food choices, we still have no control. I eat well and try to keep my body and mind feeling well because it feels much better than walking around with low energy and a belly full of procrastination and negative self limiting thoughts, life feels better when we are healthy and closer to nature. who knows how long we are here for tho and how it ends for us, happy journey

One of my spiritual teachers in my twenties called this concept “happy, healthy, dead.” It truly is one of my main physical goals. It’s why I eat WFPB and lift weights to build lean body mass. I don’t want to be dysfunctional for a decade or two. The point isn’t to increase your lifespan. It’s to decrease your death span. Like Alan watts said. Dying is easy. When it’s time to die you just drop dead.

Nothing was ever too much for him, he shared his wealth of knowledge and was one of the best teachers on the planet. Only the other week we had set up our next Zoom session with him on healthy vegan pregnancies, babies and beyond. John was taken way too soon, he had the passion, and the zest for life to live for decades. His environmental work and so much more, his research, his love of his family and all of life his driver. Thank you, Dr. Rogers! You contribute so much terrific info to the health community and to the vegan community. I appreciate you! What a shock to learn of Dr. McDougall's passing, but he went as most of us would like to go - at home, in his own bed, and in his sleep. As the WFPB, SOS-free say, "we want to live slow and die fast." What a blessing he didn't linger. He set an example even in dying.

I agree with you. And I'm not a doctor. So thanks for teaching me about this stuff. You're a great teacher. I don't think the stroke he had at 18 had anything to do with his sudden death. How to such a vigorous man at 77 die suddenly in his sleep? And the family has denied an autopsy? This is not fair for all of us who have followed him and supported him by buying his books and attending his programs. He always criticized Dr. Atkins and the family covering up Dr. Atkins' death. He said Dr. Atkins did not die from slipping and falling on the ice. He died from his unhealthy diet. Now here we are with Dr. McDougall dying suddenly and mysteriously and his family not revealing the truth.

  • @annemccarron2281

His family is probably concerned that people will misinterpret the results of the autopsy as we know is quite likely to happen. I would prohibit an autopsy as well. I wouldn't want some idiot saying, "See, his WFPB diet didn't help him at all. He died of a second stroke." (There is already a video online that has virtually said this.) Medicine is not an all or none phenomina. His diet helped him live a much longer life and contribute massively to society. In all probability he did die of a stroke, but had he not changed his diet he likely would have died in his 30s.

@teachertrx1204, I agree with you. I have followed Dr McDougall in various degrees since the 1990s and feel the truth, whatever it reveals, will speak for itself. Various sides will put their own spin on his death regardless. We can handle the truth whatever a autopsy would reveal. Like you said, he talked about Dr. Atkins death being covered up as to the real cause. Now, without a autopsy the anti-plant based crowd will emphasize that choice as proof of the failure of the diet. I owe Dr. McDougall more than anyone as to my current diet for the past 30 years, yet I have a significant narrowing in one of my coronary arteries. I don't deny that reality when I discuss diet and heart disease with friends. I face the truth and wonder about it, but don't cover up the reality, even if I can't explain it.

I work with the elderly and I know they do not have the same capacity to think and communicate as rapidly as John did. For him, I'm glad he went in his sleep but for the family, that must have been devastating as there seemed to be no indication he was near the end. I was a strict ovolacto-vegetarian from 1978 onwards. I was always looking for good information and validation that my diet was safe and healthy. It was John's book "The McDougall Plan" that I bought when it came out in 1983, that reassured me most. People today cannot understand how little information was around 40+ years ago regarding plant based eating. I ended up lending that book to around 15 people, who also took its advice and went on to eating a more plant based diet. John had the courage and knowledge to be a highly effective maverick.

Thanks for spending the time and energy to use this as a good teaching moment on strokes. By all appearances, John McDougall led a good life, helping a lot of people along the way. I think the average lifespan for an American male born in 1947 is 66. He went 11 more years, despite the early stroke, smoking for some time, and eating the Standard American Diet for awhile (I think to 30 or 35, but I may be wrong). Though he was a tough cookie, he lost his home in a fire pretty late in life, which is a major stressor. And of course he had the fall you alluded to. I'd say he went out on good terms, and he would be VERY PROUD of you for having this as a teaching moment. My feeling is that he would also want US to learn from his mistakes and the stuff he did right. As already pointed out, he seemed very cogent in his thinking and speech up until the end. Not sure how his "fall" occurred, but I think one thing overlooked by many seniors is the importance of keeping up leg strength, balance and being careful about obstacles in the house or even on a hike. A lot of people never check out once a bone (especially the hip) is broken. The other thing is that there is a theory out there that protein should be moderately increased at about 65 (see Valter Longo on Rich Roll, etc) to help stave off frailty. I'm not saying this was a problem for McDougall, but it may be worth it to increase protein consumption moderately at that age coupled with good weight bearing exercise of the legs (as well as balance exercises). Going "low protein" may have diminished returns at that point in life to have a higher probability of avoiding cancer.

He talked about this as recent as this year. He also mentioned several times recently that he had never thought he would make it to 77( due to his 20+ years of great amounts of greasy animal foods, the stroke, and its repercussions) and he was happy he made it, like he knew he wasn’t getting another year.

I’m in my mid-70s, and most of my friends look much healthier than he did. I’m sure he was eating enough carbs, but probably lacking in protein and fat for his needs at his age. It is very likely he had some cardiovascular incident but we’ll never know since the family is refusing an autopsy (which in most cases is suggested by the medical examiner in a sudden, unexpected home death.) in any case, he died the way I’d like to go: happy, healthy, dead.
