Dr. John McDougall - Truth Bombs and Starches for the Win

Ойын-сауық

For full episode show notes and resources, visit: www.plantstrongpodcast.com/blo...
We’re honored to welcome Dr. John McDougall back to the podcast for another hearty discussion.
Dr. McDougall was on the podcast on Episode 151, and we took a look at his storied life and career as a pioneering physician and talked about his discoveries that informed his unwavering practice of a starch-based diet.
In this episode, Rip dives in on very specific topics to get his opinions on procedures like mammograms and colonoscopies, bone density scans, blood pressure medications and other pills, as well as treatments for hormone-related diseases like male pattern baldness, endometriosis, body odor, bad breath, and more!
Dr. McDougall has been in practice for almost 50 years and, if there’s everyone who has earned the right to state their researched opinions, it’s him. Yes, he has strong opinions about modern medicine, but his point is clear and simple. So many of these screenings, procedures and medications can be diminished or even eradicated with PLANTS, and more specifically, a starch-based diet.
He doesn’t want his patients to undergo treatments that are harmful, painful, and expensive - when so many of the solutions are simple - It’s the FOOD.

The reason I turned vegan from vegetarian in early Oct, 2021 is due to Doctor McDougall. I heard his lecture on the benefits of a starch based diet. And then soon enough I understood the reason not ro take dairy and extra oil. Now at 66 I run long distances and coach tennis without any fear of heart and leg damage!

I also have little to worry about at age 54 being on the Mcdougall program for 6 years now. I could get my LDL lower and get more exercise, though, but I have an exercise bike where can go for weeks or months of regular exercise and it's very convenient.

This was epic. I have followed both of you for years and totally agree with the diet recommendations . But it’s both the unnecessary medical procedures and the medication discussion that I want to applaud you for bringing to the forefront. I’m 85, take only thyroid ( only because I had a thyroid ablation some years ago) and I am amazingly healthy. I’m a nurse practitioner and worked in a busy ER for many years and can’t tell you how many people came in with literally bags full of meds. They took a drug for one thing and 2 others to counteract the effects of the first drug and so on. I’m convinced that those meds were causing the great majority of their symptoms and certainly were not curing or in most cases, even controlling the underlying disease. But people consider giving up meat and dairy too extreme. Yet open heart surgery, dialysis, and a lifetime of pills and misery are somehow acceptable trade offs.

And I love all the information you give because I now understand why I got fat and sick. I wish I knew all of this years ago. Why was it so obscure? I’m 71 years old I don’t understand why I never found this early on. Well thank you for persistence I finally found you.

If I hadn’t had a routine colonoscopy at 56 I’d likely be dead. For many years of my life I ate the standard American diet, but had embraced a vegetarian and then vegan diet for around 20 years before my colonoscopy. I was in shock when a golf ball sized tumor was found in my transverse colon. It was large and very precancerous. The discovery of this tumor before it metastasized was life saving. Surgery removed it and I’m healthy and fine and living my best life on whole, plant foods. I believe that colonoscopy saved my life.

I had my first colonoscopy in the past year and I have not felt right since. But I haven't complained to the doctors because I really felt like they were using me as a educational opportunity without informing me of that. They taught me they don't tell me the full truth when I would have been glad to have done that volitionally. I would have trusted the hospital more and been more likely to use their services if they were honest with me.

What place on Portland? Pho Van per chance? Lol I’m so glad to hear about his opinion on all of the testing. When I turned 40 my Dr wanted me to get a mammogram and I didn’t do it. I’m going to be 50 and still haven’t. I just don’t feel right about it.

Absolutely keto impacts the brain negatively. I had a boss who went on and off it and could tell immediately every time she started back up. I called it keto brain.

I agree with your food views but you really need to differentiate between 100% grass fed and conventionally raised. Also wild caught and farmed. That makes a huge difference to your listeners because there is quite a difference in the quality and sulfur content. It could help win these ones over.

Regarding supplements, as a decades long vegan, I was diagnosed low in zinc years ago by a vegan doctor (despite taking multivitamins with zinc) and had to WAY up my zinc intake via pills. Plus, I had weird and bad foot/ankles/lower legs edema a few years ago and got suspicious that it might be a vitamin D problem. I now take 5,000+ IUs of D a day and the edema is gone. How do you explain that?

What about colon polyps though? One of the reasons for getting a colonoscopy is to identify precancerous colon polyps and have them removed before they become cancerous.

Ummmm..I had a colonoscopy when I was 50, they found a rapid growth polyp that was caught in time. Since then I have had one every 5 years, and the results have improved every time. I started plant based eating 5 years ago and don't think I will get another one.

They are fine. The problem comes when you process flaxseed so much to squeeze oil out of it and then eat that highly concentrated processed oil. I eat a tbsp of flaxseeds on my oatmeal every morning.

McDougall has a supplement phobia...a lot of misinformation in here. "Vitamin D increases your risk of falls and fractures", lol. It's the lack of Vitamin D that would cause fractures. Most people are extremely deficient. Testing and supplementation are essential if your levels are low.

My question is that if loss of bone density isn't an issue, then why do so many elderly people lose MANY inches in height and end up very stooped over? My elderly parents have shrunk A LOT and are stooped....not good. I'm so sick and tired of paid off politicians thinking health care is DRUGS and BIG PHARMA!!

I can vouch for the unfiltered coffee cholesterol increase. My cholesterol jumped quite a bit years ago and I couldn't figure out why. It then dawned on me that for a few months I'd switched to French press coffee (no filters). Out of curiosity, I went back to filtered coffee and rechecked my cholesterol a few months later. Sure enough, my cholesterol dropped back down to its normal vegan low range.

You’re a rebel now if eating carbs esp potatoes or rice. 😉😂 Check farmers online or markets for any selling direct to public incl potatoes and even oats. Tip: sml local farmers here say costs to be ‘certified organic’ are high in Canada but they’re open to visits by clients to see they’re free of chemicals. I trust them more then many big certified growers allowed to use ‘organic’ fertilizer/pesticide (in Cda) that many react to. Husb and I also support sml biz. Many do also raise chickens, pigs etc but know our views and respectful as we are to them. I’m more worried about pollution to air, water, land and therefore weather from big corp and mass consumerism of cheap products incl packaging. Very little recycled. It’s great Plant Strong seems to use more earth friendly packages for some products. I get it’s not easy or viable. Hopefully better options will be avail soon for good food cos like yours.✌️🌱🌎

With an unbeaten 100-Mile American Record for more than 5 years, ultra endurance athlete Zach Bitter just outdid himself on August 25th, 2019. He crushed the 100-Mile World Record, setting a 6:48-mile pace and besting the previous world record by nearly 10 minutes. As a professional endurance athlete, Zach is notable for his low-carb, high-fat, animal-based lifestyle. He first transitioned to the ketogenic diet during an off-season, and immediately felt his sleep, energy, and recovery improve.
