Dr. Gabor Maté - Toxic Culture | Bioneers

The Canadian physician and best-selling author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts is a brilliantly original thinker on addiction, trauma, parenting and the social context of human diseases and imbalances. Contrary to the assumptions of mainstream medicine, he asserts that most human ailments are not individual problems, but reflections of a person's relationship with the physical, emotional and social environment, from conception to death. Mind and body are not separate in real life, and thus health and illness in a person reflect social and economic realities more than personal predispositions. In other words, personal responsibility cannot be separated from societal responsibility and changing the world.
This speech was presented at the 2012 Bioneers National Conference.
Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.

@@ObjectiveMedia Well, when I was younger, I got very enthusiastic after watching the Zeitgeist trilogy. But then when I got a bit older, I realized that some of their ideas, for example the idea of not owning anything (just borrowing) and the idea of giving the control of all resources to programs and machines, are just absolutely aligning very well with Marxist and Technocratic/Transhumanic ideas, and this is what turns a BIG red alarm in my head.... Personally I think they are a Trojan Horse, hidden (of course) in a lot of nice and valid ideas that we could see in the trilogy. So I rather say BIG NO to that movement... I think there are better ways, when we can still have peace, own things, respect the nature, respect ourselves and our neighbor, and most of all that we still are in control, and not the bloody programs, or machines, or handful of Marxist communists, who just pretend "not to be any ism" - as a smokescreen..... If you watched the 3rd part properly, you will understand what I mean by that " not to be ism" ;) Aside what I said here above, this is a great lecture by Dr Gabor (y)

I love this man. I've been a Montessori teacher and I've seen the terrible pressure put on small children to 'achieve'. I've always been a true Montessorian: preparing the environment and letting the child explore it and make connections for himself... I despair at how most parents inadvertantly treat their small vulnerable offspring, setting them up for failure by asking too much of them too soon. Watch your child UNFOLD at HIS OWN PACE... please. A child will ask questions, give the parents clues as to what he is ready for. Answer the questions. Be attentive to what fascinates your child. Let him explore that thoroughly. Have some FAITH that all is unfolding as it should. Don't compete with other parents: that is one of the most toxic things you can put your child through. He is a child of God, as you are. Respect his rhythm. He is a miracle made flesh. See the sacred in him and let him feel free to explore.

Some of the little ones. dont even know their names, or parents names, or where they live. I talked with my kiddoes everyday. My parents had me memorize my full name, their full names, our address, and phone number, all of which I still recall. People truly ar eliving unconscious lives, not even knowing why they do things.

I agree with your assessment, thank you so much. I myself am stymied by the ignorance or indifference to such a huge Important subject. I, however do not know where to begin with the action which needs to take place to raise awareness to ( i cannot even come up with a word ) which is rare for me. It seems to me most people want to escape into entertainment or other forms of distraction which leave the most important subjects such as Dr. Mate's "BIO PSYCO SOCIAL MODEL" to flounder endless stream of You Tube video's with out any action being taken. I am open to all and any ideas. This is a subject I feel about passionately. Although I am bereft of answers to this conundrum. there has to be a starting point to mobilize enough people who care enough about what really amounts to our future on this little pale blue dot spinning through the cosmos.

AWE WONDER Thank you for your comment, I love to look for solutions in this matter that passionates me too... As Gabor says, we live in a toxic society, which is like a matrix from where most people don't want to escape because they're so used to it and are addicted to it's pay-backs. I believe awakening from this 'Dream of Hell' as Don Juan Ruiz calls the way our society is organized comes from within each one of us first. It's a personal matter to get conscious and it requires guts to go against what we're used to however, all the help one needs is already out there and the rewards are enthralling. Then, everyone who cares enough, like you, can make new choices about the way we give birth (this is where separateness and trauma begins), live and educate children. I believe we could totally turn our world into a 'Dream of Heaven' within 2 decades...

phoenix rising Thanks for your kind reply. I noticed you alluded to Don Juan Ruiz, the author of the "Four Agreements" that book is a treasure trove of wisdom for me. But once again keeping these concepts and paradigm shifts in the forefront of my consciousness and as you said "the guts to go against what we are used to" is far more difficult than just ingesting the wisdom. It is all in the application. Thanks once more.

Is he her best friend now? Or maybe is there even more between them? Why couldn't he love me like he loves her? Is there something wrong with me? Is she just so much better? He's replaced me with another. In an instant: just like that. HE REPLACED ME. HE SHATTERED MY HEART. HE RAPED MY SOUL. I'm all alone and suffering in anguish, and they are living happily ever after together. The PTSD and the loneliness and the grief that he's given me... Makes it so that I can't breathe. I drowned. I suffocate. I die inside. I'm in hell with no escape. NO ESCAPE. I need him. I loved him. He raped my soul: brutally viciously violently maliciously. Every night: nightmares. Every day: panic attacks. I want to die. Every morning I wake up in despair, desperately praying to die. I can no longer bear the pain. I could die from the pain of missing my best friend. He betrayed and abandoned me, discarded me like garbage. My mind can't fathom, my heart can't comprehend. I live in perpetual panic and terror and loneliness and longing... I'm so alone in the world. I die of fear. I'm so fucking traumatized and terrorized and terrified. I'm dying inside. My soul is raped. He's given me severe PTSD. Severe! Severe! Severe! How and when will I ever heal? God, as I walk through this hell and heartache and grief, I pray you guide me and direct me and hold me and heal me... I won't be stuck in hell anymore. Enough is enough!!! It's time to be free: in Jesus's name! I’m giving my life to Jesus! 100%! ANOTHER REMINDER TO SELF: When you chase a man, you NEVER get the man, and you ALWAYS lose yourself!

Basically every human being is good, but circumstances make you into abnormal behaviour) This message is the most important every individual living in this sick industrial, commercial, digital sytem.

@@ObjectiveMedia what evidence do you have that no-one is born a psychopath? all i'm going off is a comment a psychology teacher of mine said which was that (extremely rarely) some people are born with terrible combinations of an incapacity to empathise with other's experience, violent temperaments, super low emotional regulation, and it predisposes them to have a super high chance of being clinically psychopathic. but i don't know! do you? i'm interested and have no strong opinion, i'll go with the facts as they fall :)

Exactly. Healing leads to growth. In order to heal, you must find the wounds, accept them as wounds, find the cause, understand and forgive, let it go with grace and set yourself free. A level of freedom that not many get to exoerience, know and level up further.

Maté is a Maverick physician. Conventional medical paradigms treat body parts & organs as if each suspended in isolation in a vacuum. A pattern recognition system sustained by BIG PHARMA. Some "public sick care" is available offering "free" passage to the chronic illness ferris wheel; healthcare must be funded by the individual. Conscious Parenting is critical to health maintenanance. Common sense is uncommon. Institutions are immune to new knowledge.

It's so interesting listening to Gabor talk about the impact of environmental stress on human development and well being without mentioning any genetic factors minutes after listening to a leading geneticist talk about the impact of heritability on life outcomes without mentioning environment. My instinctive sympathy is with Gabor as a leftie as childhood stress and trauma is obviously a huge factor but the stark contrasts in their world views after years of studying the same phenomena is baffling
