Dr Ed Fong: Demystifying the No Compromise Dual-band J-pole Antenna

Ғылым және технология

For the "Fifth Wednesday" Tech session this month, the Sierra Foothills ARC's special guest is Dr. Ed Fong, developer of the J-pole antenna, and now a VHF / UHF improvement that does not suffer the compromises of the prior versions.
Dr. Fong is a design consultant and instructor at the University of California, Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Extension, where he teaches courses on analog systems and high speed communication.
For more information about the antenna, and Dr. Fong's other products, please see edsantennas.weebly.com/

Wow such a wonderful presentation. Now I am ready to try to build my own. But did I hear this correctly that there is an outline of how to build and test alone the way?

Is it practical to build the dual band with RG58? If yes, please provide a description or demonstration.

Hi Mr Ed -- does the DBJ-UHF +5dB GMRS Base Antenna need any Ferrite Rings attached to the Coax ?

Your talks are greatly appreciated. Thanks much. I need some clarification on the lightning comment. Why couldn't lightning strike the J-Pole, flow down the coax, through my radio (frying it) and finally to earth ground?

Is there any way for 5/8 wave over 1/4 ? 5/8 has best gain for vertical? Plus great pattern

Can I run Ed's tri-band and also use it for GMRS (462-467) if I have a really good tuner?

Not sure why you'd need/want a tri-band GMRS antenna, but if you want it to work at both 440 and 462, that might be a tall order.

It's ok if it is promo for products that I may be interested- who knows, maybe I discover something that i'd never have exposure to if not for content such as this. But, I regress....having advertising in a way forced on its viewers in disguise of content- well, there's only so much that is tolerable... Television programming is regulated with certain "best practices" for these very reasons... otherwise all we'd be watching are advertisements...but with plots...wait a second... *puts on my dark sunglasses/ shades ***"buy buy buy- spend money $ $ $ $ $ buy obey obey *** ... Yup, nothing has changed... (*referencing the great classic 1988 movie by John Carpenter titled, " They Live " starring Rody Piper)

That’s lovely. But I can build a VHF and UHF antenna pair with 6dB gain for a TOTAL of $10 with an SO-239 and some cheap 3/32” brazing rod. Works fine and is VERY stealthy.
