Dr. Chris van Tulleken: Ultra-processed food | ep.138 Doctors on Life

In today's episode, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to talk with Dr. Chris van Tulleken, an esteemed physician, broadcaster, and author known for his profound contributions to medical science and public health.
We dive into the heart of a critical issue affecting our diets and health - ultra-processed foods. Dr. van Tulleken shares insights from his latest book, 'Ultra-Processed People - Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isn't Food ... and Why Can't We Stop?', shedding light on why these foods are so prevalent in our diets and the challenges in avoiding them.
Our conversation spans from the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods, including obesity, mental health issues, cancer, and more, to Dr. van Tulleken's personal experiment of consuming an 80% ultra-processed food diet for a month. The results? Both shocking and enlightening. We discuss the addictive nature of ultra-processed foods, the role of additives, and how these foods are akin to drugs in their effect on our bodies.
Lastly we discuss what the solution is.
Wishing you a great week!
Annette

I wanted to reserve his book at my Norwegian small town library. I would be number 36 in line to borrow it.. So I gave that up and reserved his book in English instead, and now I am number in line to borrow it. So this subject is definitely growing in popularity over here.

I couldn't believe what even tesco finest wholemeal bread contained - cesiumfranciolithicmyxialobidiumrixydixydoxidrexidroxhide. Definitely ultra processed.

@@Siegbert85 It is in red dwarf. Check the ingredients in even the best bread in supermarkets though - incredible how much junk they contain when you think that bread should really only have about 2-3 ingredients, none of which are oil.

I really didn't think Norway would have such a rising problem with UPF. I think I had this idyllic image (as an Eastern European) of the Scandinavian countries... I thought they were one of the last forts in that respect.

The countries eating the least UPSs are in southern Europe. Italy, Spain, Portugal... But people up here (I live in Norway) are starting to realise whats going on, and a wholefood trend is slowly spreading.

I just recall that vegetable oils were initially used to grease farm equipment and that does it for me.

Why would that matter? They used to grease axles with animal fats. So now we can’t eat meat? They used to make candles from tallow. They use blood and bone as fertiliser. You can clean stains with lemon juice. None of this matters. Vegetable oils are perfectly healthy when used sensibly.
