Dr. Cal Newport on Digital Minimalism - What it is & Why it Matters | Afford Anything (Audio-Only)

Cal Newport created a philosophy called digital minimalism, which is the idea of reducing your digital life down to only the most important core essentials. Remove the apps from your phone, then slowly re-introduce only the ones that are the most useful and beneficial. Take control of your smartphone, rather than letting it control you.
Digital minimalism is a philosophy of technology use. This philosophy pulls from the concepts of minimalism, essentialism, the slow movement, and the 80/20 principle, applying these ideas towards your digital life.
Cal discusses the digital minimalist philosophy on today’s episode.

I ditched social media - excluding YT and Pinterest - and I couldn't be happier. Who cares how others live their lives? Not me.

I took this guys advice 2 years ago to quit social media, deleted my Facebook.....was great, but I am a musician and I actually lost a long running residency because of it....then starting listening to garyvee who advised me to get back on it......I did and I wasted a lot of time last year on Facebook/KZread.....now I am looking to find a happy medium..,..cal is totally right but it’s quite a complicated conversation....for example, I really shouldn’t be watching this video now and making this comment, but I am getting some reminders about cal’s work because of it.....hmmmmmm

Only use the platforms that promote your brand and give you the best ROI, but consuming other people's content does nothing but ruin your life. I'm doing a 30-day technology fast as well so...

I’m a musician as well and I understand your comment. I am here from his interview with Lex Friedman. I have several observations. First the response about using KZread and Facebook as tools works if you strictly follow your community and use them to increase our capital. KZread is a great value in learning to be a better musician. I love Steely Dan and can learn much from, for example, their deconstruction video’s or how to play a part. Facebook is almost useless at this point but I can pick and choose from highlights of events I’m interested in without engaging in click bait. I find he should work on his oral presentation, tone, speed, pausing for effect. His manner is professorial and way too hard to follow even without cold. The content is good but superficial without enough quality substitutes. He talks of curated news, show me examples three years later or slow food? Without quality alternatives we will back slide especially in a sense of needing social engagement. He likes to use just musicians as examples. I would take the analogy further. It’s one thing to practice and get better, an easy example. On the other hand there are many other aspects like playing live a lot especially in front of people with feedback or in studio. None of this is easy or trivial. Like the solitude part also sleep and dreaming essential. ;> intentionally and motive matter.

He’s not right about the future of teens on social media. Parents are exercising absolutely no control. It’s going to be as bad as it is today. And trust me, it’s bad today.
