She is a very smart woman, and an extremely mindful actress. It's so rare to come across such an honest interview. It was almost not an interview at all, but more a conversation. I really enjoyed hearing her thoughts on the story, the characters, her method of acting, and films in general. An excellent example of perfect casting, Phantom Thread is a treasure. I believe we will be seeing a lot more of her, and rightfully so!

I just came from watching the movie at the cinema and went straight to my computer to find ot about Vicky. What an amiable person she is. So down to earth, so much led by her passion to do the work - I am impressed. Such great acting in the movie - the end of the asparagus scene: her sounds of anger for loss of words. The interview covered the questions that interested me the most. Thank you a lot for this!

I've just found this interview after becoming a massive fan of this channel (and being a massive fan of PTA for years). It pushed me to rewatch Phantom Thread for the 5th time, and I think it might unironically be the best rom-com of the century.

Awesome interview! I've been watching your interviews for years and each time PTA releases a new film everyone in the comments asks for an interview with him. It's a real shame when you think about how many dull interview's we see PTA in. I hope David gets a chance at some point to interview him because his interviews always feel so fluid and relaxed. Respect.

I love how she dispels the hyper-political lens through which so many Americans create and view art. I think the media is to blame on both sides. Let us not be so wound-up that we can't enjoy simple beautiful expressions as this film.

An excellent interview; I've seen it four times now but with what she said about Alma not being a man or woman and just being I'll certainly look at it differently next time. Does anyone know what it is to which she's referring at 31:55? It sounds something like Monsieur Bleu but I'm not finding anything searching for that.

She was talking about Monsieur Hulot a character played by Jacques Tati which communicate more through his body than by his words. I recommend watching ''Playtime'', but seriously they all deserve to be seen if you like cinema, Tati is a master of visual comedy.

Drunken Master II Of course! I do know Hulot actually, although I haven't seen Playtime, thanks for the recommendation. I don't know how I managed to mishear that though.

thatguyfromthatthing, well it seems like she said mr. Hublot instead of Hulot. Hublot is a small window in a boat and she could've just inadvertently mistaken the words. If english is your first language you might have been confused by the "u" sound combine with the "bl". Playtime is an incredible movie, the sets are on another level and some scenes are so complex that you wonder how he managed to direct them. Criterion has it in their catalog.

I share your frustration, Nancy. Saw the film yesterday, have been thinking about it since and here's what I've come up with. But first, a trigger warning. I don't know you. I don't know your circumstances, I don't know how you see the world, so this may sound a bit too... weird, or nerdy, or cynical for your sensibilities. Now, there's this thing called "costly signalling." (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signalling_theory) It’s quite rare to find a subject where this framework doesn’t yield insight, because it’s such a unified theory of everything. And if we look at the story and the relationship in "Phantom Thread" through the lens of this theory, one conclusion to draw would be that even though Alma has tremendous love for Reynolds, she doesn't get an opportunity to signal that love in an undeniably honest, sincere fashion. This is either because Reynolds doesn't need her love, or because he's too proud to admit that he does. So Alma takes matters into her own hands and sets out to create that opportunity. Obviously, the film is far more complicated, layered and subtle than this crude attempt at an explanation, and I haven't even touched on the Reynolds character and his relationship to his mother, but Alma is just far more interesting to me. Would love to hear your thoughts on this and the film in general.
