DP/30: Boyd Holbrook, Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny/Justified: Primeval City

Фильм және анимация

You know his face, even if you don't know his name by heart yet. He's become a directors' favorite in a very short time, working for James Mangold on multiple films, Gus Van Sant, Steven Soderbergh, David Fincher and others. He took some time to chat with David Poland shortly after the opening of his latest, Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny.

Boyd Holbrook is cut from an old school cloth to me. He's like the great classic actors from Golden Age Hollywood that would be leading men but also really excelled at playing darker characters like Robert Mitchum, Lee Marvin, Richard Widmark, Robert Ryan, Sterling Hayden, Lee Van Cleef, Jack Palance, John Ireland and Dan Duryea. Specifically, Boyd's performance in Logan reminded me quite a bit of Dan Duryea's performance in the classic western, Winchester '73 (1950), alongside Jimmy Stewart. I could easily see Boyd Holbrook in the classic era of movies alongside the aforementioned legends, which is as big a compliment that I could give an actor, honestly. Even in smaller roles like his in Out Of The Furnace and Gone Girl, he does have a presence the way that they did, as well. Boyd gave a fantastic performance in The Free World (2016) too, an underrated film he did with Elisabeth Moss and Octavia Spencer. I recommend it to those that haven't seen it. It's well worth your time.

I think Boyd would have been a Perfect fit in a John Cassavetes picture.

I agree with every single word you said! So glad to see that Boyd gets the admiration and love he deserves both as an actor and as a person (I’m not lucky enough to know him personally, but he always comes across as a gracious, respectful and humble guy) ❤

I could not imagine anyone else as the Corinthian. Boyd's brief discussion of Michael Shannon at the start makes me want to see him collaborate with Tom Ford at some point.

Quite interesting what he said about fimding his characters through their distinctive voices. Not thinking about the accent, but his actual voice sounds different from what I remember in Logan or Indy 5 - not as grave as in those movies. And not like he's gonna read this, but I for one had a blast watching The Predator on an empty screening in Rome!

    Any chance of Mangold?

I know he couldn't talk about it here, but it's obvious that a lot of his scenes in Dial got cut out. His character doesn't really make any sense in the current version. Hopefully Mangold releases a director's cut at some point. What I wish you did ask him about however - and maybe the statute of limitations on that has now run out - is just what the hell happened on The Predator?

Boyd is an underrated actor. He’s has charming leading man potential if used by the right artist. Also I’m not sure if it’s for a role or what but he looks emaciated. What’s up with that? I hope he’s okay.

Yes, he said in one interview last week on Good Morning America that he’s dropped some weight for a project that he’s working on with Samuel L. Jackson which he mentions in this interview as well. He’s such an exceptional talent and a phenomenal actor. Love him!
