Leo Kottke is the master of the acoustic 12 string
And of course he chose a Guild 12. They are the best.
I get the feeling that if Tom Petty had heard Doyle's interpretations of his songs, he would have loved them and soon after Doyle would have been part of the Heartbreaker family. 💖Just imagine what that would have been like!
Wow, flipping the E and A strings (a la Rickenbacker) makes a lot of sense in fingerstyle. I'm going to have to do that with my next string change. I really love fingerstyle with the 12 string and I noted the difference Doyle mentioned with the octave strings on top. My Yamaha FG820-12 sounds amazing for an inexpensive guitar.
I’ve met Doyle. He is a genuinely good person and a phenomenal guitar player. He seems to be a country player. But he can play anything. And play it very well. I am a big fan of Leo Kottke but I don’t honk he is as versatile as Doyle. I truly believe he is at the very top of the best guitar players on the planet.
What is it Leo Kottke said? Something to the effect that the worst(best) thing that could happen to a guitar player, is to fall in love with the 12 string. I'm really missing my old 12 string acoustic Fender about now, it was cheap, but it sure did sound magical.
That's the greatest video of 12 string playing I've ever seen. I wish Doyle had tab to all this stuff...or...give video lessons for 12.
His daughter is good player too
Get a good 12 and they can be surprisingly comfortable to play. I don't have (and couldn't afford) a Guild 12 like this but I do have Taylor 562ce which is ridiculously comfortable to play all down the neck. (I find it easier than my 6 string parlour). the shorter scale and 12th fret body join helps with that. Must say, I like Doyle's idea of switching the bass/treble arrangement (which is what Rickenbacker does).
This brought me to tears! Literally! I have ALWAYS loved the sound and versatility of a 12 String. I have LOST the ability to play for two reasons: First, many years ago I was caught in the crossfire of two gangs shooting it out in a turf war, and a 9 mm round passed through my Left hand shattering the bone in my little finger. Then years later arthritis took out my Index finger and the bones had to be replaced with a special Polymer prosthetic.
I could listen to Don and Doyle play forever. Two SERIOUSLY talented musicians. Thank you!!!
Best sound I've ever heard on a 12-string. Talent!!
Speechless!....I could listen to Doyle and Don forever and a day. Outstanding!
Super! I really enjoy hearing Doyle playing a 12 String Guitar and Guild is excellent! He has so much fun rockin' out which is a happy thing and not incompatible with his Gospel and country music. A real treat to hear him picking that twelve string Guild! Many thanks for demonstrating the fine instrument at Sweetwater!
As a lifelong 12-string fingerstyle player, I salute you. Beautifully done.
I've had a 12 string for 10 years and I'm so glad I watched this. I can now go out into the garden, smash it up and burn it to keep us warm in the winter.
Never, ever thought about flipping the strings for fingerstyle 12. I'm off to change strings and try it. Thank, Doyle!
I love my 12 string from Sweetwater and he is right it is like a piano. Wish I could play like Doyle!! Fabulous.
I’m inspired beyond words ❤
