She was always my favorite character. Though she won't be in the third movie I imagine that Lady Mary would say things like "You know Granny always said..." and quote one of the Dowager's pithy sayings. I love so many of them. "When we release the dogs of war we must go where they take us!"

The dowager was absolutely not obnoxious. She is a woman I aspire to be in my older years.

I ADORE Downton! Loved the second movie,so yes, I want a third. Heck, I want the SERIES back. Maggie Smith being gone will leave a huge hole, but I have faith they can do it.

There is a strong chance there will be another series.On daytime tv in the UK,Julian Fellows said there would be a further series in two years time.That was if he could get all the actors available for a 6 week run

I agree. I always felt the show spent way too much time in the early to Mid-'20s. To me, the Show should have started as it did in April 1912 and tackled the gilded age, WW1, the Jazz age and end with the market crash of 1929...then the films could tackle the Depression, the Abdication crisis of 1936, the prelude to war, 1939, the Blitz all underscored by the end manor house era in the early 40's

Mary will not assume the title of Dowager Countess because Matthew did not live long enough to inherit the title since he died while Robert was still alive. If Robert were to die before Cora, Cora would become Dowager Countess.

The real question is: would anyone watch III without Maggie Smith?????? She was the sun around which all the other characters revolved

The movies weren't quite as spectacular as the series but still by far the best drama ever. I absolutely loved Downton & would love for it to return even though I would miss Granny terribly.

A excellent production. It’s a good tool to teach new generation about the historic events that marked the humanity.

I can't wait to see it Love Downton Abbey. I watch all 6 season and have saw both movies. I do find that I like both of the movies. Hate that we all lost Maggie Smith. Love her playing the Dowager Countness. Love her character. CASSIE❤❤❤❤

The Dowager Countess was the heart and soul of Downton Abbey, she will be missed on the show 😢

Well, if it were set in 1939, Mary would be almost 50. More like George would be in the RAF and Sybil would follow in her mother’s footsteps as a nurse. Quite possible that Robert is an aging Earl. Surely Carson would be way too old to work, Mrs Patmore no doubt retired and Daisy the cook.

I agree, BUT, maybe they could convince Dame Maggie to film one short scene- maybe Lady Mary facing some sort of serious decision, and Lady Violet appearing to her in a dream to offer sage advice, which of course, would be the perfect solution 😉

The family was engaging as always and I hope for a third movie. What would it be like if Mary, et. al. were the age as her parents were at the start of the series?

I can't let grand-ma-ma go. I will have to give her posthumous lines to say in the next film as I watch it. She trained us very well. Subtle, stinging, perceptive, hilarious...all the marks of the Dowager.

@@annehersey9895 Maggie Smith was quite definite about the fact that she'd had enough and wanted to be written out. I think it's more likely that there won't be another season. Many of the main actors have moved on to other projects and Fellowes, although giving the matter consideration, stated that if he couldn't get the main actors back he wouldn't bother.

I think they should go back to tv. Movies are good to just come in and say Hi, we're here and here's what's happening. For something like WW2, they need to let the story percolate and simmer. There needs to be build up and character development. We are now at the time where the younger set are growing into young adults. We need to see more of them. I don't want just a snippet of a story, I want it to sweep. Coming to America would be a nice plot.

Oh I would love to see them explore WW2!

@@peachygal4153 Dan Stevens wouldn't be returning. He's moved on to many other projects and it would likely feel like a backwards step. A bit desperate. He signed up for three seasons and then went on to other projects. The concept is too American - bringing back dead characters either as themselves or someone else.

The last movie did not have an engaging plot. The plot of the "movie has to have sound" was stolen from Singing in the Rain. And the "can't figure out who my father is" was stolen from Mama Mia.

No one could ever replace Granny and it would be so obvious an attempt to do so. I think they've just lost her and will need to find some punch another way. But not a copy of the Dowager.

@@nomadmarauder-dw9re No way!! I also heard that Mary was actually Carson's daughter. Oh my, the visual that pulls up! How crazy. Mary would be disgraced and would need a new butler. But as to Edith, it's interesting since Rosamund was who took Edith to Europe when she was pregnant out of wedlock. Was Rosamund pregnant out of wedlock with Edith and gave her to the Crawley's to raise? Funny, I don't remember if Rosamund had children at home. It all gets weird, but that's Downton. You never can tell. Next thing you know, Cora will turn out to be her mother's daughter by Cornelius Vanderbilt in a long hidden scandal that pops out, causing Downton to receive a huge sum from Vanderbilt's estate, saving it from the wrecker in 1936. I guess that's what happens if you're Julian Fellowes and trying to make new material for 6 seasons, 57 episodes and now 3 movies.

In the second movie interviews, after having seen "The Wire," my biggest shock was learning that Dominick West is actually a toff-talking upper crust Brit! Coulda knocked me over with a feather.

It was arranged as one of the last British Lord/American millionaire’s daughter marriages, possibly during the first year of King George’s reign (who famously loathed such unions). It was very much a financial transaction at the start.

Hey, good idea. They could reprise the whole family in 1890. The Dowager would still run the house, her husband would still be alive, the present Lord Grantham would be a young man and as always the place would need the money of an American heiress. Mr Carlson would still be butler, but young. It wouldn't be Downton with all new characters but it might be fun.

Oooo another reason to have our 4th Annual Downton Abbey Costume Dinner Party . Cant wait.

This teaser leaves the impression that Matthew Goode who played Henry Talbot, Mary's second husband from the end of the TV series, would be present. In fact he wasnt in either of the two subsequent movies, and I suspect would not return for a third movie, leaving Mary with no romantic interest. Matthew Goode had a much better part in the movie of The Godfathers when they were filming the first movie, in which he was brilliant, and is now a lead man. I dont see him taking a minor part which is one of many small support roles, and without him, the movie would lack much.

So, the series "The Crown" meets "Downton Abby?" the actor who played prince Charles is in Downton!

It’s never easy at the loss of a relative, even in real life 🥴

As soon as you said 2019 my mind wandered back to that time pre covid 🤔

I never thought Mary should remarry, at least not when she did. Her remarriage was a forced plot point because, in Downton Abbey, no one can go very long without being coupled up. Heavy forbid anyone stays unattached for very long. Only the Dowager remained unmarried.

I want the series back! Is it on Netflix! When is Brigerton coming!

I liked the first movie far more than the second. I would prefer to see the family and servants more than extras like those actors. Getting into WWII would be great but that should wait for some time since the characters would be older and they'd have to "age" the actors if they were to do it now. The kids would be grown and George would probably go to war. Sybbie would probably be a nurse like her mother was, and Marigold would do her part too in some way. It would be wonderful to see the kids as teens and young adults. I know I would miss the Dowager though as she was always my favorite character.

The Downton movies are underwhelming. They feel more like an update on lives of the characters, since with so many of those there's not enough screen time to properly develop a storyline for each of them.

Cora's cousin from America comes to stay. She bought her own home and becomes a replacement for the dowager. But not as a sarcastic. Who could replace Maggie Smith

The first movie was better than the New Era movie and i hadn't read these comments. I only just watched them. Miss Dan Stevens. No real chemistry with Mary and Talbert. I think the Great Depression and WWII would be intriguing. George would be old enough to join up.

The people who can not recognize that the last movie was tied up in a neat, pretty package, with full resolution and a bow on top are the problem. This show and its movies were fantastic and it finally ended on the right note. Now people are begging for another movie which will inevitably be lackluster and pointless (and without Maggie Smith), therefore squeezing the life out of a show that is so loved. People can’t seem to understand that good film art has an end. It doesnt continue for over 25 years with repeated worn out storylines until no one watches it anymore. It ends at a point where the story is great and well remembered. It frustrates me to no end when fans selfishly demand it continue to the point where writers are simply throwing things against the wall to see what sticks and nothing is fresh. Learn to accept a work of art as it is and stop leeching life from finished pieces. Move on.

If a 3rd movie takes fruition and starts from the 2nd, before WWII comes along we MUST explore how the depression hit the Crawley family! Remember, Cora was one of those Rich Americans who married by exchanging her money for his title! If her money is tied up in a trust in America, the Crawleys could be flat broke!

*For Season 7, it can't be 'all roses'. They need to have serious drama; bring back the sibling VENOM between Lady Mary (Now, "Dowager Countess?") and "Dutchess Edith"--or whatever her title now is, after marrying The Marquess of Hexham.*

I've t hought this. They could in fact "bring him back' using old footage perhaps unused, as reflections and memories of Mary, and projections of what he might say.

Mary will never be Dowager. She would be Lady Mary. If her father passes before the child becomes of age, she may have a 'regent' role until he is of age.

Didn't like the 2nd movie. It felt like the script was rushed, or "phoned-in". I don't think a 3rd movie is needed. I doubt I would go see it.

Season 3?

They are plenty of subjects for a DA 3rd movie. The period 1929-1939 is very reach on drama subjects.

Perfect roles for the return of that nasty ladies maid and nanny West.

A THIRD movie? The stench of the first slapstick and coronets movie is barely off me. Maybe the second movie did so poorly because fans has figured out that this jumped the shark story line is nothing more than a money grab at this point. It's starting to make the Sex and the City franchise look Academy Award worthy.

I wish this bloke would learn how to properly pronounce 'dowager'. The 'dow' rhymes with 'wow', not 'doe'.

The Downtown movies aren't that good but we still go watch them. I'm sure they makes a lot of money...
