@@vannacee26 nah, it's just a habit for some slavic languages to read latin names as it's written and not how it is pronounced. For example, no one says Manowar as it is pronounced in english "Maen-o-woah", it's just... straight up Manowar, get it? Overkill is also not pronounced as "Ouah-kill" but "Overkill", with all letters voiced to their corresponding sounds. Perhaps it's because Eastern Slavic languages work like that. There are few silent letters. That's why it's not "Raemouns" it's "Ramones"

My reaction to this video: Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh
The thing about James using up picking during that Creeping Death rehearsal is that the riff has more bite. By playing with up picking he’s actually hitting the D string before the A which gives it a slightly different sound with more bite. Dimebag used to play Cowboys from Hell with up strokes, and it’s why so many people covering it don’t sound right. It’s a small change and a split second difference between which string is hit first, but it makes all the difference.

I'd definately love to see more varied content like this from you (though of course I still and will always enjoy when you talk about Metallica--or Megadeth, or any other band for that matter). Maybe something like the history of metal or of metal techniques and what influences/artists/techniques in the late 60s led up to its formation, and/or what influences/elements in each subgenre led the creation of another subgenre, or maybe how metal has evolved throughout the decades, and how it has split off into subgenres and why/what elements led to the formation of each next subgenre in the family tree of metal could be some good ideas. In my experience/knowledge, it's usually always the combination of two or more existing metal subgenres combined together to make another subgenre. Sam Dunn's Metal Evolution series does a good job of this as well. By the way if you don't know BangerTV, I'd suggest you check them out. Especially the Metal Evolution series if you can find it to watch and the LockHorns podcast where they discuss subgenre origins, definitions, and important bands in it. It's a good question to ask: what truly defines a genre or even a subgenre? The lyrics, tempos, complexity or simplicity, conventionality or nonconventionality, style of vocals/drums/guitar, something else or all together? But anyways, would love to see more videos on other bands like Meshuggah, Testament, Sepultura, Dream Theater, Opeth, Nevermore, Machine Head, Pantera, Morbid Angel, Gojira, Fear Factory, etc. So many great bands out there!

ALL of Ramones songs : DOWNPICKING
Awesome video! Master of Puppets is pretty easy to just downpick, but I still haven't figure out Blackened. It seems impossible to only downpick that....
Riffs sound more aggressive when downpicked but if someone alternate picked any rock/metal riff I wouldn't give a crap
Johnny B. Goode was the first riff I ever learned that showed me how cool downpicking could sound
When I started playing guitar there was none to correct or even point out my mistakes. So i played for a long while using only downpicking. Being a fan of metallica that helped too. But as years passed by I eventually came to know about alternate picking and started practicing that. I'm still not as comfortable with AP as much as I'm with DP. But after a lot of dilemma I can play one or two AP riffs now and I must admit that does save my arse from carpel tunnel every now and then. 😂
Honestly I didn’t know what alternate picking was until I passed the beginner stage
What bass do you use? I'm going to buy my first bass and i'd like to have one you can have lot of different sounds with and play a lot of different genres. my budget for the bass is about 200 euros.
First of all, greetings from Brazil! Second, I've never played that Puppets main riff only down picking (probably 'cause when I learned it, I wasn't so good with downpicking) but if you play only the low E string with down picking, the sound is really similar to the original
When I started guitar I actually couldn't up stroke until about a year when I got introduced to eruption by van halen, at at point I had to learn
like when i'm trying to learn Nothing Else Matters these days in quarantine, the finger picking part at the beginning, i couldn't play it with my thumb and my other 3 fingers, i just could do it with my thumb and my index
Andriy sir I wanted to order some bass tabs. Is that still possible?
Iced Earth's 'The Hunter' has some insanely fast downpicking (think if you downpicked the alternate picking parts in Orion) in live performances.
Josh Homme talking about the difference between an upstroke and downstroke was pretty good too. Can't remember the name of the video
I was never told either to pick alternately or only downwards, yet I tend to downpicking, unless a riff is too fast for me like that. But I absolutely can't play solos with alternate picking.
Saxon's Princess Of The Night is a great downpicking riff
It's that fraction of a second of going from high note to low note, or low note to high note in a power chord that creates the feel of the sound. Leading with a low note makes it heavier IMO. Single notes seem to not matter as much.
I’m 48 and started playing guitar at around 10-11. James Hetfield was my idol as a player and I was known as being very good at down picking. I never got very good at alternate picking unfortunately and when I was in my later teen years I started getting extremely bad tendinitis in my forearm and especially my elbow. It would take me out for months at a time. All that said, for thrash metal it just sounded so much better, tighter, and thicker.
i love this montage 😂
Finality by Mors Principium Est is one of my "has to be down picked" riffs.
Petrucci alternate picking MoP is so funny to me because they used to play it after pull me under, in which he plays a downpicking riff that's even faster
Discordance Axis's guitarist Rob Marton is fantastic at down picking (I'd argue a notch above James). The song Castration Rite is all down strokes, it's worth checking out, as well as the outro to Jigsaw
Speaking of Johnny B Goode people forget that Chuck Berry invented the James Hetfield stance
Symptom of the universe
I use a very thin pick so that my downstrokes are kept weak enough to match my upstrokes, which I make stronger by bending the pick so that it's curved.
Hey andriy, completely unrelated to the vid but i was wondering what you think about the intro to gods of violence by kreator. Imo its hella similar to fade to black so maybe you wanna take a look for another did they steal it vid
As I Know the firts down pick you can hear from richi blackmore in deepurple song highway star. You can hear first colour of thresh metal
My favorite dowpicking riff is My World(guess the band). I did practice downpicking with this riff
Кайфово, когда понимаешь все русскоязычные приколы в подобных видосах. Кстати английскую речь различать становится всщ сложнее. Прогрессируешь! Удачи в дальнейшем развитии.
Along the same lines as James Hetfields insane down picking Frank Zappa played using mainly upward picking ,along with the secret chord progressions he used his constant up stroke picking gave him prolly the most recognizable guitar sound in 70s rock.
I love this dude,I can watch he's shit all day. So much information. I never looked at,been playing guitar for years, always something he brings up,I never noticed,so kool.
I like this video! James isn't wrong! It is very much like a competition. In a way , I'd like to see that competition become between Metal, and other genres, instead of just within metal itself. Count me among the masses who learned his down-pick speed from Master of Puppets. An interesting note here: Tornado of Souls by Megadeth. During the iconic Marty Friedman solo, I have always played that rhythm with all downstroke. Watching a 1992 clip, which was while Rust in Peace was still hot, Dave switches back and forth. He's quite capable of making all down, or alternates, sound the same during that section, demonstrating both in the video. So while James wants to make all the "pussies" compete for downstroke speed, Dave's like "I don't get to hung up on all that crap, you're gonna have a hard time either way". However, I will always play it in all down. I've begun to experiment a little with making chunky sounds with ups. I believe there are many situations where you can master that sound with practice, and disguise the use of ups. (Overkill: Live Young, Die Free from the Horrorscope album. As the solo begins there's a rhythm section of alternating E and F power chords where I'm practicing this technique. It's over a chord too, more than one string to account for.)
I invented the FretCorner pulloff! It will get popular over time as I evolve it.
Annihilator - City of ice. Play that song downpicking all the time and hair grows on your chest!
answering the question at the end of the video (and speaking of metallica 'cuz it's what i can remember at 1:30 am): 1. through the never 2. master of puppets 3. creeping death
Darth Hetfield is who taught me how. My upstrokes are not as strong, and I know that. I limit them if I'm playing riffs like the Creeping Death main, Paranoid main, or Blitzkrieg (or the Bop variety).
You had me at Babushka
Creeping Death, Puppets, Blackened... it's hard to pick just one.
Matt from Bullet for my valentine and Mick from Slipknot are also beasts when it comes to downpicking. Just listen to Waking the Demon or Sulfur
Playing with stubbed fingers in kinda of a cheat code in my opinion. With more of an arch in your finger in an upstroke you can make Creeping Death sound very energetic.
That outro was cute as hell 🥰

My fav downpicking riff is the bridge of war is my shepherd by exodus
Blood and Thunder by Mastodon is one for sure. At least, the main riff. It's a right pain to play that way, but it sounds so much better.
I think of the song Paranoid by Black Sabbath as an early metal example of downpicking
Blackened, Master of Puppets, Creeping Death, Sanitarium, Hate Train, etc.
Pentagram’s Relentless is the one of the most doomy songs of downpicking.
