Just in case anyone was curious: we're still very far from simulating a real nematode brain. We had to basically guess at the 'weight' for each neuron since you can't tell if a neuron is inhibitory or exhibitory by looking under a microscope. A real nematode looks for food, mates, avoids toxins, predators, lays eggs, etc., all with only 302 neurons which is extremely impressive.

Could you explain a bit about inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters? Also would a version with accurate "weights" be much bigger or around the same size?

Neurotransmitters sometimes cause inhibition ie maybe to stop or decrease something, and excitatory neurotransmitters that lead to the start or increase of something ( from my basic psych class ). Inhibition is as important as excitation in living @@dungeonman.fromyoutube

  • @lorelord2418

Hard disagree. Sure, animal cruelty is a thing. But there are different ethics with an artificial animal: You don't have to worry about the long-term effects of an animal getting conditioned to interact with humans. For instance, let's take a hypothetical coyote. You're not supposed to feed wild coyotes, because they will lose their fear of humans. This will then, inevitably, lead to coyotes predating on humans and in human environments. Or, take the manatee. You're not supposed to interact with manatees because they'll learn to associate humans with good things, and lead to more, easier poaching as well as accidental injuries from boats. You don't have to worry about an artificial coyote eating your neighbor's baby, and you don't have to worry about a simulated manatee getting shot by an asshole who's selling trophies.

Just want to point out that this is a very specific and scientifically important nematode named Caenorhabditis elegans or C elegans for short. Why is C elegans important and special? Well it’s because we have mapped their biology almost completely and can nearly flawlessly predict their development from single cell to mature animal due to a very low level of variability. We know exactly how many cells an adult C elegans has and the exact developmental lineage of every cell. This was also the fist species to have its full genome sequenced and it is an important model organism in developmental biology research due to how extensively we understand its normal development.

This is so cool, thanks for sharing. I wonder if this could be used for our own brains in the future, if we upscale it enough? You probably can’t fit all our brain cells in a list like that but in theory isn’t this a possible way to do it?

It's just an extremely simplified model of the nematodes cells. It is not properly simulating cell to cell interaction. Neurons are incredibly complex.

It's because brain cells are not linear. One layer to the next layer. Any cell could call any other cell at any time. Each post synaptic is like its only variable defining where the synapse is connected to.
