In 1975, Watermelon Man by Cannonball Adderley had been someone our high school band teacher listened then wrote the music for our high school jazz band while never forgetting the marching band playing Watermelon Man in the center of a county fairground horse show oval mixing jazz with unbridled spirited cavalry especially within the Commonwealth of #Kentucky Greenup County Greenup Tigers, music is best here! thank you kindly for sharing this amazing session. 🐬

According to Rahsaan Roland Kirk's wikipedia page, in 1975 (same year as this show), _"Kirk suffered a major stroke which led to partial paralysis of one side of his body. He continued to perform and record, modifying his instruments to enable him to play with one arm.... He died from a second stroke in 1977, aged 42...."_ Lots of other interesting info on his wiki page, including the fact that Jay Leno used to open for him.

This is an amazing, historic show. Thanks for this. I was not surprised that Chick Corea took top honors on electric piano, but I was surprised to hear Quincy say this was the first year they *had* an electric piano category. Wow. I imagine it was similar for electric bass, but I don't know what year they created that category. And this show started my obsession with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, as well. And my first introduction to Weather Report. Airto's amazing solo during Hubbard's tune. I mean -- truly a life-changing show for me.

Agree. But it's also too bad they didn't get the next incarnation of Weather Report in the 1976 awards show.. Jaco would have blown the roof off the place. That said, Stanley Clarke in 1976 was still one of the most exciting bass players on the planet. As you can see from his playing on Lopsy Lu in the 1976 show. What a great time for jazz and fusion. oh my.
