Trekkers are often confused about what layers they should buy when they should wear them, how much they should invest in them, and so on.
In this video, we will be addressing one such concern - should you invest in down jackets or padded jackets. We went down to Decathlon, Anubhava in Bangalore, looked through their large collection, and made our verdict as to which is a better investment. Take a look.
The 6 factors discussed in this video are:
1:18 - 1 - Warmth
2:19 - 2 - Weight
2:45 - 3 - Compactness
3:39 - 4 - Water resistance
4:13 - 5 - Maintenance
5:29 - 6 - Cost
6:41 - Final verdict

    I go on long treks and expeditions. And I would choose a padded jacket, just because it is easier to maintain. Which is one of the most important things up in the mountains. You will get rain, you will get showfall and you will sweat a lot, once the jacket gets wet, it is useless, will take longer to dry. A down jacket fails misable in this aspect. Unless you use it only at nights when it gets colder. But then again you put on an inner thermal and well even a fleece jacket will keep you warm , put a waterproof/windproof jacket over that and you can easily take temperatures of -20 to -30. Down jackets are just fancy to look at and in my opinion completely pointless, unless you are someone who feels very cold and/or you are going to altitudes above 25,000 feet.

    I live in Canada,and padded jackets are no match for down jackets. And depending on the outer shell they are waterproof as well. If budget is not a concern go for a down jacket.

    One of the biggest drawbacks of down jackets is they tend to be less windproof than padded. Also now z days you have synthetic material like primaloft which is as light as down while being very water resistant!!!

    If the down is sourced ethically, down jackets have a lesser environmental impact than padded jackets. Because every time you wash a padded jacket, it releases microplastics which aren't natural. So it's still a draw :)

    (Please ignore grammatical error because English is not my language) -20 (6999/-) jacket is really awesome... Presently I'm using this... But don't forget to wear a shel jacket/ wind cheater / Waterproof Jacket over this - 20 jacket to prevent from water and sharp things/edges because this jacket is very soft... -15 Jacket (3499/-) is Not good as - 20 Jacket... -20 is very light weight, soft, compatible Very Very warm but other one is not good in these quality... So my vote definitely goes to - 20 (6999/-) Jacket...

  • @Indiahikes

    @Indiahikes

    5 жыл бұрын

    You're right. Sandakphu is indeed a very windy trek. To tackle such winds, we'd recommend a padded jacket over a down jacket. Something with a hood, a zip that comes up to your chin, and perhaps adjustable sleeves. You need something that sits snug on your body. So try and then buy. Make sure you have a woollen cap and a neck warmer / balaclava to tackle the wind.

Very comfortable & warm hat (you have to sleep with it). 5 woolen socks (2 at a time & they get wet everyday). Neck cover & face cover as well. For chadar you need a lot of layers. If you want to spend lavishly & in future will travel to places around -10/-15 C for minimum 10-15 days in a year, then you can go for down, otherwise padded. You'll get options for both at Decath, but you should spend 4-6k on normal jacket(fleece layer + wind&waterproof jacket) or min 6-12k for down.

    Decathlon has a good collection, with a wide range of Down jackets. You could head over to one of their stores. If not Decathlon, Wildcraft makes good down jackets. So does Columbia. Although both of these are on the more expensive side.

    Between cotton and polyester jacket, which is better for kedarnath trip?

    As your outer most layer, better to have a wind-cheater kind of jacket (which is usually not cotton). When it gets rainy, or if there are light drizzles, these will remain dry and keep you warm.

    Thermals are usually very easy to find. Even stores like Max and Reliance trends have good, afforadable thermals. Even local innerwear stores will have them. Just ensure you buy something light. These are meant purely to wear at night, when you're not trekking.

    How good are leather jackets for trekking?

  • @Indiahikes

    @Indiahikes

    4 жыл бұрын

    They're not at all meant for trekking. They are very heavy, get wet easily and don't dry for a long time. For a trek you need something light and compact, and also needs to be fairly water repellent.

    believe there is a separate down detergent for the 'down' ones. check out... But decathlon themselves tell to just do a light wash with warm water and shd be good to go.. no need to machine wash with tennis balls, or rigorous wash, or dry cleaning, just plain, light wash..

    Hey One Important question - while trekking to Bugyal, I was wearing an base layer, dry fit T-shirt...then a Fleese and a down Jacket.... While trekking it was lot of sweat and base layer was wet by the time we reached Top. Any way to avoid that? Will that be cause of getting a cold/Fever?

    While treking you should never wear a thermal or a baselayer just your polyester quick drying tshirt, fleece and then the Jacket. The reason for this is while Treking we are moving and our body already produces heat so we don't need a baselayer or a thermal

    The question should be, which costs more, naturally Down Jackets are far better, lighter and more expensive? The really best Down Jackets are also water proof, example Canada Goose Down Jacket the Rolls Royce of Down Jackets will set you back roughly 75,000 Rupee's or US$1000.00 minimum. Enjoy.

    Hi. Water resistance is a plus point of a Padded Jacket as most of the jackets are coated with at least a bit of waterproofing material. Which means they can withstand slight rain, slight snow for at least half an hour, one hour. It depends on the waterproofing on the jacket.
