Dougal Shunting at Cyfronydd Remastered | Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

'Dougal', the 1946 Andrew Barclay-built 0-4-0T, climbs towards Brynelin viaduct with a short freight train during the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway's Steam Gala in September 2006.
Having moved into the siding to allow passenger trains to pass, 'Dougal' then shunts the freight stock into the loop and moves the brake van to the rear of the train. The light rain makes life difficult for the diminutive loco as it struggles to lift the short train up the steep grade beyond the points at the Welshpool end of the loop. Finally the train departs for Llanfair Caereinion.

Wonderful classic scene on the old pointwork. Shunting round a goods train…without taking Dougal over the siding point in a facing direction. With the new points these details don’t need to be remembered any more.

Thanks for watching and commenting, really glad you enjoyed it. I hadn't realised that about the points, and had wondered why the manoevring wasn't necessarily the most obvious, it all makes sense now thank you!
