Check out your local Native Plant or Audubon Society on KZread. Buy from Native plant nurseries, not big box stores.

I've focused on gardening fairly recently with 2 acre wooded lot. Naturalizing the area was a goal to attract birds, bees, moths, and butterflies. This was the video I needed. I spend half my weeding efforts in the woods. There appears to be a new invasive or two every year. My woods use to have hundreds of trilliums, now most are only found in my dedicated flower gardens. Thanks for these resources to do more research to reach my goal.

We have been working in this direction, planting native plants and making sure we don’t buy invasive species. I’m on 3 acres that has a lot of invasive‘s that we need to get rid of but also many of the beneficial plants that you recommend. Thanks for sharing this with the community in a way that more may have access, even if by accident because of YT recommendations.

I have 11 1/2 acres that I'm trying to improve. I planted 140 native pines back into the woods. Paw Paw, and other orchard trees. Now, I'm worried...I'm trying to wrestle the woods back from Smilax. I had over four acres of wooded land that was inaccessible except with a golf cart. The vines were 30 feet up and over the trees. I've beat it back, but it's an never ending battle. Now I'm wondering if I'm doing more harm than good. It chokes everything out...but it does provide food for animals. What do I do?

If I leave pruned stems on the ground over the winter, will bees use them?

probably not - they like them standing up.

If bees don't use them, other bugs probably will. If there is a spot where you can maintain a stick pile it is good for the ecosystem one way or another.

If a plant is native to North America but not your state, does it count?

  • @Gardenfundamentals1

Count for what? It is native to North America, but not native to where you live. Those are the facts. The term native is used far too often in a general way.

@@Gardenfundamentals1 Yeah it is. That is why I asked. If a species is pollinated by insects native to both your area and the area where the plant comes from, is that good enough? Will the same insect species be evolutionarily different due to distance so that they won't pollinate the plant?

We would be half way there if we got rid of those damn golf courses and put up wildlife habitats or parishes or even food forests.
