My dad cried when this came on the radio when he picked me up for weekend custody rights. Solid guy to this day. Wish my parents could have got it together when they were kids. I decided to wait for stable finances and a solid marriage before having kids. Married 7 years with a great career and a paid off house at 33 years old. We're expecting our first born any day now... Counting my blessings right now!

Just dropped my son off a couple hours ago and happened to find this song by accident. Just a crushing life right now for me. Hoping things get better but it's hard to see any chance of promise right now.

It's been years since my dad passed away, I've learned to live with the that wound, but it's never really healed, and I don't think it ever will. My dad was my hero growing up, I idolized the man. Even now whenever I need a little guidance in life, I remember my dad and what he taught me. I know he's up in heaven looking down, and watching us. I'd give anything to see him again, to see his smile, and hear his laugh again. Rest in peace, Dad.

I remember my oldest son singing this song when he was about 5 yrs old and it was after his dad and I divorced. I got lucky and my parents lived in the same town a few blocks from one another. Only thing I wish didn't happen was my mom bad mouth my dad so I wouldn't want anything to do with him. It ended up working until I had children of my own and my dad and I finally talking about the past. We have a great relationship now. Just wish she would have never done that. I held a grudge and sadly she passed away almost 5 years ago and I wish her and I were in a better place before that happened.

William villa yeah it sucks ive never been through that part but when I was 16 my mom started cheating on my dad and left him for the other guy and I hated her. She tried to force the new guy on me and it got to the point when if I ever saw him I was gonna kill him but thankfully an hour before I had to go stay with her somehow I got excluded from the thing and wasn’t forced to stay with her. I know she’s my mom but I haven’t seen or talked to her since. This was a very short version of the story and I left out a lot of the harsh things my mom did to me and dad so don’t think I was overreacting because it went on for years before she finally admitted to everything that I already knew because my friends would send me texts saying that my mom had gotten out of her truck and into a van and was having sex with the guy in a random parking lot and it was horrible

This song breaks my heart, I felt the same about my bio dad, I thought he walked on water when he was a pos who never paid my mom a dime in child support. My stepdad took care of my mom and I, while my dad got to swoop in once every few months with a gift like a skateboard I would break my neck on, and be a hero. My mom never talked bad about him in front of me though, she let me believe he was the greatest.

Crazy who and what this makes me think about. The call to serve just won’t leave me. My hearts in it and my heart is so big and I’m so hard headed when I want something I better go after it especially when that urge stays with me every moment of every day. I never knew my real dad. My grand parents raised me but my stepdad treated me as though I was his biological daughter. He was an awesome guy. He taught me how to drive and bought me lots of things. He's gone now but I was fortunate enough to have him in my life.

I've had her from 50% of the time to about a weekend every 3 weekends, due to working where the money is. When I'm having a tough time and missing my lil, I may listen to this song 6 or 8 times in a row to remind me that there's a lot of us in similar situations and were all doing all we can to give em a better future. So Doug thank you for this song and the comfort its provided me the last 6 years(liked it when it came out, but it didn't hit the same til I was in the same situation). I remember my Dad picking me and my 2 brothers up on Friday and having to take us home on Sunday nights all the way up until we could drive on our own. I have a memory of being like 5 or 6 years old getting dropped off at my mom's crying in my room and my mom and step dad came in and asked what was wrong. I told them "I missed my Daddy". I am sure it was a tough thing to hear. They were all great parents however. I only called my real dad, "Dad" and my step-dad by his name. But I love them both the same.

I'm 58 now. My daughter turned 30 last month. Her momma and me were together 8 yrs. We lasted 4 months after she was born. Tore my world apart. Her momma is gone now. RIP. I often thought about my real dad he never came around when I was a young boy long story short he came around when I was in my late teens. over the years found my real wasn't worth damn thankful for my step dad he taught how to be man. Amen on that song, brings my mental status pray to God and realize how much we have it the best for the US.

This song reminds me of my cousin when my uncle would pick him up on the weekends from his mother’s house. It was a blessing that he got to move in permanently with his dad/ my uncle, at 12yrs old. My cousin is 37yrs old now and my uncle never got remarried. It was songs like this that we grew up on. Not holding a phone or playing video games, but instead we where fishing, hunting and camping. Riding that old Honda ATV keeping up with the beagles. Well it sucks that as of tonight while reading through the comments I see that Doug Supernaw has passed away. Can’t believe it’s been 2 yrs now. And it’s the dangdest thing, because as of tonight I have also come to find out that Bobby Flores has also been dead for a year now. It’s been tough these past 4 years. I drove a 1979 Ford F250 4x4 with a 12 inch lift and 40 inch tires,,,my Lil Feller rode next to me standing on the seat with his little arm around my neck,,,I love that boy more than life its self,,,all I dressed him in was his leather cowboy boots,levis and flanneled shirts,,,he was my side kick,,,it was a rough time having to take him home,,,I finally got him and he lived with me,,,he lives in a house 1 mile from my house now days and is 29 years old and I'm just as proud of him today as then,,,he's 6 ft 4 inchs tall and 265 pounds and I still call him my "Lil buddy" Praise God

My ex’ and I couldn’t get along but never have I allowed my Kids to call anyone else dad. They have one dad only.

I disagree. I have two biological kids and two I have raised almost from birth. The oldest was almost three when me and my girlfriend got together. We have had to get an op on their sperm donor and he even tried to kidnap the kids to spite my girlfriend. He wants to play dad, but never wants to step up to the plate when it comes to doing dad duties. Never helps pay for birthday parties never helps out with anything. And yes, he pays child support, but he pays less on two kids by her than I pay on the one I have with my ex, and he makes more money per hour and works more hours than I do. I am those boys fsther, not him. When and if he ever steps up his game, then he can be daddy, and they will have two daddy's, but they will always know me as dad because I have been there since before they can remember. And no, we didn't coerce them into calling me dad. Just one day, my middle child said I love you dad, and it stuck. Then the oldest started calling me dad. Just like my girlfriend is momma carry to my oldest biological son. And his mom is the one that started that. So yes, it is possible to have two sets of parents.

There's alot of parents in the comments lol... I remember being like 9 years old and hearing this song and then playing it everyday... My dad walked out of my life when I was 8 years old... Broke my heart. I was a totally daddy's girl. My mama remarried when I was 10... My stepdad was a great man, was a dad to me when my dad wasn't there. But he wasn't my daddy. Never once called my stepdad my dad. My real dad came back into my life when I was about 14 and honestly my dads my best friend. I'm 18 now and my dad and I talk all the time, always there when I need him and Lord knows I've needed him alot these past couple of years... I'm beyond thankful for the relationship I have with my dad and I'm beyond thankful to have had a step dad that stepped up to the plate and was a dad when I needed one. ❤️

I get it man. My boy is 24, and my grandson is 9, and it still tears me up today, cause I never had the quality time I was wanting back when. A failing rodeo career, and a done failed marriage, it was just a matter of time before the shit hit the fan. Hang in there bubba. I just came out of a pretty rough relationship. The only thing that kept me going was her son. His own father wasn't around, so I treated him as if he was my own. His mom and I can't seem to get along, and I'm not sure if I'll ever get to see him again. He always called me his best friend and he made my life so much brighter. Hey man, don't you know that he'll find you. If you're his best friend, and his dad, he'll find you no matter what. Kids don't forget who was good to them. Just make sure your name and number is out there so he can find you. I know, I had a failed rodeo career, and a horseshit marriage, then I reconnected with my son, and now I've got a 9 year old grandson, so don't ever give up hope, man. If they truly love you, they will find you, always remember that, though ya might have to search for them a little bit, but I recon it will be worth it in the end.

I've been though same thing rasied my daughter for 10 years not my actual daughter entered her life she's was 2. Divorced when she was 12 haven't been able to talk to her much since but she called the other day and still calls me dad.

My dad worked in a Texas oil field when I was born but when it shut down when I was two years old my family moved to out to California because there were better job opportunities there in the late 80's. Sometime in the first year after we moved my mom and dad got a divorce. After the divorce one of my dad's old oil field buddies came looking for him. The friend was planning on going to Alaska or the Klondike to become a gold miner and wanted my dad to join him as a full partner. But my dad said no because he wanted to stay in California to see me grow up and be in my life.

My dad had the opportunity to go on the road as a manager for a local band that was going to be opening on tour for George Strait. Dad turned them down because being a family man was more important to him.

I didn't realize that's his real son in this video. ❤ I was reading that they haven't had the best relationship, and they reconciled in 2017. His son plays for the Tennessee Titans. And now, a couple months ago, Doug was diagnosed with stage IV lung and bladder cancer. So sad.

Love this song as a kid. Made me think of my father when I was a kid. Didn't see him very much.

Watching my son go through this with his son is heartbreaking

This song is my late dad and my older brother, my dad's first born with his first wife. It always felt like we barely had him at all during those every other weekends and it always seemed like they were just always able to do things together without us. I'm glad dad at least had us cause it was rough when my brother was old enough to decide that he didn't want to visit anymore. The silver lining to the story is that many many years later we finally got to see him again and build a little bit of a new relationship with him. We still don't see him much and there were still some hurt feelings but at least he was part of our lives again before dad passed away.

We need songs like this to keep life in perspective. We've all been there; sometimes you gotta swallow the lump in your throat, blink away the mist in your eyes, and keep going.

R.i.p doug this was one of my favorite songs as a child my parents were split up and I lived with dad..I didnt see my mother much as a child so this song would make me cry like a baby every time I heard it..I used to sing "I dont call her mommy she could never be like you" lol

My son used to love this song, when he was little. I know he related to it. RIP and good health, Doug. ❤️❤️
